  • Crews opened a second temporary channel on Tuesday allowing a limited amount of marine traffic to bypass the wreckage of Baltimore's collapsed Francis Scott Key Bridge, which had blocked the vital port's main shipping channel since its destruction one week ago. Work is ongoing to open a third channel that will allow larger vessels to pass through the bottleneck, officials announced at a news conference Tuesday afternoon. The channels are primarily open primarily to vessels that are helping with the cleanup effort, along with some barges and tugs that have been stuck in the Port of Baltimore. A tugboat pushing a fuel barge was the first vessel to use an alternate channel late Monday. It was supplying jet fuel to Delaware's Dover Air Force Base. www.wbaltv.com/article/tempora...

This will be a five year project and for most of that time, the port will be closed. There is a mile of six lane highway dumped onto the channel which will have to be removed by divers. You can't dredge steel and concrete and there are still gas pipes under that too. Apart from the visible steel trusses that collapsed, Most of the debris is under the water. A few shallow displacement barges are all that will be able to get through. To allow big ships, the new bridge will have to be higher than the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

The risk or fear of continued cutting and it slipping to the bottom of the ocean can be very dangerous. While we're all sure the Army Corp of engineers will get the bay open, and updates are welcome.
However, the governor should be focused on bridge replacement: determine if there's safer ways to design bridges so that even when a ship loses power, it cannot hit the bridge. Start the RFP process to get some initial designs from leading architecture/design firms. What are the design criteria Maryland should be using the bridge? All the 1,000 questions MDOT should ask of design/build firms should be collated right now. Each of these steps can take months.
The Governor cannot fix the accident, he's a bystander like the rest of us. But getting through these preliminary steps in parallel with with the investigation and bridge/ship cleanup can shave a year from a replacement timeline.

Of course - but you can't give daily updates on something that will take years.
The Governor is explaining to the public the steps that are being taken to address the problem at hand and the various government agencies that are involved and the expertise of each group.
You can't write an RFP for a bridge overnight. And it isn't one RFP for a bridge - its multiple RFPs - for bridge design, engineering, construction, access roads, etc.
You are absolutely right when you said there are 1000s of things that need to be taken into consideration. And that's why it will take time.
Rest assured - people are working on the replacement right now and studies are underway. But those will take a long time. and require the involvement of everyone - Federal, state and local.
In the meantime, the Governor is doing a very good job explaining the problems and how they are being solved.
Be patient. There are people who know a whole lot more than you and me about engineering and cargo ships who will spend a good part of the next decade on building a better bridge.

The key to the crash lies in the ship veering to the right towards the pillar as it was approaching the Bridge, even after emergency power was restored to the steering
The cause being due to astern propulsion on the engines after emergency power was restored,, for the reason of the black smoke from the funnel, coupled with dropping the anchor, in order to stop the ships momentum, The two crucial mistakes that caused the crash,
It should have been noted that the heading of the vessel depends on the momentum which was at 8 knots & not on the propulsion, moreover head or stern thrust would have no effect on a ship makiing a 8 knots , other than Canting the head to the right towards the Bridge pillar
The truth of the crash may never come out lest Insurance/Compensation be denied for the Pilots/officals erranous actions when faced with an emergency situation, changing the focus from safe navigation to saving the Bridge, only ending up crashing into the pillar of the Bridge,

Install red traffic lights flashing on new Bridge when ships are approaching so cars are stopped before crossing out on Bridge & the road crews can get off the Bridge in time.
No Guranntee ships could do this again with new Bridge

Move something off the Dali, ANYTHING, even a small piece. So far looks like a bunch of big cranes PARKED 24/7. Instead of calling this an UPDATE, call it an update of latest excuses.

We’ve already diverted from the plan. The first course of action was to clear the shipping channel. However, we’ve opened a temporary SMALL channel, and now a second temporary SMALL channel. Here we go, back to the norm for state workers. They had the right plan, they said the right things, and now we’re going right back to bureaucracy. Just you watch as more and more side projects get completed before the shipping channel.

Suggestion; Get some tugs on the ship and cut away the section on top 1st! Drag the remaining section of bridge underwater either on land or out to sea! Replace the bridge with bumpers. sandbars and other reinforcement around supports and build the new bridge in sections so that the loss of one section doesn't cause the entire bridge to collapse!

The event has strayed into an area where its now defined as a collapse with straw men heros. The truth is, its an allision thats going to result in a cost of 2 billion dollars and a 3-5 year construction project.
