This is what happens when you don’t invest money in maintaining infrastructure, and cut corners with deregulations.
It goes back decades, Jimmy Carter wanted to invest in upgrading infrastructure across the country when he was president….republicans axed the program. Over the years since, whenever those in Washington wanted to do something, the plans would get axed yet again. The excuse is always “it’s too expensive”. Those truss bridges are like a house of cards. Take a beam out and the whole thing is likely to collapse..
It's the nature of suspension, in which everything is held up under super taut cables. Sad that two professional harbor pilots on board didn't have the sense to drop all anchors when the ship lost all power the first time, stopping her and addressing the mechanical issues before proceeding to the most important part of the passage. As a tugboat captain this makes me mad to watch.
Their company is about to owe Baltimore a bridge, 5 years worth of economic hardship fees, and a half dozen funerals/manslaughter expenses.
One anchor was dropped. Anchors will not stop a ship immediately.
I did hear the ship did give bridge authority notice that they lost navigation and bridge authority did what it could so more people won't be on the bridge. Unfortunately, some people were working on bridge repairs and didn't get to safety in time. Also heard they lost power and though it was back and then lost it again.
SAME HERE CAPTAIN!
Thank you for your professional response. I don't know a darn thing about ships, but my first thought was similar. In other words, why didn't they act sooner if they knew they were having trouble and possibly a mechanical failure.
This engineer should be talking about the fenders rather than the structure of the bridge itself. It is interesting that he mentions the similar incident in Tampa Bay in 1980. That was eight years after the FSK bridge was opened. My question is: What did Maryland do, in light of the bridge collapse in Florida, to review and improve the protection for the FSK bridge? Nothing?
