I have been going through tough times for 3 years now, lost my friends, lost my girlfriend, lost my self respect. However, I converted to Islam 3 months ago, I have quit cigarettes, quit meeting people who are bad influences and retained my faith in Allah. Please pray for me my brothers and sisters because I wish to support my young brother and parents. I can live on the streets but I can't let my family down. Please pray for me and I will for you. I wish everyone reading this all the best. Allah hu Akbar

As an English speaking revert to Islam, I MADE THE MISTAKE OF LEARNING THE SALAT IN ARABIC WITHOUT GRASPING THE ENGLISH MEANING, so when I would pray, I would be like a robot and the words were not penetrating my heart and mind. So, I decided to GO SLOW, and say a verse of arabic in Arabic, then, soon afterwards, repeat the full english translation (silent and sometimes whispering)BEFORE proceeding to the following verse. Doing this made me feel if though I was more authentic in my prayers and not just rattling off the Arabic, no matter how elegant it sounded. After some time, I found that I could say the prayers in Arabic with my heart and mind knowing the meaning for sure. Try this method. It worked for me. You don't want to be a "rattler" without knowing what you are saying.

but at the same time try to understand the meaning on the monitor in front of our pray in our mother tongue language ?????
I started doing this and I LOVE to pray EVEN MORE !

Even as a muslim there are somethings I thought I was doing correctly but eventually discovered they are wrong, and that's fine.
You just continue and go on,
but correctly after learning the correct way.
If you discover you have been doing something wrong, that's okay, it's fine as long as you didn't know.
And also if you have been doing something in salah wrong without knowing, it's accepted. You just learn not to make the same mistake twice.
So don't be scared of not knowing a lot about Islam and just learn as you go.

@@bluearmyreen8273 Yes, but you need to understand that the number one priority is to read Qur'an in its original language. Even if you don't understand the meaning, you will still gain the most hasanat by reading it in the original before any translation (of course, recited w/ the right pronunciation). But its true that many of us aren't arab, and like alot of people, I'd like to know what I am reading so I can feel more connected with my faith and story. So just read both together. I read the verses first in arabic, then read the translation. Sometimes I do in increments so I'll read 5 ayahs then read the translation, or sometimes if I'm in a rush, I'll just read the arabic and then get back to reading the translations later.

Yes but Arabic is a unique language. Translations can not give the true meanings of the words. Also we don't want anything changed so we all pray in one language the exact same way. If not words and meanings will change and next thing you know people are using different meanings and words and then we have a million different denominations arguing about who's right or wrong. ( Which is already a issue but it'll be even worse..Sunni, Shia, Wahabi, Sufi).

You are totally fine in doing that in my opinion, as the entire purpose of prayer is to help us become better people by remembering God and controlling ourselves against base desires. Many Muslims you will encounter pray in Arabic without understanding it, thinking gives them magical rewards. This is not to suggest that God does not listen to our prayers, but that there is a logical purpose for regular prayer.
I’ve not been observing Namaz or the fast all my life, while remaining convinced of the noble Quran as the word of God. Yet after understanding the importance of prayer, I’m all for it, albeit in a decipherable language. With all due respect for the Sheikh, the meaning if the verses for prayer are not that complicated. Where we are stuck, we can always look for different translations of an Arabic word in English to help us feed our logical reasoning.
To me, Islam, logic, reason and science are inseparable and complement each other. During the so called golden age of Islam, Scientific advancements were a result of Islam and not exclusively so.

Assalamu alaikum, Ive struggled for so long since my beautiful sister was brutally murdered, i was diagnosed with a brain tumour, my phone was silent from those id spent my life being there for, when i was at my lowest, i called out and it was Allah who listened and remained with me since. I realised i needed to lose, to appreciate just how much i have and how lucky and privileged i am. I'm due to take my shahada in front of witnesses. But i do struggle with understanding prayer and ask for your guidance on how to begin to truly forgive the man who did that to my sister. I have no Muslim family or friends, and yet I've never felt more of a community. Please could you keep me in your duas, Help me to never stop learning. May Allah continue to bless you Alhamdulillah 🤲

Salaam, I understand your argument. The question that arises here is the same as the Reformation. A few verses learned might give one the essence of the faith and some of rules if they learn the translation as well. Yes translation is a corruption or dilution of the essence but it creates a benchmark to begin the process to interpret the Quran and then to learn arabic proper it embrace the full essence and consciencely submit one's wil to the faith. Assalam Walekum. Alhamdulillah. Just a different perspective from one whom is too westernised. Apologies but I had to put it out there.

This always came to my mind as the logic on why we read Quran and pray in Arabic. But here is where I am confused - I am not a native Arabic speaker but I understand almost everything we say in the salah bc I memorized it with meaning intentionally. The meaning of it I understand in the language that I know so when I am praying i think of AllahuAkbar as Allah is the greatest and similarly for all other phrases. So whether I say it in Arabic or not I am thinking of it in the language that I know as I am offering my salah

I have listened to you for years and may Allah guide us both. I strongly believe that the Quran is enough for me. I do not like to read "commentary" as I know it is someones opinion of what they believe Allah s.w.t means with his ayahs. Allah tells me that some of his verses are clear and other not so clear to everyone. I follow what I understand of the book and I do not follow conjecture. I hope we can all compete in goodness and all achieve paradise by his mercy, he is indeed the most merciful.

Linguistics is one of my personal hobbies that I adore. It is true, there are sayings in Arabic, Aramaic, Ottoman Turkish, & Persian that the meanings absolutely cannot be translated accurately into English nor other languages like Modern Turkish. English in comparison lacks. It is like taking a painting and removing all the shades, hues, and only leaving the black and white image. There's no grays, no pastels, no depth. So in order to gain the most meaningful understanding of Quran is a challenge for converts to learn Arabic language for its blossoming fruits, textures, shades, hues, and liveliness as a linguistic artform. It's sister languages are just as beautiful. The Quran is unique in that I was told that every grammatical occurrence in Arabic is present in the text of the Quran. It is a grammatical guide, a holy book, and a guide for how to live the best possible way. Unfortunately, people who cannot read or are illiterate, need to be taught to read. Spreading literacy is our greatest challenge globally.

@@oromtitiwbo5078 The biggest obstacle to learning is psychological mental blocks. I had a young female friend who wanted to join the military, but couldn't do a pushup. An Arabic teacher told me he was more than happy to teach his wife Arabic, but no matter how many times he made an effort, she didn't want to learn at those moments, so nothing would stay in her memory. Later, these two different women had a change in mentality. My friend, at midnight at the university track finally accomplished one pushup. Immediately after, she could do another and another. Her "I cannot do this" mentality disappeared and her capacity emerged in full bloom. The same occurred with my Arabic teacher's wife. She decided she really wanted to learn Arabic language and afterwards her lessons were much more fluid. The next mistake is trying too hard to learn language by grammar books. Natural learning is through babbling. Babies don't read first. They learn sounds first and then words. Then sentences. All through interaction with people. To learn a language, you must learn to overcome fear of speaking. Just speak. If you make a mistake, people will help you. I speak terrible Turkish and terrible German, but I speak it anyway because people who are native speakers have no problem helping me to learn the correct way to speak their language. Most appreciate my efforts to learn. So babbling is the way. Also, if you can't pronounce a word, start at the end and work your way to the beginning (Pimsleur method). Have fun learning.
