I wish I would of seen this video sooner. Your channel is so simplistic, and yet informative. Gives new people to the hobby a clear understanding and doesn't scare them from getting into the hobby.
That’s my goal. Thanks for watching
Thanks, I wasn't sure about the air stone but listening to you I know I made the right choice in buying the air stone.
👍🏻🐟👊🏼
air stones are great for water circulation, air for fish + plants and visual interest .
Man what a difference! My fish love it!
+Tony Simsek cool
Yeah I know this is an old video but air stones are extremely beneficial they even help with cycling your tank with the bacteria I am going to start running m i n e 24/7 even in my planted tank thanks for the video
🌱👍🏻🐟
When air bubbles break the surface the gas exchange equalizes both O2 and CO2 between the tank and the atmosphere (there is both O2 and CO2 in the air - actually more CO2 than O2!).
I have a bubble bar running 24/7 on one end of my 60g low tech planted tank and let algae grow behind it (as a pseudo algae scrubber). Lush plants and happy fish!
+Mike Vormwald nice. That’s a great idea
I think you could use ferts and root tabs and when you do a water change you can spray the with good stuff. I have a black moor he's cute
Awesome
Hello, Is it possible to keep only air pump in my 15 gallon planted tank and remove HOB filter? As the water change can clear out the fish wastes so why Both air pump and HOB water filter should run in the tank. Please advise with your recommendations.
You can try but water circulation is important as well as carbon to remove impurities
Thanks. Will do. I watched your videos along time ago before I had an account. Love you channel
+MASS Aquariums thx
I put my air pump on a thick rubber mat so it's higher than the air stone do not need a valve. Also helps with noise.
Nice
Thanks this vid was so helpful I just order that piece u said I'm glad u spoke on it like your vids keep it up bro
Thanks
yeah i have an airstone in my aquarium, a small one that goes in a scull that blows large and small bubble bobble! ^_^ I also have the oneway-valve. it's a must! now i have 2 exits on my airpump, and im thinking of adding another long airstone to it. also i have ordered an airstone to my 100L wich basicly now just have airflow thru the filterpump. there ive ordered a long stone but they where out of oneway-valves so i have to go to the local to get that but at the same time i will see if i can fint that adjustment controller you where talking about, i do have 2 options on my pump wich gives small flow or full flow tho :)
👍
Well done. One tank I have an air stone I think five inches long and a hang filter works well. It's a tall tank 20 something gal. Just gravel. Just want to get more plants. Not all in one day. In my other tank 30 gal tall. Dirt substrate 250 Eheim and a 250 power head also move the head around at each water change 25 to 50 % each week ( no dead zone ) good surface movement in both tanks. In my 30 I have more of an algae problem. I use a T5 for 5 to 6 hours. Just wanted to pass on what I'm doing and it's working. Well done.
Wow. That's awesome. Good work
I'm just starting the hobby. Very nervous. I'm going to get real plants soon. Haven't got fish yet either just trying to get my tank cycled first. I have a 20 gallon with a big ship with a air stone with lots of bubbles and a long air stone that lays on the bottom. Control valves where do I put them if I need it. Please give me your in put. Love watching you. I've see all you videos. Trying to figure out how to send a pic of my tank but don't have fish or live plants yet. Thanks again have a great day. Gina
You can put them close to the pump or some place easy to access so you can control air. Congratulations on entering the hobby. You’ll love ot
I so wish air stones were a good idea (I've seen your update comments) cause I really just love the way they look but dangit I want my tank as healthy as possible...
You can still use them
I have a 75 gallon and 2 air stones plus a bubble bar and my aquarium is beautiful and I have beautiful happy fish 🐠
Awesome. I do love a good bubble bar
Hey. Great video. Should i place the air stone in the end with filter intake or outlet?
Either one but I like by the outtake
Would you still recommend having an air stone if u have a wave make running already?? I have a 100gl planted tank.
It never hurts IMO
I wouldnt say you need an airstone per say. Only thing that does is make the bubbles smaller. What you really need is to disturb the water surface which can be done either by lifting water up or pushing air down. Wether it is water hitting the surface from above or air hitting it from below will create the same result. Im more of a waterfall kinda guy personally. But thats mostly because my fishtanks are in the same room that I sleep and water pumps produce alot less sound than air pumps.
Uep
May I suggest to put the check valve above the water level and not close to the air pump. I had an accident that somehow and it was disconnected... water was leaking in my living room. Just keep that in mind
Roger that. Good advice. Although I haven't run an air stone in a long time it is good to keep in mind. Thanks for watching.
super helpful video, thanks!
You’re welcome
Great job, with this channel. Great job with this video. I have subscribed.
Thanks. I appreciate it
Hey Mike, What kind of light do you recommend for the planted tank?
Pumping air into the tank is not what is giving oxygen to the water. It is important to explain the actual principles behind what we do sometimes. The air pump/bubbles provides water flow and disturbs the water surface allowing gas exchange. This exchange can be done with water flow or air but the underlying principles are the same, surface agitation. How you go about it and how much surface agitation is needed and what equipment used is all subject to the individual setup.
Very true and well said
wish i could hear better. sounds like good info and i had volume all the way up.
Sorry. It comes out crystal clear on any of the phones I watch it on
checkd out video on my phone and it did sound much better. orginally i heard on my computer at work myb thats why it sounded really low. thanks for the info. i hav a 125 planted dirt substrate discus tank with massive filtration and was wondering about airstones if they wer nessecary. cool vid :)
Wow just saw this. No they are not. I no longer use them
Yea little late there bro..lol
Love these type of videos; I'm very new to the hobby, but I believe the greatest factor to oxygen retention is the chemical composition and water temperature. I live air stones and the bubbles do increase gas exchange, but i believe to retain the O2 or CO2 your temperature and water chemistry must be condusive for this.
Well said
Hello, are their fluorescent, bulbs or are their
LED lights?
I believe these where T5 HO fluorescent bulbs
Great tips.
Thank you
by the way its the first rule to place ur pump above water level so i dont understand why the back flow control valve mmmm .
Thanks for a GREAT video
Thanks
Have you ever tried the Top Fin Aquarium Air Stone Disk? And if your running just one or two air stones do you need to get the one rated for your tank size or will just a Tetra Whisper 20 UL Air Pump be enough ? It's for a 40 gallon breeder.
That should be good
When it comes to submerged filters, I allways see them being plase on the short sides of the tanks, is there a reason why? I have a Fluval U4 in my 42 gallon tank, I check the water every weak and filtration is very good but I still have small debri floating around in the tank. My filter is on the rights side of the tank but I was thinking why not put it center on the long side, filtration intake is on both side of the canister so wouldnt that be more sufficient way to get water into it? I allso keep getting green spot algae and a little brown algae on the glass and I just cant get rid of it. even with reduces feeding and ligh time to 7 hours.
I have an external filter in my planted tank which also creates surface agitation and some bubbles are always there do u think it's enough for a 2 feet tank or will I need an air pump
That should be plenty
i have a penn plax diver and with whisper air pump in my 5 gal and it created huge bubbles is and creates a alot of surface agitation do i need finer bubles i also have a hang on the back filter is this good amount o2 in my tank i only have a 2 inch crayfish
+Toguro probably don't even need it in a tank that size
Could you use a bubble curtain in a planted tank
Yep of course
I have a question it's always 80 degrees in my house do I still need a heater for tropical fish in a freshwater tank
Nope
Would you recommend an air stone for a 10g tank w hob filter and some plants??
Not necessary but if you like the bubbles go for it
If I don't want the extra bubbles in my tank, or an air stone ... Do you think it would add O2 to the tank if I put the air stone down in the sump? Would it oxygenate the water and then would the sump pump pull this oxygenated water to the tank?
Not sure. You could try it. I don't even bother with them anymore. As long as the surface is agitated some how
What kind of plant do you have in the back? (The tall skinny ones)
Thanks!
Jungle Val. Thanks for watching
Im worried an ayirstone would reduce co2 for plants to use to grow better?
It can. I shut it off at night
Dude, thanks for the tips but you really should show off your fish, you can hardly see it! I can now author a book on air stones but really was hoping you'd do some close ups on your tank and fish ! Lol
Sorry
Do you run it for the whole entire day? Cause I just have a low tech 14 gallon tank with beginner plants
I have actually stopped my airstone awhile ago and I just run circulation pumps now. It creates nice surface agitation and doesn't make all that noise and moves the plants around nicely.
Do you turn your air stone off at night ?
I left it on 24/7 when I had it
@@MASSAquariums does 24 7 affect the plants and fish, or they're fine with it running
Do canister filters have a back check valve? I've been interested in them lately but I'm afraid of coming home to find the water going out to the canister but not going back to the tank...I've heard horror stories lol
I have never had any issues. I love canister filters.
if your using a co2 system is it alright to use a air stone with it
+Sam Belfer yes at night
Reading some of your comments, today do you still recommend an air stone for a planted tank?
It’s not necessary but it does provide surface agitation
What is your take on an under ground filter?
Don’t like them
powerhead do the bubles very good!
Yeah
hi can i run an airstone and co2 together like during the day and night for air and not co2 at night i need help
+TriniRCmodels yep
Thank so much bro and thank you again for the speedy reply
I have a planted tank where i have a volcano in it. Generally i run the red light/air at night and I'm have a hard time deciding on whether or not i should keep the air pump running at all and if it benefits my tank. Any advice?
Airstones will benefit your tank at night with live plants. I moved on from airstones awhile ago. I prefer circulation pumps for surface agitation now.
Thanks man. I'll check that out
Would an airstone be necessary if you have a co2 tank?
No
My aquarium is hooded... Will air stone help to oxygenate closed aquarium?
Yes
I added an air stone in my filter bed which is behind the tank. Its a water box design tank. I want to get more oxygen to the biological bacteria. I have co2 and high light and so far not noticing a drop in Co2. Good idea?
It will help to get some more O2 I. The tank for sure
@@MASSAquariums after 3 days Im seeing less Algae, ammonia and a rise in ORP. Im also using K1 micro media and using the air stone to circulate them. ORP has steadily went up so things are looking better. It was below 180 prior to this and I was seeing more algae. So hopefully all good. I am noticing a rise in Ph at night possibly dude to less CO2 staying in the water.
Can more fish be added to a tank with an air stone?
Depends on size of fish. Schools yes. Giant fish no
In my planted tank after stopping the co2 at night, whether shall i turn ON airstone pump for O2?
Sure
Does it affect fish? By morning to night co2 and night till morning airstone pump
Not really
thx... Is it possible to get me all kind of plants? Here i could not able to get plants and how much it cost?
What is the blue background in your tank please ?
Poster board
I just had to remove a 3 - 4 inch Ciclid (brown, looks like a Jack Dempsey) from my tank. He started terrorizing a few other fish. What do I do with him? I would love to give him away nearby. Is there a way to find people who might be interested. I live in lower Westchester County, just above NYC.
Jump on my FB group and post it. Someone will grab it.
So if I have plants do I unplug my air stone at night and plug it back in in the morning?
You would technically want to plug it in at night and unplug in the morning or put it on a timer but it’s fine to just leave it running
Get a timer so no plugging in and unplugging
dude, i'm still new to the hobby. i have a 10 gallon tank that has only 1 live plant and 1 betta. do i need an airstone?
+h no it's not necessary
MASS Aquariums thanks for the info!
do air stones actually have any effect on the water flow in the aquarium? for instance, if you place it in the wrong spot, will it cause unnecessary swirls?
It's not really for flow but to agitate the surface and oxygenate the water
The greater the surface of the water, the easier the exchange of gases into and from the water. Any agitation of the surface increases its size. (waves and whatnot, their form and how that works, more scientific explanation easily found online.)
i does create a flow, but not that great. i have a 20 gallon with a HOB near the right side so only that side of the tank is getting circulation. That's also not good because it creates a "dead spot" on the left side, therefore, beneficial bacteria wont thrive in that zone. So i added an air pump with an 8 inch long stone on the left right next to the glass. it did create some current and it actually lowered my nitrates a lot, like from 15-20 to 5-10..
Is having an Airstone and a diffuser too much?
Put them on a timer
What a good time to put air stones on a timer? How many hours?
At night when your lights are out
Do air stones remove CO2?
no!
Old video, but worth mentioning that you definitely don't want to run air stones if you're supplementing co2.
Only on off hrs
I run CO2 and I also run an air stone. When the CO2 is running during lights on the air stone is off, when the CO2 turns off my air stone turns on. Every tank should run an air stone as far as I'm concerned. My tank is a 90 gallon heavily planted aquarium with about 75 small schooling fish. I have run my tank both with air stone and without and I can say my tank in general does much better with the air stones. Mass Aquariums is absolutely right when he say "only in the off hrs". CO2 or no CO2 every tank should run an air stone because the benefits are many.
P.S. I also noticed some of my fish love playing in the air stone bubbles, they go to the top of the bubble column and single file they swim down through the bubbles, my Hillstream loaches love to stick to the glass in the bubble stream and just hang out there with the bubbles and water flowing over them. Happy plants and happy fish, that's what it's all about.
you kinda look like ryan from the office from the side.
👍🏻
air stone or co2 diffuser??
This was an air stone
MASS Aquariums no sorry I meant. which would you say would be better in planted tank?
CO2 all day
666baraka CO2. turn on your lights and CO2 at the same time every day for 6-10 hours. turn off CO2 an hour before you turn off your lights.
People thinking he green screened the tank? Man they on drugs. Obviously it's a real fish tank in the background. Great tips. F the haters
+che350z haha. No worries. This was one of my favorite tanks
So you run it allday all night ?
Yes I did
man i sooo mutch whant to have acuarium but in bulgaria this is inposibal its too expensiv to have one :(
That stinks
I can never grow plants my discuss fecking pulls them up or eats them, plus he loves the air stone swims around in it same with clowns they seem to love it too.
Yep. It happens
Why do u remind me of the guy from prison break .... the guy which did the role of T BAG ..
Lol. Not sure. Haha
I can barely hear anything dudes!
Sorry. Old video. No mic
dude. water agitation gets rid of CO2 so fast your plants will go yellow before your eyes. unless your tank is tall and thin with very limited water surface area (as oppose to regular flat and open tanks with a relatively large surface contacting the air), you don't need to do anything about O2 in your tank. overstocking can cause O2 competition so don't overstock your tank even if it is a planted one.
Don't air stones deplete co2 levels? Which is the opposite of what you want to be doing.
Yes they do as well as adding 02. But I have gotten away from airstones awhile ago. I prefer a circulation pump now.
Okay, thanks for the info! great channel. I just join getting more views and ideas from youtubers.
You actually need c02 in a planted aquarium.. NOT air stones.. c02 feed plant plant feed air. Adding too much air is a no no over saturation of air can off balance and kill ur fish lol
MASS Aquariums I am a strong believer in running air stones during the night periods, to assist the tank during the minimum O2 night time trough.
Using a timer, the air pump turns off before the lighting period, and only water pumps/filters run 24hrs.
Water circulation, by airlstone or powerhead would only deplete co/2 at night or when you are artificially pumping it into your tank. During daytime hours, it would allow excess oxygen to escape and help absorb co/2 from the atmosphere. The problem seems to be that, in order to force faster growth, some aquatic gardeners want co/2 levels much higher than occur in nature.
God my eyes must be bad, the top right corner of the video behind your hat keeps periodically shaking/ swaying like a green screen in the wind. But you have a moving tank with reflections so it’s obvious you’re not in front of a screen.
The hell is wrong with my eyes?
Hahahaha. No green screen
Don't need it in a heavy planted tank
True true. This vid was a year ago. I agree. Check out some of my latest vids. Thanks for watching v
To be honest I like the way a bubble curtain looks in any aquarium its more old school but not necessary it depletes co2 but who cares.it not a lot however.
You need a better mic
I know. Old video new mic
MASS Aquariums good to know. I’ll watch your new ones.
Audio is terrible
Yes I have since upgraded
Ugh... 10 minute video about nothing. The main problem about airstones is _splashing_. Massive amounts of splashing above surface of the water, If you have light fixtures hovering close to the water surface, this splashing water will quickly kill the lights or at least fog them up. If you have lights higher up, splashing will spill lots of water out of the tank and onto on the floor. Transparent cover helps with splashing, but it will quickly fog up and crust up and thus block the light. This is a severe problem, which makes using airstones virtually impossible. Which why people don't use them.
If you want to make a video about airstones, this is a problem you have to talk about. People don't want to hear about oxygen and air pumps. These banal basics are already understood by everyone. People want to hear about how to deal with _splashing_. I don't see a single word about it in this video.
Thanks for watching
It looks like you green screened you're tank into the video. Why does the background look like a shaky curtain?
Yeah not sure. This was awhile ago. Camera may have been on a weird setting or bad angle. This is an old video. Don't even use airstones anymore. I assure you my tank is real. Lol. Check out a more recent video. Thanks for tuning in.
Looks like RUclips's "Auto-stabilizing" feature to me. It probably detected a "Shaky video" and tried to correct it.
your water is kind of cloudy.
checkd out video on my phone and it did sound much better. orginally i heard on my computer at work myb thats why it sounded really low. thanks for the info. i hav a 125 planted dirt substrate discus tank with massive filtration and was wondering about airstones if they wer nessecary. cool vid :)
If you watch some of my newer videos. I do t use them anymore. I use circulation pumps to get some surface agitation. I have gotten away from the airstones. I like the pumps better
