The Kursk disaster was a tragic submarine accident that occurred on August 12, 2000, during a Russian naval exercise in the Barents Sea. A catastrophic explosion in the torpedo room, followed by a second massive blast, killed most of the 118 crew onboard instantly. Twenty-three survivors in the aft compartment struggled to stay alive as oxygen dwindled, but bureaucratic delays and outdated rescue efforts sealed their fate. By the time international aid was accepted eight days later, all were dead. The incident highlighted severe flaws in submarine safety, rescue protocols, and governmental transparency, leaving a somber legacy in naval history.
