Kingah Repporio It was a colourful watered down Tortuga. I miss that game too, had a triple set of Tortuga, Port Royale 2 and Patrician 3 that I played the shit out of. Tortuga was more in depth and had more trading emphasis - but I still enjoyed Pirates! Loved the ship battles.
Welp... Time to re-install, crack open the 150 page game manual with handy ship stats, and see if after my many, many playthroughs throughout the years, I can actually find a damned ship-of-the-line!
Got it again on Steam today. It's just as good as I remember it, although the dancing is harder, a lot harder. I'm already a Baron for the Dutch, I've taken taken out Baron Raymondo once, and I'm getting cosey with the Governor of Curacao's daughter.
17:08 Sips:"Is that the Stede bonnet?" French Coastal Barque:"OH SHIT! Pirates! Quick! activate the phasing device! They'll never be able to follow us through this island!" *Phases through the land*
There's a reason why, ever since the original version of the game, I've always had a playable version of it, on some working system, at all times. Nowadays, I always have both a home and portable version of the game. It was my first ever sandbox-style game, and Sid Meier was always known for his simulations. What made Pirates! So special was how the game was running an entire simulation of trade, economy, and ship routes laced with random events across the entire Carribean. Various town stats and status were based on how the simulation ran. Random events caused changes to help ensure it was never the same game twice. And these events are also what can causes changes to the value of goods, for any location. That is where you come in. You are effectively the Pebble in the lake. You became that X factor which caused ripples in the simulation, to effectively change the results of the simulation as it chugged along. Far more than just the Random events. I always felt like my actions would cause various futures of the simulation to branch off in different paths compared to what would happen if I did nothing. Some big, some small, all based on how ambitious my plan was. And some devious, long-planned ideas actually work in this game. Like staging embargoes around a town to ruin it's economy and defenses before attacking it, in attempts to change its nationality with a new Mayor.
I used to play this game with my dad on the genesis when i was a little kid and i remember it being so incredibly vast and cool to me. There were more towns than I could count, adventure of all kinds everywhere, it was amazing. And when I got older I played the newer one with my dad and we both 100% completed 126 fame on swashbuckler. It's such a genuine, true experience playing this game, the music is cheerful, the graphics hold up great, the replayability is off the charts, and it's one of my fondest memories of my childhood gaming next to the original sonic genesis titles, star wars knights of the old republic, battlefront and pokemon of course
I still have the disk of this game, have it on steam too, and it's one of my all time favorites! I've beaten the game countless times (and I'm actually really fucking good at it). I would love to watch a series on it, even if Sips is little rusty.
This is amazing. I had always heard about it but never had the want to play it. I noticed it is a lot like the Mount and Blade series with the map, the city menu, the factions. Been looking at the Steam screen for a while now. Sips please play more.
One of the many things I love about Evening with Sips is watching him play a game he is extremely passionate about and seeing it reflected in his hilarious commentary.
Oh my god, you know it's going to be good when Sips is just freaking out already when naming his character X'D "We don't have shoes, so we can have a girls name, that's fine"
sips this is so godang fantastic! i never played the game before so i dont have nostalgia clouding my judgement but this seems to genuinly rock. please keep it coming big boy
Play more please! I remember this game as a kid and I lost my copy, so I'd love to get all the nostalgia and be interested in another series of yours again. Please Sips!!!
Love to see more of this series. I may not have played it when it was new but somehow it still manages to make me feel nostalgia, not to mention the fact the most magnificent bastard is playing it.
i would love to see a series of this and see the adventures of alandin as he sails the Caribbean saving his family defeating pirates and digging up treasure
Hey sips it's your good friend Hank, just wanted to say that if you didn't make this into a series it would be asinine. Also we're having a sale on propane and propane accessories.
Sid Meier includes his name in the titles of his games because when he made his first civ game it was a hit, and he wanted to make other stuff but was afraid no one would buy them. So by adding his name it was his way to tell buyers who made the game.
I saw that Pirates was on steam and out of sheer nostalgia from watching my dad play it, I bought it instantly. Now I'm hoping it's good by watching this so I don't end up regretting my impulsiveness
This was one of the games I poured hundreds of hours into as a kid, true nostalgia bomb seeing you play it sips! Would love to see a full series, and would be good background game for Ramblin'.
I remember getting a disk copy of the '05 copyright when it first came out as a Christmas gift. Needless to say I spent the next few months playing it over and over again. It's such an amazing game. No two play-throughs are ever the same. I actually have it on my desk right now and have been inspired to boot it back up again. I think a full play-through of this could be very entertaining.
I was a sailor I was born upon the tide And with the sea I did abide I sailed a schooner round the Horn to Mexico I went aloft and furled the mainsail in a blow And when the yards broke off they said that I got killed But I am living still
It'd be nice to see more of this. It feels like we've only scratched the surface. I'm curious to see how combat will be different with multiple ships in your fleet.
This is now a series. I declare it be a series.
TristanBomb And so it was that the great Alandins journey began

22:55 I'm suprised there's boob 'physics' in a game this old.
TheOdd101 Yeah even Dragon Age Inquisition isn't that advanced!
MrKrolme Too hard for Assassin's Creed Unity too
TheOdd101 Dead or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball.
TheOdd101 Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance was in 2001 and has some of the BEST boob physics of any game ever.
TheOdd101 Wow I didn't notice. either you're a perv or I'm blind.
Please do more sips!

***** Wow, I never expected anyone to get it.
NCR Vet Pretty much everyone knows Monty Python, so it's not really an obscure reference.
joost1120 I didn't even know it was from Monty Python, and yet I've heard the joke quoted so many times I got it.
Loved playing this when I was younger along with Star War BattleFront 1 and 2, Original Call of Duty and Battlefield 1942, Vietnam.
I remember getting a disk copy of the '05 copyright when it first came out as a Christmas gift. Needless to say I spent the next few months playing it over and over again. It's such an amazing game.
