This vid melts my face as well. I've never heard anything like this from a jazz guitarist. I'm not a big fan of Kurt's music but there are a few of his videos like this that are amazing and musical. In AWE!
I remember hearing Kurt in 1989 at Wallys in Boston, it great to see how he's become such a monster of jazz guitar, damn. Even in 1990 he was already playing with Gary Burton, who announced how proud he was to have him in the band. That's some high praise for a kid from philly.. wow what an improviser. He's a scientist.
Kurt's done some work. Damn. Some of my favorite recordings are actually with Rebecca Martin. On her newest release he plays keys like a beast too! It's not fair.
Pretty sure he's using a Polytone here. I've seen him frequently using the Fender Jazz King and playing out of Twin Reverbs. I think he usually just uses what the venue has when he's traveling though (not sure). Hope that helps.
that doesn't mean he sounds like him, that does not sound anything like Holdsworth, he is using stock chord voicings (1,3,5,7), he is not using legato technique at all, look at his picking hand.
The guy didn't say he sounded exactly like Holdsworth. If you can recognize chord shapes then I'm sure you can understand that part of being a musician, especially in the jazz idiom, is to transcribe lines from the players you enjoy. You do that to develop language and even if you don't rip someone off wholesale a lot of their harmonic vocabulary gets integrated into your own. When I first heard Rosenwinkel play his improv had elements that sounded vaguely familiar to me and after I heard Rosenwinkel talk about his love of Holdsworth a lot of his outside resolutions and single line structure suddenly sounded Holdsworthian to me. Here's an article where he speaks about Holdsworth's harmonic language in depth, implying that it's something he's studied and is deeply familiar with: jazztimes.com/features/kurt-rosenwinkel-going-deep/
I am so glad that I lived to hear Kurt Rosenwinkel play the guitar.
after all these years this is still one of the most insane videos I've ever seen!!
Kurt is so amazing.
He is improvising more then 15 min!!
Nonstop! What a player!!

I would say a polytone, as far as I know kurt generally rolls with a poly over a henrik, or just standard twin back line stuff

is it me, or he sounds a lot like allan holdsworth.
its you, that does not sound anything like holdsworth
It's not you, Kurt has said in multiple interviews that Holdsworth was a significant influence for him.
that doesn't mean he sounds like him, that does not sound anything like Holdsworth, he is using stock chord voicings (1,3,5,7), he is not using legato technique at all, look at his picking hand.
