Underrated? It was a pretty mediocre game. It may be underrated because virtually no one has heard of it, and it's better than ... that. I got it when it came out. It was a Wipeout clone with SSX style tricks thrown in. The soundtrack was solid, but very much like Wipeout. The track design was ... interesting. The gravity defying tracks were interesting. But, unless you played enough to memorize each track you were flying blind with no real visual cues to work with (which is critical racing). The game wasn't especially challenging, aside from the weird but interesting track design, and I don't recall needing to memorize the tracks. I played for a handful of hours and enjoyed it but definitely didn't beat it. The song that played on the title screen was a pretty big hit at the time (If I Survive by Hybrid). The problem with this being Wipeout + SSX is that both of those games were better. Wipeout was a cultural touchstone in PS1 gaming in about 1995 when it came out (5-6 years earlier). It was so popular it was used in the movie Hackers (one of Angelina Jolie's first movies ... this was the game they played in the insanely unrealistic high school hangout/nightclub). It was also so popular they sold the soundtrack to the game. The soundtrack itself was so popular they made a sequel to the soundtrack ... not a soundtrack to a different game. Just another music album with Wipeout branding. And then there's SSX. When the PS2 came out the only 2 games worth owning were SSX and Starfighter, and SSX was an original game that spawned a very popular series with SSX Tricky being one of the best games of that generation of gaming. This game was very much on par with Hypersonic Xtreme on PS2 (fine and inoffensive). Even 20 years ago when these games were fairly new most people had never heard of or played either of these two games.
I bought this game on sale back in the early 2000s. It turned out to be one of my most favorite games on the ps2. My girlfriend and I would play this for hours!
E3 2001 had so many bangers, both classics and underrated gems. Got to take a look at the entire PS2 showcase on a Playstation Underground demo disc, along with some demos. So many underrated BANGERS that year. Soul Reaver 2, Klonoa 2, Kinetica, Okage: Shadow King, Ico, etc. Had to grab Kinetica as soon as it came out. Suffered a lot trying to unlock all 3 secret characters but I finally did it. Amazing game, wish it got more love.
I love this game so much it became part of my identity growing up. The OST launched a whole personal phase of discovery in terms of the music genre. Such a beautiful game. The story the characters. The levels. The dynamics. I completed the game to 99% because I loved it so much. Thank you Santa Monica Studios. 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽😌
One of the most unique racers I've played and I don't play them much. I remember my cousin in PR showing me this game and I was wowed. Been rediscovering it since
It was a Wipeout clone with SSX elements. Wipeout was from about 5-6 years earlier. SSX was a PS2 launch title. I couldn't get anyone to want to play it for more than an hour or two. It was similar to Hypersonic Xtreme. A futuristic racing game that didn't really go anywhere.
I still have this game. It had a great deal of potential to being one of the greatest futuristic racers out there, next to the Extreme G titles, if only the devs spent more time hand crafting the maps better than what was included in the game. They didn't craft them to be used with every character in the selection menu, efficiently. If you wanted to beat the game, you'd have to choose between 3 different characters while the rest were only good for a few maps but horrible for other maps, despite high skill control of them. This was due to the nature of how acrobats were important to execute as much as possible, in order to have enough boost to help you stay on the map (avoiding skidding, which could cost you placement in a race). The paths at times were way too narrow and turns too small with blockades that were hard to read, due to the visual styling and colors. The game looked great, don't get me wrong, but some of it's questionable map layout choices, hurt it's longevity, imho. Kinetica had a remarkable idea behind it. Very unique and I loved playing it, but only with like two characters. I would love to see this be remade today, but only if passion is involved. The cover art was the best and the tunes were very nice.
Really glad they ditched the twin stick throttle controls, trading steering for tricks was already plenty to get used to. Such a fun game, hope it gets a sequel
I first saw this game advertised in an Electronic Gaming Monthly magazine back in the 90s. I used to draw these type of characters with exoskeleton suits like these with wheels 🛞 and sleek. It took me forever to figure out what game it was and alas here I am.
It is, only downside is that it can be pretty tough, but as an F-Zero vet, I’m used to it. The soundtrack is also one of the grooviest on the PS2. I listen to it all the time when starting a rave in VRChat. Not bad for the first game from Santa Monica Studio, no joke, this was the first game they made. The original God of War even ran on Kinetica’s engine You can get it on PS4 and PS5 for about $15.
@@thejman5683 It is a challenge, and I really appreciate it. It doesn't hold your hand, it's intense and it lives up to it. The physics are quite good, especially for that early on. Even the graphics are impressive for 2001. The soundtrack is absolutely bitching. Every aspect is dripping with style, it's so over-the-top. I also get some Battle Angel Alita Motorball vibes from it, which isn't something I really see at all.
with the possibility for such a diverse cast of characters that actually show character rather than a faceless person in a car, this begs for a reboot or sequel.
This game looks similar to Nintendo’s Mario Kart, Activision’s Crash Team Racing, and SEGA’s Team Sonic Racing. It uses “Kinetica Engine” for other projects including, Jak and Daxter, Ratchet and Clank and God of War
On Ground: LRL, RLR, Sweep Left, Sweep Right In Air: UDU, DUD, Circle Right, Circle Left You aren·t supposed to take Dusk·s turns head on , her Grip is low so yu have to save a bit of boost at all times in order to reset the angle around sharp corners . Kinetica was honestly one of the best video games i·ve ever played .
I think what this game did different to subvert the “sex-sells” stereotype, is that, while yes, you do have all the women drivers asses hanging out, the game did break the mold, and had good control and design. There’s a difference in games where fan service is the only point vs. a good game with aesthetics.
We deserve a sequel on ps5 underrated gem 💎
So so SO long overdue. 🤘😎

The first God of War game was based of kinetica's engine, which was Santa Monica's first game.
Wish they made a sequel I love this game
This game was the catalyst for me getting into electronic music. So happy they have it on PS+
Same
I swear man Dev's during the PS2 Era were encouraged to think outside the box, this game and SSX3 one of my favorite futuristic racers of that era.
The setting and the concept is so interesting to me and I'm surprised I've never heard of this until now.
20th Anniversary of Kinetica (2001-2021)
Been a long time since I've played this.... Hearing David Jaffe talk about it was amusing

By any chance do you know what the music genre is?

Really? I thought the maps were ludicrously awesome, particularly in the visual aspect. I get where you're coming from though.
I still have my original copy of this game. I never got far, the controls were a bit tough to get a handle on
This game was my childhood. The OST is awesome too! 😊
This is such an amazing concept and i don't know why it hasn't had a bigger impact. This needs a remaster and then an expansion or new game.
It was a Wipeout clone mixed with SSX. Wipeout was from about 6 years earlier and SSX was a PS2 launch title.
0:46 Oh my god. That is a really young Shannon Studstill. I did not realize she had been with Santa Monica Studios this long.
1:09 is that what i think it is? 🤓 😱
@@Fuzzy-Beans “the most interesting thing about Kinetica..” 😅
If anyone wants to know the song here it’s Energy Flow - Vitae
This game was horrifying but as a kid I just couldn’t stop playing. It’s so intriguing… wish it got a sequel.
I love that Dist is the first track!!! Instantly recognized it because the soundtrack was so damn good!
This IP has so much untapped potential.
Really glad they ditched the twin stick throttle controls, trading steering for tricks was already plenty to get used to. Such a fun game, hope it gets a sequel
Im still playing it on PS5 its in the catalog
Underrated game

I remember watching this video on the demo that you would get when you subscribed to game informer. I was 9 years old
00:39 SHANNON STUDSTILL the legend!!!! so cool seeing her here!!!
this game was so good. seriously slept on
Never heard of this but looks interesting
Babes on blades! SSX in the future
damn this game actually looks very fun :)

I want to play this again; it just felt different. Also, one banger of a soundtrack.

How have I never heard of this, uhhh, classic!?
Also, a lot of familiar faces from the God of War games.
I remember playing this game as a kid. I used to think they stabbed the wheels through their hands in a painful scientific experiment.
I played the heck out of this game! My go-to racer was Zinon. She could turn real well. Haha!
Omg i feel old now smh.
Never heard of this.
gonna have to try it out.
Still have this on PS2.
(And had to download onto PS5 for my out-of-the-blue fix) 😆👍

Kinetica is still one of the craziest worlds I've ever seen. And one of the sexiest ?

I can’t be the only one here that has aps2 disc that had this, nba street and a few other games on it!
Santa Monica developed this game, should bring Kiniteka to PS5 , with Kratos racing in one of those machinations , 😅😅😅
10k poly bikes, i'd love some rips of the racers to make into VR avatars. They're the right size for it
“Open your eyes for gravity deΦing action…”
WE NEED A REMASTER OR A REMAKE OF KINETICA 🙏🏽
Man, they don't make 'em like this anymore
Kinetica was the best racing game I ever played. Why no PS5 version?!?!!?
We need partition for this foreal, Its crazy to not have a remake
@06DarKKlowN06 I'd rather not have a remake, it was a perfect simple start as this was legit a experiment from SM.
Hmm yes interesting ass yes nice gameplay. Pure PS2 kino. 1:03 early 2000s gaming was in a world of its own haha
Sera was my favorite.
Love this game as a kid of the real producers see this make a re boot please 🎉
I wished they've made a sequel
Remake when? I buy ps5 just for this.

The concept art seems really……..sexy lol. I see what they were going for.
This game was so cool, but had awful control and animations for even back in the day.
When games were made to have fun ❤️
Who came up with the badass character models? They were so cool lol my girlfriend and i loved the thong bottoms
