I never knew how people were turning like that around the corner in Quake 3 Defrag. It's just so smooth. I always thought it was with the left and right keys but, now I know the secret.
11:52 I've got a little bit of anxiety watching this, I was suddenly cheering up to complete the map, idk why got kinda worse after 2400 ups XD Great tutorial btw, well explained and now i understand a little more about strafe jumping. Don't dominate it yet, but it helps understand how it works.
WOW, I'VE BEEN PLAYING TF2 AND REFLEX FOR LIKE YEARS NOW AND ONLY NOW JUST LEARNED THAT YOU HOLD 'W' FOR TURNING CORNERS. Super useful, thanks so much!
I had no idea that holding forward could be better for turning. I thought that, in CPMA, it was only used for going forward, and that it was even more useless in PQL and QC. Thanks.
What I will say is that in QC, it's less used for movement reasons and more to better align yourself for a fight (since movement speed is much slower across the board). It looks like this might change, but I definitely W only for Sorlag to enter into certain engagements.
i've always been kinda confused by the technique of feathering the forward key with each jump... i've always just held "W" down while bhopping (unless making a sharp turn). if hitting forward for each jump is really that advantageous, couldn't you just bind jump and forward to the same key?
It has Vanilla Q3 (Strafe Jump only), Q3 CPM or PQL (Strafe Jump + Air Control) and Vanilla Q4 (Strafe Jump + Crouch Sliding... not covered in the video but just imagine strafe jumping but holding crouch whilst W+Strafe&MovingMouse to turn a corner) - each of which are passive abilities depending on the champion you play. There are some limitations to QC movement that I can't talk about in the video because NDA, but as long as people understand why they're doing what they're doing it's all good. Visor has close to unlocked movement speed, others are perhaps "slower".
Is this exactly how the movement in Quake Champions works too? At least for the champs without slide or aircontrol? So by training here would the skill carry over to QC?
I think the best answer to this would be if you master it in Quake Live or Reflex as per this video, it will carry over (and then some). However, there are differences and one could argue otherwise.
Sure! It's the Race gametype in Reflex (you can practice in single player too by creating a server), using the Accel Meter and Movement Keys widgets. The Workshop add-on is Race Leaderboards by brandon.
thanks a lot. strafe jumping was a skill I wanted to pick up for a looong time, but had no real way of practicing it. Your video is very helpful. Is there anyway to get a hold of you in game, really would like to play a game or two with you some time. Cheers
You'll be able to turn like this as both Anarki and Sorlag! You can do it as Slash whilst Crouch sliding on the ground too. Perhaps I should do some updated videos!
-Played Quake 3 back in the day
-Watching Pro Quake till this day
-Sill no idea how to strafe jump

They probably use left/right in Q3 DF. Reflex's forward turning is much more convenient than CPMA's.

AlphaEnt2 Haha, after you face plant enough walls and platforms you become accustomed to doing it on the regular! :D

Haha you're welcome! :D
Probably because you DON'T hold W to turn corner in TF2... otherwise you don't turn
However, the downside is that now you can't bunnyhop sideways.

Thanks a lot man. I've heard that I should "pivot" around corners, with no further explanation. Finally someone did a proper tutorial :) Cheers!
You're welcome! :)
Best Guide for Strefe jump on YT
Thanks buddy!
Thanks for the vid. You make it easy to understand and are thorough with the basics, which a lot of other tuts on this isn't.
You're welcome. Thanks for the kind words!
so that is how you turn corners ... finally.
They have to put a map like this one in QC! Amazing tutorial, thank you mate.

arkivezero you're welcome!
Great video. Do these mechanics apply to all of the champions in Quake Champions?
It has Vanilla Q3 (Strafe Jump only), Q3 CPM or PQL (Strafe Jump + Air Control) and Vanilla Q4 (Strafe Jump + Crouch Sliding... not covered in the video but just imagine strafe jumping but holding crouch whilst W+Strafe&MovingMouse to turn a corner) - each of which are passive abilities depending on the champion you play. Yup! I'm streaming every day! twitch.tv/justnvc
Hi justnvc, which key do you use for jump and which one for shoot?
Needs indoor beanie tutorial

will you play more reflex?
What are you playing while recording this and how do I see that green bar?
It's a game called Reflex store.steampowered.com/app/328070/Reflex_Arena/ and using the Movement Keys and Accel Meter widgets available in the menu!
Thanks!
rikoLas You're welcome!
what key do u have bind for jump?
Mouse 2!
would you be so kind and tell me what is the name of the mod to the reflex game that u are using here ? (couldn't catch it from the video)

What is the name of this map? I can not find it
Search "radiant" in the workshop and it'll pop up!
justnvc You are a star! Thank you, and for every vid you make!
Mmh ... I can now bunny hop but can't turn in corners ... (champions)

is reflex free?
It's not unfortunately, but it regularly goes on sale via Steam: store.steampowered.com/app/328070/Reflex_Arena/
justnvc OK nice narrator voice :D
Is Reflex active - do people actually play it? Movement looks pretty decent with bunny hopping
That's a shame, the videos I have seen make it look promising.
You can always find one or two active servers tbh. It's much less active that QL but it's played
^ This. Considering the size of the development team you can't help but show admiration for what they've managed to accomplish with Reflex.
very.
