- Monique goes through the easy step-by-step installation process of the EMG GZR, Geezer Butler signature P bass pickup set. Watch how easy the solderless wiring makes this pickup swap to do at home.
EMG along with legendary artist Geezer Butler have collaborated to develop the GZR-P and GZR-PJ signature bass pickup sets. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame bass player started working with EMG founder Rob Turner in 2011, looking to recreate the classic bass tones he had in Black Sabbath’s early days. As Geezer and Black Sabbath moved from studio to touring in 2013 the final component of getting the classic Geezer tone was in play - a passive pickup with a truly vintage tone an feel.
To recapture Geezer’s early Black Sabbath tone, it meant a new EMG vintage style passive P & PJ design with a few modern touches. The all solderless P set uses Alnico V pole pieces and custom wound coils for just the right amount of punch and grit. The J (PJ set) also uses Alnico 5 poles and features two custom wound split-coils. This eliminates the noise and hum usually associated with early 70’s bass pickups and allows for more power and volume than any other standard single coil J - creating a remarkable balance between the P and the J. The result is an unmistakable early Geezer Butler bass tone with deep, tight low end that you hear on tunes like “Iron Man,” “War Pigs,” and “Paranoid,” just like the 1970’s. “I never felt comfortable giving my name to any other pickups, but this time these have blown me away.” - Geezer Butler

A most refreshing change from the usual ham-handed stooges that invariably stretch these tutorial / installation videos out for 25 minutes or more. Well done!
Great tutorial and I really like this lady of a few simple words. Fast and convincing video. More of this kind!
These pickups are by far the best i've ever used.
Best for vintage sound, best for distortion, absolut perfect for Black Sabbath!
These pickups are a must have for everybody who wants the true P bass sound.
I have to hand it to EMG this video was so good and clean. It helped me install the pickups in 10 mins
Bought these PUPs 1 year ago, and am now 95% with my build. Referring to this video in 2021 for help!
Great vid and so much easier than reading the instructions.
2024 and I have another set of these on the way for another build, so just getting a little refresher on the install haha. Guaranteed I'll be watching this tutorial again on the day.
i just got mine in the mail today for my fender bass! cant wait to try them out!
Should I get this or ObsidianWire
I don't even play bass, I just came here for Monique
Thanks, I didn't know for sure if the Pots were included this these pickups.
I just installed mine. I got a left handed bass. I followed the instructions and it was easy to do. The video helps some. Use the foam from the box to install under pickups and you’re all set. Sound is great! Only issue is that the emg logo will be under a and d strings. As a lefty, oh well. I will have to deal with it.
How do you like them ? I'm just about to put them in a custom build I'm doing.
Should I get this or ObsidianWire
And your pots are reverted
You had me at "hello"
Wow... looks easy peasy. Last time I did something like that it was a half-day event - would have been a day-long thing but I refused "help."
Easily installed Geezers in my P following this video. It's as easy as she makes it look.
How could it NOT be easy? No soldering? Holy Crap
that's the most beautiful guitar tech I've ever seen
Great job Monique !! Very well explained and demonstrated !! :)
great job! congrats!
Very good video. Thanks EMG and thanks Monique. I just bought my GZR Set and easily installed the pickups with this instructions. Had to pause a few times, but it all went smooth. With the EMG GZR pick-ups a great Precision Bass became an awesome one. Is there a chance that you offer a JJ-Set of the GZR one day? I would buy them right away for my Jazz-Bass. I know Geezer does not play Jazz-Bass, but as you already have a GZR Jazz-Pick-up developed for the PJ-Set, it should not be to hard to offer a GZR JJ-Set, too.
That's it!? Well holy hell I'm glad.
Good tutorial. Thanks.
She does orient the pins on the pots a certain way for the most efficient connection route, but doesn't mention it (I think). Clever system that's for sure.
how does it work when you have active pickups and you need to figure out how to do the ground connect wire?
Just put a PJ set in a Squier Jazz Bass and I absolutely love the tone so far! Now I have the comfort of a Jazz bass with the tone options of a PJ bass!
I'm putting a P set in my Squier affinity P bass or the red Frank Bello PHZ pickup.
@@Wheresthepepsibismol the Split P pickup is worth it on its own! Hope you like it as much as I do!
Did you modify your existing pickguard or buy another? I’m looking for a precut to do this job with.
@scott shows I ordered one from Amazon. Had to shave a little bit off of where the neck joint fits, but besides that, it fit pretty well.
@scott shows in all honesty, the hardest part was making the pickup cavity bigger to accommodate the split pickup, and it wasn't so much difficult as it was time-consuming. Best of luck with your mod my friend
Just got the PJ version for a bass mod I'm working on. Can anyone tell me if I need to invert the pickups on a lefty?
Hello, I have an EMG GZR-P precision type installed on my bass and I want to install another Pickup near the bridge ... and I would like to know if it is compatible with the MMHZ model or the TBHZ? Can the GZR-P be interconnected with MMHZ or TBHZ?
Just got a set of these for my Squire cv 70’s bass just got to install
me too but did not put any foams and the squier pickguard is like "too small" so the height of the pickups are low and does not come up when screwing ....
Yes me to I want to upgrade my squier affinity p/J
@@pattonPwr the foam is in the box, you have to cut it.
haha I'm also planning on upgrading my pups on my cv 70s walnut p bass
@@earthling273 You won’t regret the Geezer pups ,I didn’t have any trouble fitting but the pickgaurd was a aftermarket one
Well damn, had it all ready to go, but my output jack is a long one. Now I have to learn how to solder.
Does it matter what direction the E-A pickup goes? I know the D-G sides orientation thanks to the logo but the low end has no logo. Does it matter???
You guys should make a video showing how to install a bridge ground if the guitar doesn't have one
I just installed these. When I have my normal rig settings on (my "clean tone") of a compressor and tech21 sansamp I am getting a radio signal.
I am totally willing to concede it's the tech21 as it goes away when it's off. But the SD 1/4 pounders didn't have the issue.
Could it be that the gzr are just super hot?
been considering getting the pj set for my bass since i don't need need to solder em
Very good video, thanks. What is a tonal different between this and EMG PHZ?
Is there a video for basses with no pickguard? I have an Ibanez Mikro bass I am looking to upgrade.
Is there a video for the EMG 40HZ bass pickups?
Holly shit balls I’m not one to spend cash all my basses have been second and all my equipment for that matter , I have a cherry red 80s Mexican p and love it put the tone pot was crackling and I thought time to sort this out so invested in these , omg what a difference it sounds like a different bass , the tone is amazing there is more movement in tone when using the tone knob , it sounds like a much more high end bass , i do all my own set up do I love my bass might be cheaper but feels great now it is to me the complete bass I was looking for , no need to keep looking at new basses , well ok maybe not that yet lol
Where does the ground wire get soldered to please?
Are replacement pots available for this system??
If I want to install these to left handed bass and have left handed potentiometer direction, can I just flip some of the connector cables?
do these wires have any risk of falling out of the ports?
Anyone know if the pj set will fit a yamaha bb?
Why don’t more companies make their pickups so simple to install. I think many people would find it worth a few extra bucks to not have to fuss with soldering
QUESTION: can I add an additional pickup without changing out the pots?
So I crimped the grounds together but one didn’t hold. What should I do?
How about the pickup height between the strings?
cool video
cool comment
I just installed these today and have never replaced parts like that before. The only problem was that the pickup hight screws were too short and I had to use the ones that came stock on my bass
I just bought them for a custom build I'm doing. I haven't put them in yet I'm still not finished my pickguard. Was just wondering how much you like them?
I have a barrel jack that goes on the side of the instrument how do you recommend I proceed?
is it necessary to use the foam padding under the pickups??
EMG needs to make these pickups for Jazz bass! They sound great on my 6 p basses and I want them on my Jazz.
They have a Geezer Buttler pj set
@@a456987 he didnt say pj. He said jazz
They do make jazz pickups, just not Geezer pickups, because he doesn’t play a Jazz. But no worries, their Jazz pickups are just as awesome.
Did you put foam under the pickups?
I would like to know if it is possible to use the pickup-J (single) and place it near the neck of the bass?
Do you mean "reversing" the DG strings' pickup traditional position, installing it closer to the neck? Yes you can. I did it myself (I convert a JB bass into a PJ).
how can i add a suspension system ? can i put foam under de picks without the risk of damaging the connectors?
Yes, you can. Properly installed, foam cannot damage the connector.
great
Is this the same as the PJ set? Thanks
Can you please make a video with EMG 57/66 set and "arrow"-guitar (ESP SV, Alexi Laiho, Jackson RR, etc.)
2:55 - the ground cables get cut only, not stripped before going in the connector?
There's no need to strip the cables. The connector's inside contacts goes through the jacket.
where is the tone capacitor? I want to buy some EMG solderless parts and do some mods including different capacitors but I can't find any info on where the capacitors are and if you can even replace them in these systems.
i'm pretty sure it's a surface mount part on the pcb, they can be replaced if you're good with working on surface mount components
I'd pay good money to see you install a set of 81 85s into a vintage Les Paul.
Only fans
does the p and j set come with 2 volumes and 1 tone
jrock 1975 yeah
Can you mod it so it fits a volume + tone + three way switch bass?
Hey Monique! Should there be foam under the pickups for correct height? There is on the stock ones on a MIM Fender P bass?
Fred Cowles Hey there, I had the same issue with my Yamaha RBX bass, and matched the original pickup Height by measuring the old set with foam attached, then without the foam, then the Geezer pickup Height. Essentially, if the old pickup set with foam was 28cm high, I cut the foam to make sure the geezer set matched the original height. Hope that helps! 😊
he said Monique, dude.......now you ruined his fantasy
Girl of my dreams, she is.
Well I need to buy some EMG GZR pickups in my 1986 Ibanez Roadstar II RB650 bass because my stock pickups sound dead and its bothering me because people are picking on me for my playing when it's the bass itself.
Is the input jack as small as it really looks in the video
Victor Cuebas It's actually an output jack, but yes, that's it's size.
This pickup set is not difficult to instal, however be sure not to line the output jack cavity with conductive paint. If you have a problem with the installation contact Alison at EMG. She walked me thru the process by email, (I ended up dreaming about her) I put these in an Affinity PJ + a GFS bridge and have a dream bass for a very small investment. While this is only my second set of their pups, my opinion of EMG is sky high high. If you want high output and crisp midrange klank, these are the only pickups available......don't hesitate.
I want to order a p/j set..... how does one get the fat solderless cable thru an un-routed body? The existing wire and the hole are tiny. Might have to pass on these :-(.
You can put the wires out easily and put them back after putting the through the hole.
Are EMG pickups internally grounded? Why is she using the bridge ground wire?
Anyone?
+Dan Spurlock
If you suddenly imagine yourself a Lemmy -- you’ll need grounding strings and you. ))
Cool. Does a Squier P bass have the same pickguard? Thanks!
Max Tomlinson yes it will work with a squier
thanks!
Are those cables long enough if I want to skip the pots and go straight into the mono jack?
Attila Erdei maybe. But you can always buy longer ones from EMG.
Yes
This woukd be a better video if the image held for a few seconds after each stage so you can see exactly what goes where.
Okay ordered the EMG Geezer Butler Bass PJ set from your site, and got the hex driver (red). Also found a discount code online that saved me 10% ROCK16, if anyone else is getting one of these from the EMG folks direct. For me it paid for state tax (CA) and took a couple of bucks off of the driver.
John S was the install just as easy and solder free?
Does shielding need to be installed?
always just so you don't have to go back and do it later
Wow I thought putting in emgs were hard there super simple
What about springs/foam under the picks? Bummer
Was that a phone ringing in the background?
Monique best )
can you take these off and put on another bass
Monique is gorgeous
I installed these but now theres a lot of feedback noise with the tone, and when my hand goes near the strings, can anyone help?
Yaboi had the same problem. Did you found what was the problem with it?
Yaboi had the same problem. Did you found what was the problem with it?
Try one of the pickup parts around. That helped for some pp I hear.. I notieced emg shows it two different ways in the instructions, where all images show logo positioned such that if ur holding the bass u would see "emg" straight down but yet shows it wired where they don't criss cross which if u did would make the logo look like "gme' from playing position looking down and logo physically touching the half of the pickup closer to the neck. Either way I think it goes the way where it says emg straight down if u look down while holding the bass in playing position.
Anyways Make sure u grounded it correctly and verify that all the arrows are facing up on the quick connect parts. You also might need to install extra sheilding
If all else fails take a look at your bridge ground wire for injory and or manually solder any connections that maybe deffective, but you'll need a meter to test this possibly but u can solder it just like anything else by sniping off the quick connect part and striping the end then soldering.
Before I forget u can also check to make sure no small metal material is stuck to the pick ups poll parts of the pickup. And u can try adjusting the pickup hight lower.
If nothing works then maybe you need a refund.
Wait, so there is no foam that goes behind the pickups?
I didnt see any foam down in the cavities either... nobody talks about the foam or the 2 sided tape or affixing the foam (i.e. window insulating sticky foam tape) to the underside of the pickup.
@@IamUncledeuce Ended up cutting up and using the protective foam in the package, it works pretty well and gets the pickup to a desirable height.
I did the same thing as Dr Strangelove and it worked very well.
@@kellerproof same. It's obviously made for that 💁🏾♂️
But the instructions are not detailed much in the booklet.
It would be nice if you would pause long enough to let us actually see how it’s wired up.
Not sure who is hotter, the Geezer Buttler pickups or Monique. Anyways, is always refreshing to watch a beautiful woman talking about bass related stuff.
Only problem that she does not address is the shaft on the pots are larger , to large for any standard knob to fit,,i think someone said they are 6mm?
Well my emg logo is not in the right place...fuck that. It work and it's AMAZING!!
Anyone know if these will fit in a gibson thunderbird?
This has me wishing all pickups were solder-less
good pick ups but it sucks they don't adjust in height /up and down...why?
Did you put foam under them? You'd need to if you want them higher.
Should I get this or ObsidianWire
Remember, Obsidian Wire allows you to swap and mix pickups. While the EMG GZR set is only designed specifically for these pickups. Given their uniquely designed end connectors. Not sure if you can install other EMG bass pickups with the same connector ends, but that's probably about it. I have purchased the Obsidian Wire P bass set, and a set of Seymour Duncan Quarter Pound bass pickups. In the process of installing them. For my next P bass, I might buy this EMG set, just to mix things up.
CHRISTOS FRAGIAS I ended up getting the geezer butler pickups and they were awesome sounding
That's way easier then soldering, but, what if you have to shorten a cable to keep things clean ?!
you just rol them and use a security seal, or WTF you want to have them all tight.
The EMG Hex Driver only costs about USD $5 on EMG's website...GREAT! Postage to Australia? USD $50 plus. REALLY!? Why doesn't EMG just add the Hexa Drive with these pickups? I would be more than happy to pay the difference. And would guarantee EMG more sales of the Hexa Drive.
Ok but what about the PJ pickups
I have the PJ set
Moni knows.
I could watch her do this all day, but she made a mistake with the tone pot connections. According to the instructions that came with my set she has the tone pot connections reversed.
у меня не работают ((
shame it is not showing how to install into a bass that has no pickguard, like what i have, it be more useful due to not having the ability's to remove anything more than a access cover
hej tim, I made a video with the pickups installed into the body: ruclips.net/video/obhf-b5wnhE/видео.html
not such a hot girl but maybe more infos ;-)
I have a Squier PJ Bass that has a volume pot for EACH pickup PLUS a tone pot, so the wiring kit would be useless to me
The EMG's Geeze Butler GZR PJ version comes with a wiring kit for that configuration (tone > bridge volume > neck volume).
Even though you see 2 pickups, they are really only 1 pickup chopped into a 2 configuration. Emg did this in order to emulate a Humbucker and so, reducing the Humm of a single coil pickups like the J model. This means, that you only need 1 volume pot, because it is only 1 pickup
So, no soldering? None???
she's hot!
Agreed. Plus she's smart and into bass! Brunettes are best!
"Make sure"
I didn't make sure and burnt my house down. Listen to what the lady says!
Locking washer are installed improperly.
