  • Developing Film Part 1 - Loading the Tank

This video is all about loading 35mm and 120 film onto reels, and then loading those into a tank, so that they are ready for development. Which will be covered in Part 2 of this series.
The easiest way to load 35mm film onto a reel is by having the leader out of the canister to start with. This is easily done if you have a manual camera, and have to rewind the film back yourself. If you are not using such a camera, you will either have to use a film leader retriever, or you will have to use an opener to open the canister, if you opt to open the canister you will have to perform all the steps in complete darkness, which is perfectly doable with some practice.
With the leader of the film out of the canister, you are now ready to cut part of the leader off, this piece can be saved and used when testing previously mixed fixer.
Once the leader is cut off, it is recommended to flare the edges of the film, that way they won't get caught on the reel as it is being loaded, this can save a lot of frustration in the end.
Before loading the film onto the reel, it is a good idea to make sure the ball bearings are moving freely, as they are they may stick sometimes.
The film can now be started into the reel.
Before turning the lights off, and making the room completely dark, it's a good idea to make a mental note of where all the parts of the tank are, and the tools needed. One the lights go out, you won't be able to see anything.
Once the room is dark, you can start ratcheting the film onto the reel, once you reach the end, just cut at the canister with a pair of scissors, assemble the tank components, place the reel into the tank, and put on the light tight lid.
Now it's ready for the chemicals.

Nice, clear presentation. I've been doing my 35mm for 55 years by pulling the roll free of the cartridge and letting it tangle while I load the reel spool. Your way is better. I hope you will have the time and interest to do similar subject videos more frequently.

you can already add the first part of the film in the roller with the lights on? like i know that ill loose some frames, but its makes a lot easier for a beginner like me...
