I've already upgraded pickups and switches to EMG on 2 guitars and now working on the third, then a bass. EMG has always been the best, but this easy install makes it that much better. I put a ZW set in one of my LP guitars. I love it. The solder less system is great. My older guitars have EMG's I had to solder. I like the Solder less system better.
Because they are active pickups. They have their own preamps, and they need a separate battery to run. If they were passive pickups they wouldn't need the battery. I totally agree though dude, EMG has made an awesome system here. Hope this information helps.
What about wiring it to just one volume and one tone with a 3 way toggle? Thinking about buying the 81 85 combo but my guitar is only set up for that. Thanks~!🙂
Monique.... Why do I get an out of phase tone when I use both pickups on my Paul.... just installed an 81TWX and an 89XR all solderless w toggle. Used the standard LP control layout. and I used the provided vols and active tones. Each pickup sounds normal in single coil mode and humbucker but when both pickups are selected in single or humbucker, I get a slight out of phase tone, especially when I use a boost pedal. THEY SOUND INSANE THO!!!! Well done.
I love emg pickups I have the h4 and h4a in a esp ec 50 and was very easy but I'm thinking of getting a v guitar would like to see how that would go since most of them have that high output jack does emg sell a longer output cable?

Hi, since one of the volume potentiometer on my guitar ( equipped with a hardwired setup: Emg 81/Emg 60) produces scratchy noise and mutes the signal too, I'm planning to replace it with a fresh one. The only concern is that my guitar is a left handed one. At the moment with the stock hardwired connection potentiometers are correctly wired to operate for a left handed guitarist ( so not to use it in reverse). Is it possible to maintain the correct rotation of the pots with the new solderless system? To resume, is it possible to decide the turning direction of the pots ( as you could do with the hardwired connection), with the actual solderless system? Thanx in advance
Can you solder new pots to those circuit boards if the pots ever go bad? I did exactly that, but I only get sound at max volume. the replacement pots are larger than the old ones that died though. the only alpha pots i could find
They were smart to use an instrument with easy passages to snake the pickup connector cables through. Try sending the cable from a rear routed control cavity to a neck pickup on a solid body with no pickguard via the small bored hole designed for solderable pickup leads. Not gonna happen. It is a ton of fun opening up that hole so the EMG connector will pass through. Sometimes you can't just drill it out bigger and have to attack it with hand tools. Then you run the risk of the floor of the pickup rout becoming ugly and unprofessional looking. After a certain point, it doesn't feel like a wiring upgrade. It feels like a chop job. But once it's done, the components are good and it all works well. Soldering is more satisfying though.
I tried installing emg Hz pickups on my Ltd EC256. I followed the diagrams but the volume is very low and both pickups are on no matter what position the toggle switch is in. (I bought the emg toggle switch for the quick solderless connection) Any ideas would be appreciated.
you just need to connect pins to the passive pickup cable tips, and thats it. electronilab.co/tienda/regleta-conector-macho-2-54mm-40-x-1-pines/ You can cut 1 or 2 of this pins or even 3.......also you can bend the tips to save space if you want (this is what you actually see on the terminas of an active pickup)

An EMG emailed me and said " Probably the easiest route to go with this would be to change the single tone to a master tone affecting all the pickups. If you did it this way, you can just put the volume, tone, and VMC all in line with the output of the switch to the output jack. @@thrashtodeth9442 late to this, but she’s changing both the pickups of the guitar and the way the guitar is wired. Instead of the wiring being soldered (think of a glue thats made with metals), which can be pretty scary to try to do if it’s your first time. Making the wiring system solderless, all you’d have to do for future pick up changes (as long as they’re EMGs) is unplug the older pickups and plug in the new ones and you’re good to go. As opposed to having to solder wires to the pots that they belong to

I'm trying right now to instal these things but the instructions in the box are completely worthless (they're for other types I gues): I tried to follow the instructions and that makes so the B245 buss is left outside, but even if I go by logic instead of following the paper, there's just not enough cable connections to get the Buss B245 in. It's a nightmare. Somebody please give me some instructions.
I put 81 85 on my dean razorback killswitch, but the cavity is so small i had to remove the killswitch and even then the holes to get to the pickups/selector are too small so i couldnt connect the toggle switch, even with a pickup switch that has thin wires
Similar situation I had with my Carvin LB75 bass. I'm installing volume controls for each pickup, which is easy. The space to install the BTS active EQ is a bit of extra effort. I wired up the pots before I installed them. Not getting any sound though.

thats what i had to do. i was very upset as i had to source additional wires when the EMG kit was *supposed* to have everything. its not always easy trying to find wire to use
You can also use a guitar pick or pencil to tap the pickups. I prefer using something that isn't also magnetic so as to not transfer magnetic particles to the pick up covers.

All pickups and wiring kits come with very clear colored diagrams.

You can put a layer of foam in the existing cavity and place your battery inside. Just gotta play a little Tetris, but it works.

You can skip both tone and volume pots and go straight from the bus to the output Jack. I do this on all my guitars

Clearly you plugged something in the wrong spot if the two pickups are on. Start all from ZERO again.

What about the wire that is grounded to bridge? Does it become redundant at this point? Didn't catch you mention it, so is it not required?
Grounding is not required. The wire connected to the bridge is not needed due to the the active pickup connected to the battery.

There are EMGs especially made for splitting, like EMG89, they come with a push/pull pot and fitting electronics. i have one of these in my explorer

There should be enough room to secure a 9v battery, I'm using a Jackson JS32, but if there isn't, I don't know.

thats what i had to do. i was very upset as i had to source additional wires when the EMG kit was *supposed* to have everything. its not always easy trying to find wire to use
I think the kit is specific to an active set of pickups... I just bought the emg switch from Solo guitars.

You can also use a guitar pick or pencil to tap the pickups. I prefer using something that isn't also magnetic so as to not transfer magnetic particles to the pick up covers.
