The varnish definitely gives Eastman an identity in the guitar world!

Hello!! Good demo! Do you think the Eastman is capable to do Neil Young? What about the feedback with distortion or fuzz?

I preferred the Eastman on the bridge and middle positions, and the Gretsch on the neck. Overall I felt like the Eastman was sweeter and more articulate, and the Gretsch had a little more depth and dimensionality - the Eastman brings the tone right to your ears, the Gretsch kind of envelops you in it.

Another awesome video! How do you think the pickups compare? I have a Tennessee Rose with the HS Filtertron. I am considering changing them to one of the TV Jones pickups. I play mostly Chet stuff and from what I've seen online on forums, it seems to be split between the HS and the TV Jones classic or Ray Butts full fidelity. Do you have an opinion on that or maybe you have tried changing the pick ups? I'm a student and have a very limited budget so I'm not in a position to try out all the pickups haha. Anyway, thanks for another great video!

Thank you!! So, I’m a major fan of both the HD Filtertrons and the TV Jones for different things. Admittedly, I haven’t had a chance to try Ray Butts pickups, so while I’m sure they can be included in this conversation, I just have no experience with which to speak on them.
That said, I’d say you’re probably better sticking with the Filtertrons if your primarily play Chet stuff. I love my TV Jones equipped guitars, but I find that they tend to be hotter than my Filtertrons, which results in a bit more drive than I like when I’m playing a Chet tune. Understand that this is just my opinion, and there are guitarists I really look up to in this style who use TV Jones exclusively for this style and they are better than me! Haha.

@@CodyJungGuitar Brilliant thank you for taking the time to give an extended response :)
This is kind of what I thought from the pickup swap demos on youtube, but at the same time I saw people strongly claiming that the TVJ is the way to go, I guess that's the internet for you tho haha. Will be sticking with my Filtertrons then and invest the money into something else. Thanks again!

To my ears the Eastman is the clear winner. The whole thing sounds less compressed. Like the sound still has more room to bloom. It sounds more bouncy.

I appreciate your opinion and comment! I really enjoy hearing people’s opinions on these comparisons, because what people hear can be so subjective sometimes. I think your assessment about it being “bouncy” is pretty on point. Thanks for watching!

Is the Eastman better value for being about $800 less in cost ? I know its a video but they sound pretty close. Eastman maybe a bit fuller. Nice demo.

That’s a good question. I’m not sure that it’s a matter of “better value.” I think Eastman did a good job of offering some a bit different than Gretsch. You are definitely right that a video is only going to give you so much of an idea about the differences. Playing them in-person is of course best. Maybe this is the gear hoarder in me, but I have managed to find uses for both! Haha. Thanks for watching!

    I own a Eastman T-58v and a gretsch Chet Atkins 6120
Honestly the Eastman to me is better for a few reasons
The spoils spruce top and fully floating arch top bridge actually allow you to get that warm woody arch top tone, while the bridge doesn’t get twangy it’s still woody but very very bright
The 6120 sounds a lot more like a solid body thanks to the trestle bracing along with the pinned bridge and lamination
It stays in tune alot better with bigsby use
The Eastman atleast to me is nicer the wound strange have a very nice attack that I appreciate

The Eastman is far woodier and more natural. The Gretsch is much more focused and compressed. The Eastman sounds like an old Gretsch.

    • @CodyJungGuitar
      @CodyJungGuitar  4 года назад

That is a very good way to describe the comparison! I agree, I think the Eastman is similar to the sounds of the early Gretsch Guitars. Thanks for watching.

The Eastman has a warmer Jazzier tone. Gretsch is Gretsch; don't fall asleep on Eastman...........

I'd say that's a pretty accurate assessment. I love my Eastmans as well as my Gretsch guitars, and I honestly use both without feeling like they're redundant. Thanks for listening!

Haha. Spoken like a true Gretsch fan! I really love both of these guitars, and use them for different applications. Can't go wrong with more guitars.

Hi I am a guy who has been using the 6120 Chet DC for the past 51 years I always found Gretsches superiour to Gibsons and Fenders to the extent that I went to usa to restart the production of Gretsches by myself in 1986 only to find out that Fred Gretsch regained the control of the firm and was about to re-start the production...We met, discussed and have been friends ever since Just last week he put a photo of me& 6120 on his twitter account.I don't call my self a guitar player but have been friends with local luthiers in İstanbul and my current 3 top guitars are one by Murat Sezen (U-Tube: To Ornette s 85th Birthday) one by Adnan Çelik (Murat Taner plays Chanting Ornette Coleman) And a carved one (Briken Guitars hand made carved classical guitar...So you can say I am not biased...That was just my (not so) humble op. Stay safe and in touch :)))))
