- This is a booklet published in 1975 by the Defense Nuclear Agency about Johnston Atoll. It was given out to everyone who was stationed there at the time. It was 48 years ago so my memories are a bit hazy.
Johnston Atoll had four islands and Johnston Island AFB was the largest of the four.
The units that were there in 1975 were:
Det.2, 1957th Communications Group (USAF)
267 Chemical Company (Army)
United States Coast Guard on Sand Island
National Weather Service on Sand Island
Det 2, 18th Surveillance Squadron (USAF)
10th Aerospace Defense Squadron (USAF)
And Holmes and Narver (civilian contractor)
See link below for pdf file of the booklet.
I was there in 1972-1973. I was in the 2194th comm squadron, USAF. When I first got there I was in the barracks next the the runway by the chowhall. My room was next to the runway. The first morning I was there I was rudely awakened by a C141 landing. When I made E5 they moved me to an apartment near the launching pad. We referred to the Thor rocket as the Johnston Island Dildo.
I am retired US Navy. I was stationed at Field Command Defense Nuclear Agency from 1988 to 1992. I was in FCP Plans Division. One of my first tasks was to retype this book. This is awesome to see.
Thanks for taking the time to put this together. It provides a different perspective of the atoll. Nice that the book is still in great condition.
Stationed there in late 1969 and 1970..for the splashdown of Apollo 11. thanks for sharing

That would be Captain Chaplain Roger Sobin in the barbers chair.
I was on JA in 1975 also. I also have that booklet. I was with the USAF Chaplain Service. My office was down the hall from the base Commander, in the JOC. Maybe you stopped by my office for coffee!
I spent most of my time in the Communications Center. I also worked on sandblasting those piles they were using to reenforce the sea wall. I thought I had a permanent sunburn!
Wow, love it. I'd love to have a copy. Can you scan that in and make it available? I was there from Dec. 1995 to Feb. 1997.
Link to the pdf is in the comments.
