Woodworking | 3 Reasons to Hate Maple
Maple lumber is dense, fine grained and beautiful to look at. However, it also presents a few challenges for sawmills, woodworkers and lumber buyers, alike.
Do I hate Maple wood? Not really...but for the purposes of this video, I'play devil's advocate and present 3 reasons why you should hate maple. Feel free to disagree (comment or I''ll assume you agree! with all my points)
Specifically, the particular specie of maple we're looking at in the video is Hard Maple, otherwise known as Sugar Maple or Rock Maple.
I don't want to spoil the video by revealing the three arguments here in the description but they all involve the fickle nature of its precious sapwood. Yikes... I may have said too much. It's a short video - give it a watch!
As a bonus teaser....even the esteemed Professor Gene Wengert (AKA the Wood Doctor) and the National Hardwood Lumber Association (NHLA) gets hit with some shrapnel in this 4 minute maple video. IS NOTHING SACRED? 😝
The scientific name is Acer saccharum. This maple grows in the Northeast region of North America. It's a dense wood, commonly used in flooring, millwork, basketball courts, guitar necks. The grain is fine. We sell both plain-sawn and quartersawn maple lumber.

Stunning Misadventures I guess the reality is everyone should know CPR! When I was making this video I had a flashback to a literature professor in college who insisted on being addressed as Doctor 👩⚕️at all times 🙄
So sorry for the maple. I dont like maple too. But the color of it when it fall look really nice

Clever opening Steve 😁 My homage ... I don't remember the last time I wanted to hide the natural beauty of maple. I prefer a more natural look; although lately I have been using various colored shellacs. GAAK ... that shot of the quartersawns really got my pulse going 😵 -Mike

If it's bright white colors you're after, maple is your wood!
Too hot here to grow maple. I inlaid a cheese board with Tugas (Molave) on a video. But is more yellow than white

Hard maple is considered as the king of the "Acer genus". It is stronger, stiffer and denser than the others.

G’day mate, what’s Maple 😳😮🧐🧐🧐never seen it here but a difficult timber I’ve worked with is English Elm, like machining fatty steak lol
Sumo's Projects that’s an interesting question. I’ve never had to describe maple before… many electric guitar necks, pool cues, basketball court floors & bowling 🎳 alley floors are made from maple 🍁.
Its heartwood is brown, sapwood is white.Same grain as alder, Birch, cherry, poplar.
Commercial Forest We here about it all the time but it’s not a species we can get hold of however we have similar types here from the eucalyptus varieties 👍👍👍

Especially kiln dried! You should see some of the stuff that goes into our fireplace on the 3 to 4 days per year that we have to use it in Southern California 😆.
