The “Ant Or Dec” line gets even funnier if you know that they always stand with Ant on the left, and still there’s a great contingent of people who can’t tell them apart.
As a guy who moved from the UK to a rural town in the midwest in my 20s, I can attest that a "cute british accent" goes a really long way. Any accent, in fact.
Richard Curtis has said that he regrets the fat-shaming and that he cut out the plotline about the school headmistress's sapphic romance. The film does have issues, but it's extremely sentimental and that's what matters at Christmas. 🙂
@@fictionaldarling The scene is out there - should be on RUclips somewhere? I kinda think it was included on the bonus features of the DVD at some point.
I love the theory (though I'm sure it's not true) that Rowan Atkinson is like a Christmas angel. He's there to distract whilst Sam runs to Joanna and he drags out Alan Rickman buying the gift he shouldn't be buying 🤣
Funnily enough, Carol at the end is played by Claudia Schiffer who Daniel said he'd hook up with jokingly, so it was a cheeky bit of casting there. And Joanna is played by Olivia Olson who goes on to voice Marceline in Adventure Time. Funny how Thomas Brodie-Sangster never aged, he just got taller.
As someone with a lot of rural Portuguese family: the whole town coming to see the weird guy proposing to one of the local women is a lot more realistic than you might think. (According to my mom, the most inaccurate part about that storyline is how she stripped down before getting in the water, because „a real Portuguese woman would be too much of a prude for that“. She was only half joking) Also it’s really funny to hear him butchering the language, makes me feel a lot better about my subpar Portuguese.
Snape's wife is of course also Professor Trelawney. Just sayin' In a cut scene someone exclaims that if Angels ARE real, they would wander the earth doing tiny interventions to help out.
The bit with the Titanic scene it was implied that Sam watched it with his mom. Though I think it was in there as way to get the lead cast of Sense and Sensibility ( 1995) in there.
They made us watch this for an intro to film course in university. Now, I'm not typically a rom com guy. I enjoy some, especially if an actor I like is in it or they put some wacky spin on the formula like time travel, but more often than not they're not for me. That being said, I ADORE this movie. The cast is amazing, the writing is generally very witty, and we get so many different varieties of love stories, some of which are messy and don't have happy endings. They're beautiful even if they're tragic, and I think that's what makes this movie hit so hard.
17:40 fun fact, Olivia Olsen (Joanna’s actress) sang SO WELL on set that test audiences didn’t believe the live recording was actually her, so for the release they brought her in to record a “messier” version, which is what we’re hearing. She’s THAT talented.
Omg like I know a lot of people really hate this movie and I get some of the jokes are a bit dated (but some of it is CLEARLY parody) but I freaking love this movie! "That's right Ant or Dec" kills me every time. Liam Neeson's whole story is gorgeous. Emma Thompson is a queen. "Apparently he's going to kill Aurelia" "cool!"..Martin Freeman headbutting a boob....what's not to love 😂
Thanks for not going overboard about the flash card scene with Andrew Lincoln. It's supposed to be inappropriate, but he has to do something after he couldn't face her in his flat when she realised what he'd been hiding from her. People do fall in love with people they shouldn't fall in love with; dishonourable people try to turn it into an affair; honourable people say things like 'Look, I don't have a hidden agenda here, but I've fallen in love with you - but your husband is my best friend - so if I seem to be acting strangely, you'll know why.'
One of my top Christmas movies. The speech in the cafe is absolutely tear jerking. Definitely watch The Muppet Christmas Carol. We sing along every year.
Please PLEASE watch the sequel. It’s only like 20 minutes it’s called Red Nose Day actually and was made for charity and has the same cast set years later
I loved this watchalong with you, you added so much to it. Richard Curtis has made it his life's work to fully write about love and they're wonderful flicks. Four Weddings & A Funeral, Notting Hill, About Time would be awesome additions to your viewing channel. And speaking of yer love of Bill Nighy and The Decoy Bride... he and Kelly Macdonald are the two protagonist's in Curtis's rom-dram, The Girl In The Cafe (and she won an Emmy for it).
10:09 You saying "It's a story that just decided it has a happy ending" is exactly what it was. that was such perfect commentary, because both the book and the relationship probably did from that moment. EDIT: I also love how Love Actually shows all kinds of love: it has a focus on various types of romantic love, but there's also the love of being an idiot who travels out of the country just to have sex, there's the love of finding comfort from seeing your brother unexpectedly right after your heart was broken, there's the greedy kind of love that seduces someone to cheat, there's the love of staying home with your manager instead of going to the wild parties, there's the grief of having lost the love of your life, there's the joy of celebrating having found the love of your life, there's loving your friend enough to say "this is enough" when you notice you are getting dangerously close to his wife. So many sides of human experience are shown, and this film connects it all to Love.
I’ll admit I’m shocked you’ve never seen this one! 😅 it’s been 20 years and I’m still not over Alan Rickman buying his wife a poxy CD after gifting his mistress or fling whatever you want to call her, a £270 necklace?! Like the cheating was bad enough but that was just an extra slap in the face!
I love that you still found a small, tiny silver lining with the whole “I mean at least he listened to her when she talked about how much she loves that artist!” 😅
One last little note from me, if you can look up the deleted scenes because there was a whole extra story with two other characters that were completely removed from the film and I wish they were kept in and Colin the sex pest was the one who got his story cut!
The scene when Emma Thompson confronts him was not in the script but Alan Rickman pointed out the storyline doesn't work without a talk properly hence... Love Alan and Emma working together, they were close friends in real life and their chemistry on screen matches that, wish they had the chance to make more together.
America where nudity sexual or not will bump your rating and anything vaguely sexual (unless its something blatent but "hidden" in a kids movie) will bump it furthed. Between the set scenes for John and Judy's storyline plus the gallery art there was no way it wasnt getting an R here
Couple of music related facts about this movie: - Richard Curtis has stated that the 'Christmas is All Around' cover was so that he had an excuse to put 'Love is All Around' in a *third* movie (just to *really* make sure people were sick of it!) - The girl who played Joanna had to *tone down* her singing - she was so good that they thought it wouldn't be believable
I remember this movie as the first time I saw Rodrigo Santoro speak in a north american movie hehehe but I was happy to see a fellow brazilian showing up in movies
You should TOTALLY watch Valentines Day if you haven’t already. It is a similar concept where there’s a ton of different storylines that weave together and it’s a star studded cast. It’s my favorite out of these kinda of romcoms. There’s also New Years Eve or Day I’m not sure which it is which also follows a similar structure. However I think that one’s the worst. Love Actually is the most iconic one, but I think Valentines Fay takes the formula and perfects it imo
I've never really thought about young Ant looking like Andrew Scott but I see it 🤣🤣. Ant and Dec are a real presenter double act here in the UK they're crazy famous and still going strong. I adore them. The joke is people often mix them up. Though they have done a little bit of acting too.
Always loved this and I wish more North Americans would venture across the Atlantic for cinematic adventures like you. For someone who is sick, your brightness and vivacity shine through like Rudolph on that foggy night. You know all the actors and are right on to the various plot lines. Very well done ma'am. Personally, I would treasure the Joni Mitchell CD more than the gold necklace but that's just me. What tour-de-force from Emma Thompson. At least Rickman's character comes clean at the end. RIP Alan.
Yeah, the Joni Mitchell gift alone is the I know what you like gift, but the necklace would have been the I know deep down what you would love from me gift that was a fail cause he got it for the affair side-piece you should never have in the first place. Which ends up saying I know what you like but I don't care anymore, but I'm gonna throw you a bone. That cuts sooooo deep...
Merry Christmas, Jess! Thanks for a year of amazing videos! The rollercoaster ride on the love train during this reaction was quite a sight. Glad you enjoyed!
One of my favourite films, so glad you liked it! Almost all of the storylines are connected by one or two degrees of seperation sometimes quite sublte (ie. Mia is friends with Mark which is why Harry can have his office party at that gallery.)
2:376:00 Not Jess having no idea who Hugh Grant is and disrespecting him like that! girl have you never seen Paddington 2?! we also gotta have you watch more Richard Curtis romcoms someday: Four Weddings and a Funeral, Notting Hill, Bridget Jones' Diary - you'll see the Hugh vision!
one of the two films that are always shown on television in December: this one and Home Alone. the difference is that people watch this one in its entirety, no matter which time, and from the second film they often watch the last 20 minutes... 😊
My mom makes me watch all these classic Christmas films when I come over, and this is one of them. I know every scene by heart to the point where I’m honest to god sick of this movie. I was genuinely considering not watching this cause I despise it so much, but I decided to do so purely because it’s you, one of my favorite reactors, reacting to it. You’re definitely gonna make this tolerable (also helps that it’s only 20 minutes 😂) Edit: absolutely loved the video ❤️
Ok so I haven’t watched this yet, but I just have to say it’s _wild_ that the notification popped up barely 2 minutes after I was thinking about how I haven’t watched this yet this year and I should do that
You should also check out "Four Weddings and a Funeral", if you haven't already seen it. It's also written by Richard Curtis (years before he also wrote "Notting Hill"), who wrote and directed this movie, and is also very funny and romantic, and actually features queer characters
I can't believe the first time I watched this movie I didn't care much for it. I adore it now. Also, portuguese actress Lúcia Moniz, represent! I love her storyline with Colin Firth so much ❤

Rowan Atkinson, the gift wrapper, stars in another Christmas special, Black Adder's Christmas Carol. Another British Christmas movie you may want to watch is The Lion in Winter (1968), which is a historical drama about a family Christmas get together for the royal family of England in the twelth century.
I love this movie and I don't care that there's sort of a backlash against it these days. It's a rom-com, nothing to be taken too seriously, just a fun cheesy holiday movie.

the fact that thomas brodie sangster and kiera knightly were only five years apart in age in real life while filming baffles me to no extent
Cat has never aged, he just gets taller. At about 90 he'll get hit with wrinkles.
Keira just started looking 22 at 16 and stayed looking 22 for a decade + change
Does it also baffle you that his cousin is Hugh Grant? That's actually true.
Richard Curtis has said that he regrets the fat-shaming and that he cut out the plotline about the school headmistress's sapphic romance. The film does have issues, but it's extremely sentimental and that's what matters at Christmas. 🙂

He was intended to be a literal angel in early drafts of the script, but that idea was dropped.
He actually was, they filmed the scenes but they cut them out.

The phone call was such a mood 😭😭
The reason the lives intertwined is because those are all of the people who can afford to own property in London
The bit with the Titanic scene it was implied that Sam watched it with his mom.
Though I think it was in there as way to get the lead cast of Sense and Sensibility ( 1995) in there.
I love this movie but a large part of that might be growing up watching it with my mum every Christmas
Those two little kids grow up to do voices in Phineas and Ferb, where they voice Ferb and Vanessa, who also end up together in the end.

Love Alan and Emma working together, they were close friends in real life and their chemistry on screen matches that, wish they had the chance to make more together.
The widowed stepfather - orphaned stepson (Liam Neeson & Thomas Brodie-Sangster) dynamic imight be the purest form of love depicted in the story.
One of the things I love most about this movie is that is shows being a stepparent is being a parent.

Knowing Keira Knightley was 18 (only 5 years older than the Game of Thrones kid) in this is cursed knowledge I wish I could forget
If this is the most packed cast you ever seen then you definitely never seen valentines day
I hate that Kiera Knightleys character kisses him after that creepy declaration. Colin firth story is my favourite 😂
It was Claudia Schiffer, stated earlier in the movie as the woman he should marry after his wife or however it was put.
I've never seen Michael Sheen's Tony Blair movie that would be quite interesting 😅 I was quite young through most of his years
That's the first thing I saw him in, so seeing his true range over the years has been a fun experience.
I love this movie and I don't care that there's sort of a backlash against it these days. It's a rom-com, nothing to be taken too seriously, just a fun cheesy holiday movie.
Yeah, I never understood the backlash. It's a movie about many different kinds of love, the good and bad. The "problematic" aspects are part of the point. Love can be really messy. Depiction isn't endorsement.
Yeah the backlash is kinda weird and exaggerated. One of my fave Christmas movies ever
Just watched this two days ago and I was so confused but I loved it :)
Hi Jess , Merry Christmas 🎄🎁🎅🏽🍪🥛☃️☃️☃️
Great review! I definitely know the stressed and depressed in Florida life though. 😂
"Why is this white part so big?"
Michael Scott: .......
I love this film
This is succh a swet movie. 😊 Thanks for sharing it!
omg im actually watching this movie rn, I'll finish the movie and watch the video later❤❤
Hope you are have an merry Christmas 🎅
But do you believe in life after love?
I know the Hugh Grant plotline has aged a bit poorly but I think in general it’s actually handled fairly well.
He’s attracted to an employee but doesn’t do anything about I’d despite her clearly reciprocate it and only makes a move after she no longer works directly under him.
Saffron Bacchus? Is that you?
"Snape's wife" played Trelawney. :) Happy Christmas!
I had both of my kids in the early 2000's. I was an actress living in L.A. It was AWFUL!
It's better now. 😊
I was in London in December 2015. It was amazing!
BTW, I hope you're feeling better. I'm sending Virtual Mom Vibes. ™️
I absolutely detest the Beach Boys. But the end of this movie always gets me
I almost forget Qui-Gon Jinn was in an romcom.
"Snape's wife" 🤣
This is basically the British version of the movie Valentine’s Day but done so much better!!
This is what inspired all those other "Holiday Romance" movies like Valentines Day and New Years Eve and stuff
This is why you should use a laptop instead of a typewriter.
Was this a costume party? I don't think it was.
Snape's wife is Professor Trelawney.😂
Did you notice Rick from the Walking Dead?
Another good movie for Christmas is "Tokyo Godfathers" from the late Satoshi Kon.
The Great _American_ Novel?
This is the alternate universe where prof. Snape and prof. Trellawny are muggles 😂 i love this movie i watch it every year 😊
