I am a middle and high school orchestra teacher. I forwarded your lesson immediately to my cello students. Since I teach four instruments, I don't have the opportunity to teach as in depth as I would like. This video is an answer to a prayer. Thank you!
Awesome! As a beginning cellist, the movement of the fingers, wrist, and elbow is so hard to understand. Although I’ve watched many cellists play, and I’m aware of the change in their fingers/hand from upbow to downbow, I’ve never been able to replicate this movement at home. The details you provide about the positions/roles of each finger, the flexibility of the wrist, and the movement from the elbow are so helpful-and you can be sure I will be doing pinkie pushups and spiders later on today!
Fabulous clear examples of many aspects of bowing. My teacher explained this to me and your lesson has made it even clearer. I love the exercises…thank you
I consider this to be so basic and yet so very important. Thank you, and I look forward to my improvement. It's the little things from better to perfection. : D
As a violinist for decades, I discovered the pinky surfs on top and a little off to the side and It is kind of used as a rudder. My grip is a commanding hold for control. The index is a bit proned to use for controlled pressure for the desired tone. I also play cello and this is the same hold that I use for the fiddle. Great tips for the bow...thanx.
Hi! I love your master classes! Thank you for all your videos! I’m a piano teacher starting cello for the first time. I’m learning from you a lot even though I’m a beginner in cello. I have small hands and would like to have more information about the rubber you use on your bow. Could you please let me know specifically what medical supply you get the rubber from? Thanks!
Very very good, being aware of flexibility, anathomy... I loved and appreciated your approach immensely!!! I just picked up my cello dream that has been sleeping for 55 years... extra important then to stretch and be aware! My thumb is stiff from damage though, so I find my own way of placing it on the bow.
How about a class focused on intonation? So many talk about the "inner ear". But few really explain its function in relation to the left hand finger placement. And, when it is remembered that the left hand makes no sound the right hand has a role to play in intonation as well. This so called "binary input" when coordinated results in scale notes that are in tune. A miracle!
Dear Mr Moser, Thank you for your excellent and extremely informative Masterclass Bow Arm 1. I am hoping that you will address the thumb in more detail next time. This video shows the front of your hand perfectly and I am wondering what is happening with your thumb while doing the movements you are demonstrating. Thank you very much.
Thank you so much for this lesson! My daughter has been playing cello for 5 year. Although she is a pretty advance cello player but she hasn't been able to get the correct bow hold despite having been taught by 3 different cello teachers. She is currently playing with a straight thumb bow hold as you demonstrated for the earlier teen years. She wants to change her bow hold to the bend thumb but she just can't apply the strength to create the same sound as when she plays with the straight thumb. She feels very frustrated. Do you mind sharing your experience of how you change your straight thumb bow hold to the current bend bow hold? Thank you!
Thank you so much for this lesson! As a returning cello student and player, there is muscle memory, but mindfully holding the bow like when you first start to learn is so important no matter how many years you have play. And these finger and wrist exercises are fantastic and will definitely bring back the strength and agility of my bowing arm and hand 😊.
It's great to be reminded how important these kind of exercises are !! They prevent injury and create confidence. Thank you very much. I would love to have a much more in depth video on thirds 4ths etc for us self taught students. Big ask I know.
Terrific lesson, thank you! I'm a professional guitar player but I've got an 8 year old violin prodigy so I've been playing violin for a couple years but I've always wanted to play the cello. And today is the day I finally got one! It's so beautiful and I'm so excited! But anyway, this was a good bit of info regarding bow hold and such as I had no idea how I was supposed to do that. Thank you and I'll follow and keep up with your videos!
Great masterclass, really cool that we all can learn from you (for free!)! Somehow I can't keep the bow straight in fast strokes and the sound is not clear due to that. Do you have any advice for fixing this?
You mentioned steering the bow across the strings w aid of the pinkie, it seems I've always used the contact point for support and steering is necessary for this though it also creates stiffness and tension. Thanks Johannes I'm always grateful these resources are always available. Getting started on these RH exercises right now. .
Hey, i would love the next episode to be about really fast strokes( on and of the string), spiccato, how to controle the uncontrollable 😂, examples: on the string(popper 6, hungarian rapsody) of the string(haydn, elgar 2,...) ,Thank you so much
This was awesome! I'm going to include this as part of my therapy exercises for my recovering wrist. My injury really slowed me a lot. Now I'm trying to relearn how to use my hand because I love cello so much! Thanks for posting this!
Vielen Dank! :)
Im getting back to playing my cello. I've been told its impossible for me to ever sound smooth now. I have severe Rheumatoid Arthritis along with Chronic Still's disease. I can no longer hold my bow right and I sound like a cow in labor, lol. My hubby is gonna put some rubber on their like you just showed. He is also picking up a pool noodle to cut off a small piece, he is hoping to help me hold the bow correctly with it. Right now, my grip gets so stiff due to the joints locking up in my fingers that he has to physically peel my fingers off the bow after I practice. Im still using my old starter bow. But hopefully at the first of May we're gonna get a new one. Do you have any bow recommendations for someone like me? And do you know of anything else I can try to make me smoother? I'm NOT gonna stop relearning my cello just because these diseases are interfering. So I'm starting to reach out for suggestions.
Thanks for the exercises. I'm having problems keeping my fingers down in first position when I switch notes. Trying to train my brain to not move my first finger when putting the 2,3,4 fingers down. It throws me off
Sehr hilfreiches Video, vielen Dank!
I just started learning to play the cello but I cant Gold the bow correctly. My Finger are so stiff and I cant even do the exercise with the only motion of the fingers. How do you do that?
I simply cant beleive this content is free on youtube
thank you soo much

10:13 Man, I was really waiting for the violin to come in, being reminded of Trio Élégiaque! :D
Cool! Thanks Mtro! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
That was the BEST video I have seen on this topic! Thank you!
good point about the thumb - also locking it out like that can lead to pain in those tendons after a little while due to the tension
I would love if you can talk about you're warming routine. That would be awesome! Saludos desde México!
Really helpful video, could you please talk about sautille next time and especially string crossing while keeping the bow going?
That was great! For the next bow masterclass, could you focus on a spiccato stroke? Thanks!
❤❤Thanks a lot
Johannes, I have to reference this video a lot. Thanks for making it!
Thank you, Mr. Moser! Your tip has helped me a lot!

Thank you Johanes
You must have studied with my childhood teacher Margaret Rowell in spirit. Yup, I’ve done many push-ups and inch worms.
Thank you so much for doing this!!! 😍
I would like a video about changes of position of the left hand
Bow yoga!
I’ve also done many windshield wipers.
Thanks for sharing man, I am going to try your method.
Thank you you Good 😊

Fantastic Johannes.

What. Was the aim here in this video? Keeping the bow straight parallel to the bridge or string crossings?
Thanks so much as always 🙏🙏 A focus on upbow staccato and maybe frog changes would be awesome 😁 bleib gesund! Liebe Grüße!
Thank you, it was very important
This was hard. And great! Ouch! 🤚
Yes!plastic is very best ,it helps wen have to play a lot.wery best .
What size tube from the medicinal supply? I need to get some. Not sure from where.
Should the thumb hyperextend while doing the pinky push ups? Or that’s wrong?

Thank you, Johannes. Do you have any practices and advices to improve softness in the higher sounds > E4?

In welche Richtung rutscht der Daumen ab?
Why do I always have dfifficulty keeping my thumb in position on the bow
I just started learning to play the cello but I cant Gold the bow correctly. My Finger are so stiff and I cant even do the exercise with the only motion of the fingers. How do you do that?
Which medicinal supply exactly?
"don't just warm up with coffee" - this will certainly be a change for me
Is your teaching only for cello? Can violin novice also can learn from your lessons?
