    Looks like a very nice improvement over the Ion. Hopefully we'll be able to get different brake widths after the fact so this binding can move from ski to ski to ski

      It's lighter without sacrificing performance and has some great new features, and yes, breaks will be sold separately once it launches.

    The brake looks like it doesn't lock into place very well, when his heel isn't weighted down you can see the arms hang lower than the ski.

      Keep in mind that this is a working prototype and there are still some tweaks to be made and that is one of them, but good eye for noticing!

    The brake does not seem to lock down properly when in tour mode?

      ensure that the turret is fully in the neutral position (parallel with the ski) and that now snow or debris is under the brake pad. It should click in firmly and if not it may be worn, if they are old, if they are new then I'd take them to a ski shop to have a look at.

    How does this binding compare to the ION 12 and other bindings like the Salomon MTN and the Dynafit ST radical? Trying to figure out what binding would be best for me as I’m a fairly light and not agressive skier, and I’d mostly be using the binding in conjunction with my salomon s/lab x-alp boots for touring along with the odd resort day here and there.

      Hey Riley, G3's new Zed binding is a lighter version of their Ion binding. If you are lighter and don't ski too aggressively or in the resort much then I would consider any of the bindings you mention. All good choices as they are all light and have brakes. I prefer the Ion and Zed as they are well made and work well, in addition to being able to twist them, either way, the risers are mirrored so they are super simple to use. Check out our site for reviews of the Salomon MTN: backcountryskiingcanada.com/Salomon-MTN-Bindings and G3's Ion: backcountryskiingcanada.com/G3-Ion-12-Binding, the Zed will hopefully be reviewed soon. Also, consider Marker's new Alpinist 12: backcountryskiingcanada.com/Marker-Alpinist-12-Bindings

    Does it ski the same and have same retention capabilities of Ion? Or is this a lighter replacement with no performance/feature sacrifice?

      As far as I have been told, these will be a lighter/better version of the Ion's with no loss in performance. We'll be touring these this winter, so stay tuned for tht!

    Will the zed offer the new improvement that the job made where the first step in tour mode locks the binding to prevent rotation on the heel piece?

    • @Backcountryskiingcanada
      @Backcountryskiingcanada  6 лет назад

      Not sure I completely follow this as this binding is essentially the same as the G3 Ion. The heel does not rotate when you step unto it.

      Sorry probably poorly worded on my part. Looked up the ion this year and it said a new feature was the auto-rotation lock. Where the first step locked the heel piece into place preventing any potential twisting during touring. I couldn’t tell if the zed offered the same feature where the heel piece locked while touring.

      We have not heard of any such new feature for the Ion, but we'll be reviewing the Zed this fall/winter so stay tuned for that and I can give you more info at that time. Thanks for your question!

      This is the video explaining the auto-lock for the heel piece. It doesn’t seem as if the zed offers it but I can’t quite tell from your video.

    Does it fit the G3 crampons?
