This makes me feel so old! But-in a good way!! I was really obsessed with rainbow brite when I was smaller. I think I still have my old rainbow brite doll ( 1983 ), it was my sisters, but she gave it to me. Thanks for posting this video, I didn’t even know some of these dolls existed! :)
When you showed the 90's Rainbow Brite, which I'd previously not ever seen, my first thought was "Eww!" It just seems like the 90's did a great job of destroying the magic in the 80's dolls. They did the same with Strawberry Shortcake to my supreme disgust. They took a magical figure and turned her into an average school kid. It appears they did the same with Rainbow Brite. Rainbow Brite doesn't belong in a baby's Carter's outfit, but it looks like that's exactly what they slapped on her. And, to me, Strawberry Shortcake doesn't belong in pre-teen garb. Absolutely zero magic in that.
I 100% agree with you!! I bought a couple of the new retro-style Strawberry Shortcake dolls that came out not that long ago, but I've refused to buy anything that shows her wearing jeans, t-shirts and stupid hats :P That's a good way of putting it - they removed the magic.
Awe that's the strawberry shortcake I grew up with tho, me and my sis watched it all the time lol I have no idea what the show was like before but the one I watched had all sorts of crazy magical things in it. I can understand tho how you feel seeing things from your childhood being recreated into new shows/ designs can be weird.
Hey! You may be right! I listened to it a couple more times with that in mind, and it's the best guess I've ever heard, so we'll go with that! :D Thanks!!
Awww it is she came Friday I got her with a green sprite I’ve put her with my mlp an other vintage collection but had to put her throu the washing machine on a 30 before I did 😆😆😁😁😁
I have no idea if you will see this comment since this video is from a while back, but the 2003 doll has that 1983 label on the back of her head is because they used the same head mold. So with other dolls as well you can often find two dates on them one on their heads and one on there body, one for a body mold and one for the head mold.. If that makes sense I'm not really sure I'm not the best with my words. Also I really enjoy your channel, though I wouldn't consider myself a big fan of rainbow brite. I feel like that makes it sound like I dislike her in some way, I don't! I just grew up with the movie I never saw the show as a kid. Me and my sis rewatched the movie so many times xD and I ended up watching what episodes of rainbow brite are here on RUclips though and that brought back some good memories of her from my child years. This was originally about you oops as I was saying I really do like your channel it' fun to see or hear about all this and your voice is so sweet and your personality is adorable it just makes it a very easy watch! So thanks. I hope you have a lovely day today and days to come [=
So sorry for the late reply, but thank you so much for the sweet comment!! I think you're exactly right that they used the same head mold and that explains the copyright year. Thank you for reminding me of that! I didn't see the movie until I was a teenager - that's so cool that you got to enjoy it as a kid! I'm so glad that you like my channel! I'm blushing at your compliments :D I hope you have lovely days to come as well!
I know just how you feel when the talking Rainbow Brite doll from 2003 leaves out "green" while naming the colors of the rainbow. In a Simpsons episode from 2006, a guy in a yard sale leaves out "blue" while singing that song from Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat about the colors.
Hi! Thanks so much for this video. It's helpful to those searching for the original 1984 doll. There are so many variations out there but I want one like the first doll shown. Is the white manufacturer tag on her back folded down and sown into the seam or is it one flap? Also, would you say her hair is more orange or yellow?
The white manufacturer tag on the 80s doll is folded down and sewn into the seam on her back, it is soft like satin and her hair is definitely more on the orange side. I hope that helps! :)
Why does the second doll resemble Chucky? lol Nice collection. Someone gifted me a special pencil, and as I'm a cartooner, I offered to draw them a favorite character. They chose Rainbow Brite. :3
The "My little pony" community commonly refer to it as "plastic cancer". Some of the modifiers know how to stop the spread but I don't (sorry) because original series MLP figures have similar problems. You could do a search with all that info & see what you get, good luck.
I don't think that Mattel actually made any of the Rainbow Brite merchandise back in the 80's. They worked with Hallmark on the design but the actual manufacturing was done by Mattel's usual outside contractors. I have RB dolls from Taiwan, Hong Kong, China, France, Spain and Mexico. The factory or factories in Taiwan produced most of the special versions like Star Shoes (small only), Red Panties (both large and small), and Turquoise Bodies (also both large and small). Only the small RB doll was made in France but both large and small were made in Spain. Even Brazil got large and small RB's but along with a Starlite, that was the end of the line over there. A lot of stuff was made in Italy. Some was sold across Europe (stampers, figurines...) and some were only for domestic consumption like the school supplies.
By the 1980s, I don't think any major toy companies were manufacturing toys in the US anymore. They were all outsourcing to other countries (mostly Asian countries). But Mattel was still the company in charge of manufacturing and distribution. I think the stampers were exclusive to Italy - I only ever see them show up on Italian Ebay. But the poseable figurines were sold in multiple European countries.
I just got mine back today and ordered her from eBay and she's from my baby days I'm the 80s baby along with Hugs bunch too.Now their back with me know.
As you seem to be the expert I am wondering if you can help. I had a rainbow brite for my 4th birthday in 1984 and the thing I remember really clearly is that she had really big feet. I have a photo of her so I have confirmed that the bottoms of her feet were large. I just bought a rainbow brite on ebay as my mother destroyed mine a number of years ago and her feet seem smaller. I looked on ebay again and there seems to be a little variation in the feet sizes but most seem smaller. Its it that I do in fact have a false memory or was there an early release where the feet were larger and if so can you give me advice on what to look for so I can track one down please
So watching this I noticed that my 2003 doll doesn't have the falling head like yours does, but looking on ebay pretty much all of them seem to do that? Which also makes me wonder, yours doesn't look like it had the red star on her lavender bow like mine. Or does it? (It could be my eyes playing tricks on me)
It might have been one of the very first ones released so they put a bunch of time into the head situation but also maybe the star fell off her bow but I wouldn't know that
If you can see this I have a question I got my doll today an I put her in the washing machine to freshen her up but water is inside the head do you know if I can remove the head to get the water out or will it gradually come out on its own as I dnt wanna break her as she will be a collector item.
It will probably soak into the body and then dry out. But yes, the head can be removed and then reattached. You would just need to cut the zip tie to take it off and then use a new zip tie to reattach it. Sorry I didn't see this sooner! I hope that helps!
I Seem to hear talking Rainbow Bright it saying " Do you know Rainbows come from a rock?" Makes sense since rainbows do occur when waterfalls splash atop of rocky waterfall areas on a sunny day from water mist… = ) Let me know if it sounds right and got it right. ( =
I never understood that rainbow brite 1997 doll .looks nothing like her. I unfortunately remember when she came out ( my age ) lol 😂 didn’t get her n still don’t . Was like lawsuit? Legit thought it was a fake rainbow brite with her image likeness or name being used at time . Well name anyway . It’s like they tried to combine lady lovely locks with her
I'm afraid most fans simply don't like the 90's line. It was too different and cheaply made. But perhaps I'll do a video just about those dolls if you're interested :)
I don't know. That's a good question! Cabbage Patch Kids came out in 1983 so perhaps Mattel was trying to grab some of that popularity as they had yarn hair too. I'm so glad they did. The plastic hair of other dolls gets so matted over time.

You're welcome!! I'm always happy to take people on a trip down memory lane :D

I think she's saying, "Did you know rainbows bring good luck". ???
That's the best guess I've ever heard!! Thank you! :D
Thanks for this vid I just bought my first 18” Rainbow Brite Doll from ‘83 so this was great to reference against the listing!
Excellent! I'm so glad it was helpful to you :) Congrats on your new doll!
We have the 2009 one! I was born in 85, so being a mom at 25 pregnant again, I bought that one for my 5 year old 😍💖
That's awesome :D
I love the precision you bring to your collecting.
This was fantastic! Thanks for sharing. It brought back so many memories. :D
+Raynor The Shy Lion I'm so glad you enjoyed it! :)

Loved the video! I am glad to know I have the original :). It was great to see all the versions that came out. Your channel is so fun!
+Farrah Lily Thanks so much! :D

Squee!!! It's always so fun getting new dolls! :D

You're a true Rainbow Brite fan.
i grew up with transformers and what not, but dang if this wasn't very informative! well worth my time!
Aww, thank you!! That's a very high compliment :)

lol!! That Simpsons episode sounds hilarious :)
I miss rainbow brite. thanks for the vid awesome memories :)
+TheAlmightyPossum Thanks so much for leaving a comment! :D
Great review!
Thanks! That means a lot coming from you :)

One more question about the tag...is it soft, satin like fabric or hard and stiff like paper?

RainbowBriteNet very helpful👍🏾 Tsm for replying doll☺️
No problem :D

+BearDamej Thanks for the info!!
the late Heather O Rourke did commercials of the Rainbow Brite Dolls back in 1983

I love the 80s Rainbow Brite large dolls.
They are fantastic, aren't they? :)
RainbowBriteNet yup

What's the best glue for reapplying a rainbow decal on the 18" dolls? I figured you would be the best person to ask!
Love this ❤️💙thanks so much,...but i don't like the new one,as an 80s kid i will stick with the original 🥰🥰🥰
Great review/compilation! Do you know if Hallmark is releasing any of the color kids in the future ?
Thank you! They just released Stormy, so I'm hoping they'll make other characters in the future as well :)
If you can see this I have a question I got my doll today an I put her in the washing machine to freshen her up but water is inside the head do you know if I can remove the head to get the water out or will it gradually come out on its own as I dnt wanna break her as she will be a collector item.

I saw the commercial for rainbow Bright from the 80s with heather O, Rourke
Loving your hare
The more current once look nothing like her....
Her face and her hair color are a little different, but otherwise they did a good job of recreating her I think.
I think she's saying "Did you know rainbows bring good luck?" But I like the way you thought out what you heard! I love waterfall rainbows :D
I am a child from the 80s I had a rainbow Brite doll also
I never understood that rainbow brite 1997 doll .looks nothing like her. I unfortunately remember when she came out ( my age ) lol 😂 didn’t get her n still don’t . Was like lawsuit? Legit thought it was a fake rainbow brite with her image likeness or name being used at time . Well name anyway . It’s like they tried to combine lady lovely locks with her
It was a legit doll, authorized by Hallmark. But yeah, I'm still wondering what they were thinking... lol
2004 rainbow 🌈 forgets Roy g biv lol 😂 like me in college and that other phrase can’t make it out
Did the 12" rainbow brite get deterioration?
Thankfully, no :) They've held up incredibly well!
Great, I was worried that mine would deteriorate because I just got it, and didn't want deterioration right as I got it.
She says did you know rainbow brings good luck
I love your videos!!!!
+Herra Weißewulf Aww thanks!! :D
Why people don't talk about the 90s version of Rainbow Brite?
I'm afraid most fans simply don't like the 90's line. It was too different and cheaply made. But perhaps I'll do a video just about those dolls if you're interested :)
RainbowBriteNet okay
do you collect fake or knock off rainbow brites i have several large dolls and there just sooo cute
Hello can you also do a toy review about baby sprite and baby bright I would really like to see that one
I'll add it to the list :)
Is there a reason why they gave the dolls Yarn hair?
I don't know. That's a good question! Cabbage Patch Kids came out in 1983 so perhaps Mattel was trying to grab some of that popularity as they had yarn hair too. I'm so glad they did. The plastic hair of other dolls gets so matted over time.
RainbowBriteNet yes I loveeee the yarn hair too! Was just wondering :) 🌈
