I moved to NYC literally a week before the city (and world) shut down. My main passion is writing/flash fiction, but I started getting into street photography last year while traveling the States and in Europe. When I moved here, I had a grand vision (like everyone else) about how photographing the city would be; that my creativity would come alive every time I walked out of the apartment with my camera. However, for obvious reasons, street photography has been extremely difficult strictly for the drastic lack of subject matter walking around these days, even 6 months after the official start of Covid. Everything in this video reminds me of what I’d always imagined NYC to be, especially for street photography. Even tho this version of the city is still very, very far away, it was cathartic to watch this and think about what could have been - and about what will be back one day, no matter how long it takes. Great content, love your channel!
Have you ever thought of doing a series where you meet photographers who don't actually use the GR and spend a day with them shooting it for the 1st time?
Hello Sam, thank you so much for this wonderful piece of work with your friend Mathias. I am from Cebu island in the Philippines and your work is so inspiring to us seniors who are going to spend the rest of our lives taking occasional photos of people and streets here.
I've been on your channel for a while, but this is the first video where I truly realised how great of a videographer(?) you are. From 0:45-2:45, just wonderful work, Great stuff man!
So so crazy seeing NYC just a month or two before the start of the COVID epicenter in 2019/2020 and with everyone without masks on. A different time in history for sure. Good stuff Sam
These video’s keep getting better each time you upload! The quality is always on point and at a certain level (must be the Japanese roots 😉). Your style of videography fits the streetphotography you’re known for, it’s very natural and doesn’t feel forced. You managed to develop an own kind of style that sets you apart from other channels! 👌🏼 But your strongest point is that you take your time, you’re not afraid to upload a 30+ min video and I like that. It really helps to tell the story of your guests and makes it interesting (and somehow calming 💆🏻) to watch. Looking forward to your future endeavors in 2020!
Man! Thank you for your lovely comment Marc! It is very rewarding getting that kind of appreciation after all the hard work that went into each video so thanks! My rule for youtube will always be to create videos that I would enjoy watching myself. I love documenting things I like and I often think my videos are too long but also don't want to produce content for people who have no time. I want people to take the time for my videos and take it all in, even if it's over 30 minutes. Thankfully a lot of people do that and as long as I can keep up with it, I will continue doing that. Thanks again and happy new year! :)
Another good one Sam - you're an essential part of the international street-shooting scene. Nobody can contest that by now and those that do should have a look at your 2020 work.
Samuel, what is that flash that Mathias is using at 15:03? I can see its a Fuji but what is the model number please? Its smaller than the Pentax that I see many photos of the camera with this flash mounted on it
Terrific video Samuel!! It has a lot of great street info and Mathias seemed like a perfect companion for your visit. I hope you get a chance to get back to NYC soon. It was also nice not having to hear how great a Leica is every few minutes. The GR shots are wonderful!!
Beautifully filmed and edited! The opening NYC montage was sublime -- reminded me of the opening montage in "Midnight in Paris." And the music choices and the transitions between them and the timing of the video were all perfect. Oh, and it made me follow Mathias on IG too. Cheers!!!
Thank you for the kind words Matt! Midnight in Paris is one of my favourite movies :) Happy to hear I got you interested in checking out Mathias! He is a great photographer. Cheers!
Hey Sam, I love this video of yours and your work. Also I fell in love with Mathias’s work after watching this video. I just have one question, can I know the flash Mathias uses for his Ricoh GR III. I too want buy it. Could you please help me in finding the right one ?
It's now 4 years since this video. I love all your content, especially the GRIII of late. Is it still a camera you would recommend. I have tried Nikon, Fuji, Sony and a few others in between but the Ricoh really appeals to me (even though I'm a few years late to the party!).
This brings back so many memories of when I was living in New York. I remember every spot clearly! I might move back, I miss it so much. Great video man!
You were very lucky with Pentax Ricoh GR, because I had only trouble with the GR I and GR II especially the GR II blocked lens they did not want to change it yet it's been five years I do of photography you see my dismay
Sorry to hear that! My old GR also stopped working out of nowhere but at least it was after 6 years of use... All GR's are sensitive to dust so one has to be careful. The GRIII might be better in that regard but onyl time will tell. A wheather sealed GR should definitely be on the engineers list!
Thanks but what were the video scenes of new York shot with at 02:11 for example? The go pro? The colour and clarity is fantastic. Cheers.X H1 surely? Thanks
I'm really enjoying this series! When I had seen Mathias using the flash on his camera, I wondered how much of his overall stealth factor disappears when he is using it, even with him using it midday. Great street shots from both photographers in this video! Thanks for the inspiration!
Fantastic video! I really enjoyed watching Mathias go out and show us how he works. Also the editing and pacing was great. Thank you so much for doing these, I learn so much!
Living in small town in Germany where just holding a medium sized camera (sony a6400) in your hands !!!trying!!! to shoot street, 12:37 really REALLY hit me hard. Ouch.
What camera did you use for the shot at 1:36 - 1:38 (and all the other shots before and after that)? I absolutely love how the camera captured the lights and I've been looking for such a camera since years! The colors look just like they are in reality :)
i loveee so much this photos but i have two questions : what are your settings? and are you are using the ricoh II or III? keep going you are doing an amazing job
Maybe I will be in NYC for street photography in February. Amazing work Samuel 👍🏼. It was a pleasure for me to dive again into the streets of NYC for half an hour.
Are you using JPG / RAW for all the pictures in this video? I found out Mathias is using GR II which is still amazing, but some photos are out of focus in the dark. Whereas your GR III always in focus especially in the night. Thank you for the video Samuel, keep up the good work! Hi from Jakarta
This is better than Netflix, Prime, HBO... all at the same time you're the best man! Congrats! and please keep them coming!
GR&chill
why do you have like only 45k subscribers? this channel is gold!
Thank you Ken! Appreciate your comment! Working on it :)
all popular channels were once small
65K +1 now :)
not very good
142k as of today 😊
I feel like a tourist (in a good way) every time I watch one of your videos. Great to see Mathias' approach and Samuel's photos as always.
Glad to hear that! That is something I wanted to archive. Great to hear the experience comes through! :)
New York is such a great place for street photography... And this is a wonderful video.
That was the best 32 minutes I’ve ever watched 🙏🏽 Amazing dude!
i agree. Amazing
Agreed! Felt like I was right there with them.

Shoes Dangling from Power Lines has nothing to do with Drugs or Drug dealers.
Have you ever thought of doing a series where you meet photographers who don't actually use the GR and spend a day with them shooting it for the 1st time?
That's a cool idea
Very well done. Love this one. It makes me homesick. Excellent musical selection. What more can I say? I know, outstanding vlog.
Hello Sam, thank you so much for this wonderful piece of work with your friend Mathias. I am from Cebu island in the Philippines and your work is so inspiring to us seniors who are going to spend the rest of our lives taking occasional photos of people and streets here.
That is great to hear! I wish you the best with your photography :) Thanks for the comment!

I was thinking the same thing. Which camera and lens was this filmed on?
It was a very well done opener. I think it was a Sony.
Brilliant as always. The song at 27min was so perfect, like the montage scene in a New York based film in the 80s ha ha. Great work.
my favorite sequence too!
So so crazy seeing NYC just a month or two before the start of the COVID epicenter in 2019/2020 and with everyone without masks on. A different time in history for sure. Good stuff Sam
Nice video and some good pics. The best bit however is Mathais' shirt. Great design. Any idea of the designer/make ?
love your music choices. i actually suggested the GRiii to my cousin because of your videos. now i want one as well after having tested his camera.
Wonderful video of a beautiful city. Mathias has a great eye for street. Thanks for sharing.
The New York photography scene is the best.
Love the b&w from this camera. Always looks good. Nice and contrasty.
One of the best series I have seen on RUclips. Congrats and thanks Samuel. I hope you also enjoy your new MFT gear.
Amazing video quality, was this with the X-H1 or Hero 8? Also great colors and contrast on the stills.
Love the GR Project Samuel. Great work. I absolutely love my GRIII.
Thanks Robert! Good to hear you enjoy your GR!

Beautiful cinematography.
Fantastic. Time well spent. That guy was amazing! 🔥🔥 photos
Another fantastic video! Keep 'em coming!
Great video, nice to see New York and a bit of street work.
Makes it when you add a little Synthwave in here and there too.
The Samachine Gun strikes again with another epic video!
Samachine haha :D Thanks Alex!!! Happy new year bro!

Samuel, this is superb! Thanks for another fine video.
Thank you! Appreciate it.
This filming is outrageous
2019 is the new BC, before coronavirus
Terrific video Samuel!! It has a lot of great street info and Mathias seemed like a perfect companion for your visit. I hope you get a chance to get back to NYC soon. It was also nice not having to hear how great a Leica is every few minutes. The GR shots are wonderful!!
Watching with headphones and hearing all the coughing in the background just knowing what happens fast forward 4 weeks
Cheers!
Thought I was the only person who loves Midnight in Paris.
The dynamic range in this footage is crazy. Beautifully shot as always 👌
Thanks Jamie :)
Love your videos GR project! Great work!

Great channel and video. Loving your GR project.
Super cooles Video 😎 klasse geschnitten!! Jetzt will ich auch nach NYC.

Watched this morning before going to work. It made my day.
Awesome! happy to hear you enjoyed it :)
nur ein Wort: MEGA!
you're applying music really well to mood of each photowalk/interview, great job and taste man :)
This brings back so many memories of when I was living in New York. I remember every spot clearly! I might move back, I miss it so much. Great video man!
Glad to hear that!! Thank you Greg!
More such content bro. I just binge watched almost the entire series.
this video is really freeking good ! the quality is up there you should do more video like this !
That was a NEXT level YT doc. The editing was superb and the intro felt like a Woody Allen movie. Only better.
Wow what a compliment! Thanks a lot :) Glad you enjoyed this series.
Your videos are amazing! Amazing edit cuts and just get the feel of NYC! Having guest photographers is amazing as well! 😊
Wieder großen Dank für dieses Video! Komm gut ins neue Jahr! Gruß, Marco
Scheiße!! Man kann hier nur 1 Like da lassen!
Geiles Video mit noch geileren Bildern!
That was awesome!
Congratulations! Great video!
good VDO clip, very enjoying with this one
This was great. If I ever go to NY I would like to meet Mathias and his group as well....
The intro video! 🤯
great video! so much love your color grade. btw which film simulation do u use or the F-log?
Thank you! I use the Eterna Film Simulation and adjust the contrast with the Tone Curve.
Another excellent upload. So inspiring and done so well
Hello,
Which Flash was Mathias using?
You were very lucky with Pentax Ricoh GR, because I had only trouble with the GR I and GR II especially the GR II blocked lens they did not want to change it yet it's been five years I do of photography you see my dismay

Wow ! Really wonderful and inspirational experience of your video ... thank you so much ...
My pleasure!! Thanks for watching!
This was great. I really enjoyed. Good photography and insightful conversation.
The magnetic sensor stabilization on the GR3 is what is convincing me to purchase one. Very enjoyable vid guys thanks😀📸
The stabilisation works very well. I’m able to get sharp shots hand held at night time with minimal lighting 👌
Thanks for watching Dan! I love the stabilization too. Enables me to shoot in low light (not as fast though) easily.
Phenomenal work Samuel. This channel really grows, it was something special year ago, but it gets better with every video. Very inspiring.
Thank you man! Appreciate your comment & support!!
Wish i was able to meet up while here! Great video and your color grades using the XH1 are amazing. Very sharp.
Great stuff mate. I picked one of these up because I watched your videos had it about 2 weeks and I love it.
That is awesome! :) Happy shooting!
Thanks but what were the video scenes of new York shot with at 02:11 for example? The go pro? The colour and clarity is fantastic. Cheers.X H1 surely? Thanks
I am so happy to see someone professional using the Pentax k1000. That was my first ever camera.
This has been my favorite so far. I'd say 85% the video and 15% that I lived there for years, but really this one was great.
Glad to hear that Ryan!! :)
Another great video Samuel. Would love to see New York one day 📷
Great video, love the work of Mathias!!
Nice work! Looking forward to scooping GR soon!
Want to buy a GR and do street shot in New York after watching this video! Many thanks for sharing such great interview!
and be a copy like everyone else. How original.
Amazing video. Really nice project.
I'm really enjoying this series! When I had seen Mathias using the flash on his camera, I wondered how much of his overall stealth factor disappears when he is using it, even with him using it midday. Great street shots from both photographers in this video! Thanks for the inspiration!
great as usual!
Thanks That remind me what NY looks like just before COVID
If those images were from the GR - Wow! I always forget how awesome these little cameras are
Loved the intro, great video lin!
Fantastic video! I really enjoyed watching Mathias go out and show us how he works. Also the editing and pacing was great. Thank you so much for doing these, I learn so much!
Thank you for your comment! Will do my best to continue bringing the content :)
Living in small town in Germany where just holding a medium sized camera (sony a6400) in your hands !!!trying!!! to shoot street, 12:37 really REALLY hit me hard. Ouch.
Very well done!
Thank you!
The best keeper is the one with the two guys fighting.
I most definitely going to do some GR videos, love that camera
What camera did you use for the shot at 1:36 - 1:38 (and all the other shots before and after that)?
I absolutely love how the camera captured the lights and I've been looking for such a camera since years! The colors look just like they are in reality :)
i loveee so much this photos but i have two questions : what are your settings? and are you are using the ricoh II or III?
keep going you are doing an amazing job
VERY GOOD RESULTS. CONGRATULATIONS.
I was wondering what flash that is he has on the gr at the beginning
That is a fujifilm ef-x20 flash.
hey! anyone knows how mathias wasik get this "portra 400" look on his ricoh GR? such beautiful colors wow
Was this a Fuji clip on flash that Mathias used in this video paired with a GRIII? or was it an older Ricoh?
Maybe I will be in NYC for street photography in February. Amazing work Samuel 👍🏼. It was a pleasure for me to dive again into the streets of NYC for half an hour.
Glad to hear you enjoyed it Mike! I'm sure you will enjoy your time in NYC too! :) Happy shooting
22:41 that would have been a great shot; and coffee date. :D
Mathias is a awesome artist. Thanks Samuel for your video. I do not get the settings from Mathias GR. Was it snap mode with 2m?
I think he wasn't using the snap mode. He just focus manually to his preferred distance (probably 2m) and uses zone focusing mos tof the time.
Many great shots. Love 29:08.
Mathias has a very "Tom Hanks" aura.
and the other guy a Freddie Mercury aura
Is he gay !!!?
Great video. Very much enjoyed it. New subscriber!
I just recently switched back to the gr ii ! I tried the fuji x100t but I missed my Ricoh ...
which camera do you use for footages recording? X-H1 and Gopro?
Love this series! #GRist
Cool series those GR episodes! Interesting guest too!
Thanks Chris!
