If the “pop up” is an issue do what I did, get into Kneeling. The swim out is easier as you have fins and can duck through the waves. There’s no pop-up so you’re quickly into the wave. It’s brilliant, skilful and exhilarating. The small board is easier to carry than the longboard. All positives, have a go.
I’m 68 now. Haven’t surfed since 1992, this sure looks appealing!

I literally pray that I die before I stop surfing 59 and thankful for every minute I can play on this beautiful sphere.

Real nice slide there..like the 50's in California at Rincon or Malibu on a small day.
