you will very rarely if ever see this kind of stuff in a sitcom these days. Such moving and artistic scenes were common in TV and sitcoms in the 1980's. Now apparently, stuff has changed enough that it doesn't happen.
I think one of the greatest scenes in television history was the Newhart Show on the final show with Larry Darryl and Darryl , when the 2 Daryls spoke for the first time .
Steven Keaton was the perfect comedic "straight man". His reactions to Nick or his son, Alex were priceless! The time when his kids rented out the house and a rowdy football team brought with them the other team's mascot (a Kangaroo) mayhem ensued. Later on when Steven was scolding his son he remarked "there was a Kangaroo in my living room!". Lines like that were what kept the great chemistry going.
I always thought that Stephen was a bit rough on Nick though. I know Nick wasn't what Stephen wanted for Mallory, but he always treated her well, and seemed like a nice and honest guy, so Stephen should have cut Nick more slack at times.
@@dhenderson1810 I tend to agree with you. Both Steven and Alex could have been a little more tolerant. I think Steven was just being her Dad. I couldn't see a mean bone in Nik. He dearly cared for Mallory❤

Absolute stroke of genius on the writers' part. When Steven wakes up, should he see Elyse or Alex or...no wait. Who's the first he'd least want to see? Let's have Nick stroll up. "Heeeeey." And the extended audience reaction tells you that yes, he threw in the hair rub and kiss. How Gross kept it together I'll never know 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

I'm glad Stephen Keaton survived his heart attack on the show. It's a shame that real life doesn't always follow that script.
"Nick"/Scott Valentine stole this scene. If improvised, the head rub & kiss were brilliant.
Look how big that cast grew. The end times for Family Ties.
This was an all around great show.
Michael Gross was a versatile actor. His best role was the made for tv movie, The FBI Murders. He and David Soul are excellent in this.
That is a great movie. Knowing Gross from "Family Ties" I didn't think he would play a good serious role. But he such a talented actor, he nailed the role as Matix in my opinion.
you seem to be talking about him in the past tense. Isn't he still alive (in 2021, as this is being posted)?
First time I saw that scene, that episode I laughed so hard tears came out of my eyes!
Michael Gross was such a brilliant actor!
I miss family shows like this nothing compares nowadays
I wished I had a dad like that when I was a kid.
Not fair to your dad
@@mozfan2436 well so do I , my dad was a negelectful idiot, and yes it is fair maybe Mick's dad was the same. how dare you presume that he is wrong. not all dads are good.
Instead of a deadbeat
Great TV dad on an all-time great sitcom..underrated actor for sure
I met Michael Gross several years ago, and he is one of the nicest, funniest people! I could have talked to him all day long, but only had a short amount of time, as others were waiting to meet him as well.
Loved, loved loved Family Ties! One of the best shows of the 80's.
Too too funny. A great era of TV
I love Michael Gross, the guy has some range - I got to know him as the dad from Family Ties first, then came Tremors and when he became Burt Gummer and became the embodiment of 37th Maxim of The Seventy Maxims of Maximally Effective Mercenaries
: There is no 'overkill.' There is only 'open fire' and 'reload.'
Such an excellent show!! This show and Back to the Future made me a huge Michael J. Fox Fan.
So glad we had sitcoms like this when i was growing up👏🏾👏🏾♥️
Exactly!
Classic Nick one the best sitcoms of 20th century.
Love this show, still watching 40 years on...
Mad Greek
Great tv series that I have on DVD.great family comedy series.good actors and actreses.God bless 70s and 80s tv series.
you will very rarely if ever see this kind of stuff in a sitcom these days. Such moving and artistic scenes were common in TV and sitcoms in the 1980's. Now apparently, stuff has changed enough that it doesn't happen.
" how's youse doin?" "We's doin fine.... at least I's doin fine". Lmfao
I think one of the greatest scenes in television history was the Newhart Show on the final show with Larry Darryl and Darryl , when the 2 Daryls spoke for the first time .
2021 who's with me!
I didn't watch Family Ties often, but I do remember this episode and thought it was funny.
@@dhenderson1810 I tend to agree with you. Both Steven and Alex could have been a little more tolerant. I think Steven was just being her Dad. I couldn't see a mean bone in Nik. He dearly cared for Mallory❤
I sure hope you guys have jobs
“Load film now..”
I loved this show. Michael Grossman was one of the greatest tv dads! I still watch reruns from time to time and it always amazed me how he and Michael J Fox played off each other. Sometimes you could see MJF turn his head to keep from laughing. It really was one of the best show on tv back then. Times have changed so much, there is nothing on television now that even compares.
Michael Gross was legendary in Family Ties
Michael was a great actor on the best show on TV
This was my absolute favorite show growing up!!
Well written scene, levity during a dramatic scene creates unforgettable T.V. moments.
I TRULY LOVE FAMILY TIES. I AM GOING TO WATCH MORE SHOWS. THANKS FOR THE BEST ENTERTAINMENT.
And then he gave us “Tremors”. 👍🏻
God damn right. Steven Keaton, Remo Williams, and Ren from Footloose took out some gigantic worms. Great movie.
Nick only has to say one word and it's phenomenal 😂
Too right. I get the feeling the touching of the hair and the kiss were improv'ed
@@mytmytScott did improvise that! 😃
I never saw this before. Great lines.
The comedic timing. 🤣
Best show ever ❤
Absolute stroke of genius on the writers' part. When Steven wakes up, should he see Elyse or Alex or...no wait. Who's the first he'd least want to see? Let's have Nick stroll up. "Heeeeey." And the extended audience reaction tells you that yes, he threw in the hair rub and kiss. How Gross kept it together I'll never know 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Now for entertainment, we have keeping up with the Kardashian’s and housewives. Back then we had family ties, full house, the brady bunch, and much more of genius inventions to entertainment
I'm a 2 time Brady bunch trivia champ.
Those are cable tv offerings. Nowadays on broadcast tv you've got Young Sheldon, The Goldbergs, The Conners, Black-ish, American Housewife, and The Neighborhood for family shows.
youre right that is great !!!
I like this show because they wrote the parents like they were real people, not just as straight lines for the kids.
One of the best TV dad's. Loved Michael Gross.
That was sooooooo FUNNY!!!! GREAT TIMING!!!!
Michael was on The Young & The Restless around the same time as Meredith. They both played horrible parents to different characters. He was also on Anger Management (the sitcom) as a shady therapist. He's a great comic actor.
I thought he was playing one of the inmates....?
