These comments make me smile. I grew up in the Blue ridge Mountains late 60's early 70's. We listened to these "murder ballads" from our parents who grew up listening on RKO's. It is one of many that still makes me cry. "The death of little Kathy Fiscus" and " the drunkards prayer" are some others. Come back home people, God's trying to tell you something.
I as a fret-less banjoist like Frank love his vocals and strumming patterns. He was a true master and when I play the bars the ladies love all the murder ballads!
I don't understand the lyrics. It sounds like the father urged his son to kill Rose Connolly (My father always told me "Money will set you free - If you will murder that pretty little miss whose name is Rose Connolly.") But later the father regrets it????? What...??!!??!!
See Danny's response below. But that is some COLD stuff, ain't it, telling your son to kill a girl because he thinks he can bribe the kid's way out of it?
I'm pretty sure that the singer got Rose pregnant, but she was from a poor family and not up to the high standards of Dad. So don't marry her, son, just knock her off and my money will get you free. Bad parental advice. Should have hanged the father too.
I think the implication is that the son has got her pregnant. Since she’s of lower class the father wants his son to murder her so he doesn’t have to marry her. Thinking his money will keep his son out of trouble with the law.
I am so proud of my father-in-law he touches my heart every time I hear him sing I really love when he sings Tom Dooley
I’m probably the only Hispanic that is in love with this music👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Haha yeah
Not true, I love it too.

one of the best fretless possum skin banjo players ever rip sir you are a legend
Beautiful. One of the best versions I have heard
Most contemporary performers play it too damn fast. This is the right tempo. Old school.
Possibly the different singing style owes to Macon having been a performer, Proffitt a folksinger.
Where is this from? Wow!
I'm thinking, probably, the Newport Folk Festival?

His father thought he could get him off. "Money will set you free" But he was convicted and hung anyway.

Kool. You might like the track 'The Ghost of Rose Connelly' on my channel.
Frank Profitt copying another GB Grayson and Whitter song. It’s Ok but Inferior to the original.
