As a short time homesteader, but a long time home builder, I would not put a horizontal trim at the bottom. It’s just going to catch water and cause rot.
We cut trees out of our woods took it to a mill cut into boards for a new 12' x 32' chicken house. Used husband's grandfather's 50 JD tractor to drag the logs out of the woods. It is a board and baton design. Yours looks perfect enough just like ours.
Chuck, if the lumber you are using isn't kiln dried, you might think about only nailing the boards on one side only, and the batten's with one nail only in the center of the batten. That will allow the wood to dry and shrink without splitting.
Used motor oil & Diesel fuel 50/50 will stain and preserve that siding for years ! Bug sprayer and spray lite coats so it will soak it up ! Wasp, bugs wont touch it , snakes looking for a warm spot hate it ! Fence post , love it ! you'll be surprised how well it does !
Wow now that is old school I haven't seen a person use a hammer and nails in years what happened to the nail gun I still remember when I got my shop which is now my house framed by a contractor I cut my own lumber with the tooth fur trees I had here let him dry out for a year he hated it because it was so hard it kept bending his nails that was back when they didn't really have nail guns
Hey Chuck, can I ask why you did not but the boards tight together? Green poplar will shrink when it dries and the gap will be wide enough. You can put your hand between the boards. Also only nailing one side of your board until it dries will keep it from splitting when it draws.
What will you do if need to replace pump? I’m going off of when they replaced mine and had to raise it out of the ground in sections of pipe??? I have no idea what I’m talking about lol

Great tip! Hadn’t considered that. Thanks!
Happy, happy. It is always so much more satisfying to have done it ourselves. I am glad to see wha you did. May it last for decades.
Very nice! I'm sure it is a good feeling to have milled all of that lumber and used it for this project.

After the wood has finished drying then go about finishing nailing it off.
Guess I didn’t make it clear in the video. That’s exactly how I put them up. Thanks!

I left enough of a gap to nail the batten without nailing the board to allow for movement. The boards were only nailed on one side.
Lookin' good!
Thanks!
Are you building a Well house😂😂😂😂 Good job Chuck

I do appreciate the tip though. Always interested in what I can learn from folks.
Cut to the thickness of your stock, not the maximum of your blade, saves time and your sawblade.
