    I have one remark about the opinions expressed in the video: you keep talking about the lack of a role model, and it is true that it would change a lot. However, the player that would come out is guaranteed to have his career and personal life mixed forever, always being known as "the gay player", unless he already has a great pedigree.
    Plus, even though that person would receive a lot of support, he would also receive a lot of abuse. Most people wouldn't willingly throw themselves in such a shitstorm, and we can't expect them to do so.
    Anyway, great piece guys, this One on One series is probably the best of football daily.

      Hi! While it is true that Justin Fashanu had a sexual relationship with an underage guy, and that's definitely a bad thing, it is worth noting that the guy he had a sex with (according to a quick Google search) would have been old enough to have 'straight' sex. The age of consent for gay sex used to be 21 "to protect the youth against homosexuality." I'm not condoning it, but the unequal age of consent does put the case in perspective.

    I agree with most of these points, but I don't think that clarifying your sexual preference is homophobia. If a player is asked if they are homosexual and they say they are not, I struggle to see how that is anti-gay. If a gay person was misrepresented as straight, they would want to clarify as well. So I don't see how Zlatan, Batshuayi, and Loftus-Cheek making this clear is problematic.
    Thanks for the video though. These One on One videos are great.

    The reasons that there are few homosexuals in football isn’t necessarily all to do with the reasons discussed in the video. I’m not saying that there is no discrimination because there is, but I know a few gay people. 3 people in my school that I know well enough, and my own brother are a few examples, and none of them like football-some can barely tolerate it. So maybe it’s not that they are scared to come out, maybe it’s just that there are much fewer than 6% of the population that are gay, like football, and are good enough to become professional.

    In my opinion i think it’s mad that this is still an issue. If someone close to me told me they was gay then I would have no problem with it as it’s pretty much the same as me going to them and saying I’m straight. It’s a sexual preference and not a subject that requires opinions. Racism and homophobia are two very dated mindsets and I hope that we can soon get over this ridiculous prejudice and start moving forward in the things that actually matter.

    As a gay football fan I don't think that's the case at all, I've never personally experienced any homophobia in football, and I've hardly seen any either. Yes it does happen and it's awful but I've experienced far worse walking down the street than at any football related event, in fact the majority of homophobia I see is from older people, religious people, or people you might fit under the term chavs, which are mostly groups who are not largely fans of football. Yes it happens, but to say it's "ruining football" is extreme, it has very little effect on the game even for me as a gay fan, let alone on the whole.

    My guess is players don't wanna come out coz they want to be judged on their talents not their sexuality so I agree there should be a climate were there is no need to clarify and comment upon in publicly because it just doesn't matter

      except all footballers are asked about wives and girlfriends... so why cant that be husbands and boyfriends for the gay athletes... simply knowing someone is gay, won't preclude you from simply judging someone on their talents. we don't say "oh he's a great player because he's straight'

    Great video, this is a huge issue in football. Last pride day Chelsea changed their photo to the club's logo with the pride theme and 90% of the comments were vile and full of hate. I was curious to see if it was just Chelsea fans so I had a look at a few other clubs that had changed theirs to the pride theme and it was pretty much exactly the same.

    • @samgoz2898
      @samgoz2898 5 лет назад

      Adam Ellis It was like this with every major club that did it, I had a look around too, but i noticed it was mostly foreign fans that had problems with it, I even saw one Liverpool fan comment on their post that he was disgusted they supported LGBT+ and that he was now a Chelsea fan...only for them to have posted a picture with an LGBT+ flag also.
      The last few months have brought so much attention to the media about discrimination in football that hopefully it now kicks on and it starts to get removed from football, however sadly, society as a whole is the real cause as people are brought up with these views, hard to change football alone, society needs to as well

    Such good words mate! Personally what I think what would be need to be done for things to change would be for even just one person who is a world class player to come out. This would mean that it would teach other players it’s okay and even someone who is that high profile can be like that. It happened in the women’s game when Casey Stoney came out, so many other female footballers came out.

  • @tdyerwestfield

    Clubs, the FA and the Premier League have stopped players announcing their homosexuality. A high profile Premier League player wanted to reveal their homosexuality and become a role model for LGBTQ+ people at the end of 2017, but was blocked from doing so by the FA for the player's safety. The worst thing about football is the fans.
