I have been into goth/punk music since the mid 80's so I was a full grown adult when the mall goth crap happened. They had nothing to do with the actual goth community, they were outside of it looking in. Some of them eventually joined the goth community, while others didn't. I had one of them follow me inside a Toys R' Us one time until they got the courage to ask me about a Christian Death shirt I was wearing. They were wanting to know if they were the same as Marilyn Manson. I was polite and told them no. They were harmless for the most part.

The issue with "Mall Goth" is that it was always an oxymoron term because it didn't originate from the goth scene. It got pigeon-holed into the scene by the mainstream media that thought that it was goth because of the heavy use of black and makeup when really, it had nothing to do with goth at all which is a music-based scene. The real term for this style was actually called "Mallcore". Not many people seem to know that and I didn't at first until I talked to one of my older friends informed me about that. So I REALLY wouldn't put this as anything "goth" at all. No goth music, the people didn't listen to the music neither, they wee usually as you said, just Metalheads and Mansonites. And you're right that the Crow did kickstart this trend because even the Crow was not a "goth" movie. The soundtrack was a Mallcore wet-dream, yeah it had the Cure but out of the 14 bands that were featured, they were the only one while the soundtrack as a whole was geared toward Industrial & Alternative Rock.
That all said, looking at Mallcore does take me since I was around during the later years of that trend and partook a little in it (was really into Kittie, Rob Zombie, Rammstein, and Slipknot) as a teenager so it's certainly nostalgic lol. To answer your question of were they really the posers of the goth scene? I would say yes because they claimed to be goth without liking goth music. I think back to those days and every fellow teen I knew who was going for that look didn't listen to any goth bands and this contributed to why it was much harder to find goth music in the 2000s because of this misappropriation. Anyway, this is why I personally suggest people to just refer to this style as "mallcore" as to stop misappropriating it into goth when it had nothing to do with it. It's a legit style (for better or worse lol) but it's not goth so it's best to stop associating it with the goth scene and just refer to it as "Mallcore" as that acknowledges that it's a style without misappropriating the goth scene.

All this information was so interesting! Thank you for sharing. And I agree, why label it goth if it has nothing to do with the music. I think that's where the term spooky kids came from but I couldn't really find much info on why that label also existed.
Thank you so much for watching 🖤

@@ashleycole97 No problem! And actually "The Spooky Kids" came from Marilyn Manson, his band was originally called "Marilyn Manson and the Spooky Kids" from 1989 to 1993 before he decided to drop the "Spooky Kids" from the name and simply go with "Marilyn Manson" but the word would still be used to describe his fans until the term "Mansonite" became the word used in the late 90s to describe his fanbase :)

Do you like nu-metal? I'm in love with post-punk and goth music but nu-metal is my absolute favorite genre.

@@ashleycole97 Evanescence doesn't count but the others do! What got me into nu-metal is Deftones, Korn, System of a Down, Slipknot, Nonpoint, and if they count, Kittie.

@@Moderate_Rock The only reason why Evanescence gets grouped as Nu-Metal is because of "Bring Me To Life" because of the rap featured in it. But in saying that, I feel like the "Fallen" album could fit into Nu-Metal because aside from "Bring Me To Life", "Going Under", "Haunted", "Taking Over Me", "Tourniquet", and "Imaginary" do have that very angsty feel to them that you saw in Nu-Metal. They just added some more classical elements (Amy's piano playing) to give it a more somber feeling to it as opposed to the more aggressive style. What I'm saying is remove the piano from those songs and it would sound like traditional Nu-Metal lol.

@@Moderate_Rock Haha yeah, I was pretty surprised when I realized that as well but it makes sense because Ben Moody wanted to make a commercially successful album and because Nu-Metal was the "hot" new thing at the time in the late 90s into the early 2000s (Evanescence formed in 1995), it made sense why he wanted to incorporate that style into most of their songs and why when Ben and the older members left the band, Evanescence's sequel album "The Open Door" went in a different sound direction going more toward what Amy wanted which was a more Symphonic Rock type of style.
