    Thank you for mentioning Harry Noller (8:25) I helped rebuild his deck, and just meeting him and knowing what he had done gave me a needed reminder of how fascinating cellular biology is. I read a book called "Life Itself" in college , and loved what it explained; but it felt too late to pursue as a career. Having videos like this one to browse through when i want to feel awe is so nice. Thank you for your enthusiasm in teaching; and thank you RUclips.

    How did biochemical pathways proceed before all these catalysts were present in cells?

    • @peybak
      @peybak 3 года назад +1

      That's a good question. There is a hypothesis called "The RNA-world hypothesis." RNA can convey information AND be a catalyst. It's one of the things that Prof. Stubbe mentioned in an earlier lecture that, for example, a ribosome can function as a catalyst without any protein. Anyway, it's obvious that not all of the pathways came together at once.

    This was great but I wish she talked about peptides. I thought enzymes help turn proteins into peptides. I'm trying to learn if it's possible to make peptides at home by combining specific enzymes with amino acids. Does anyone know if this is possible?

    • @ayyycortana7196
      @ayyycortana7196 3 года назад

      Peptides are amino acid residues peptide bonded together that form a chain of peptides called polypeptides, which are what proteins are composed of when of sufficient length. Enzymes are proteins with catalytic activity. They are a subclass. You cannot create a specific peptide sequence at your house from amino acids. The lab procedure is far too complex.
