  • The Mamoiada Carnival is one of the most famous and ancient folkloristic festivals in Sardinia.
A traditional Carnival, without allegorical floats or modern masks, but among the most suggestive and authentic of Barbagia.
The interior of the town flows into the main square of the historic center, wearing the traditional costume of the town and dancing the famous "su passu torrau a sa mamujadina" to the sound of the accordion, for hours and hours.
The whole party is absolutely authentic and traditional, except for visitors and tourists who flock to the town every year, coming from all over the world to watch this show.
There are also stalls with sweets, typical liqueurs and gadgets.
The attention of the participants is captured by the arrival of the Mamuthones of the Issohadores, the most folkloristic and significant masks of the whole party.
Their parade is a march, slow and solemn, accompanied by the sound of hundreds of bells and bells, an integral part of their costumes.
At each step, in unison, they generate a rhythmic tinkling that involves and fascinates the crowd, inducing in it an archaic and deep, tribal feeling.
The two figures have different characteristics, clothing and movements, but they perform together in a precise ceremony.
Mamuthones and Issohadores are the true masters of the Carnival; with their rhythmic dance they are the very symbol of Mamoiada's "Carrasegare".
From time to time, without interrupting the composure of their movements, they interrupt the performance and move through the crowd.
According to tradition, those born in a Issohadores family cannot parade like Mamuthones or vice versa, it is a tradition that is handed down from father to son and there is no exchange of roles.
Guests in the Mamoiada carnival also the "Samugheo Mamutzones", dressed in white and black goat skins, some bundles of bells and carrying large horns on their heads mounted on a cork headdress covered in leather.
Curious is also the exhibition of the "Diavolo di Tufara" by Campobasso, dressed in animal skins and followed by a hooded figure dressed in black, surrounded by two boys dressed in white and red who shake and rub a long sickle on the ground, also They are symbolic expression of the contrast between life and death, between good and evil.
    Description of costumes:
Mamuthones: men wearing a black wooden mask with rough features and dressed in dark sheepskin.
They wear a large bundle of cowbells on the back, larger at the top smaller at the bottom, and a small group of bells on the front.
They appear for the first time on January 17th, on the feast of Saint Anthony and immediately afterwards for the Sunday and Tuesday of the Mamoiadino carnival.
They are so famous that they are often hosted in many folk festivals in other countries of the island and in the world.
Issohadores: men dressed in red bodices with a bundle of bells, white wooden mask, black headdress ("Sa Berritta") stopped by a handkerchief, white trousers ("carzas" or "carzones") and a small black shawl with floral embroidery ( "s'issalletto").
Their purpose is to escort the Mamuthones. Skilled in using ropes, they capture young women as a sign of good luck for good health and fertility.
Once landowners were captured to wish them a good year and they reciprocated by bringing the whole group back to their home and offering wine and sweets; today this attention is given to local authorities, but the intent remains unchanged.
Origin and meaning of the Mamuthones:
The masks of the Mamuthones and the Issohadores have different possible meanings. The Mamuthones appear as a herd of oxen marred by the Issohadores, their herdsmen; but they could also represent men "imbovati", that is shepherds who identify themselves in the ox as a sign of veneration for an animal so useful and valuable to man.
According to some, their performance celebrates the victory of the shepherds of Barbagia (the Issohadores) over the Saracen invaders imprisoned and led in procession (the Mamuthones).
According to others it would be a ritual procession of ancient Nuragic origin in honor of some agricultural and pastoral god, referring to the cult of the ox.
According to the scholar of popular traditions Dolores Turchi, the mask would be linked to an ancestral fertility rite originating from ancient Dionysian cults spread throughout the Mediterranean; in these ceremonies the followers considered themselves possessed by the god and taken by the frenzy they ate raw meats torn with the hands.
According to others the mask of the Mamuthones would be the effigy of some demonic spirit.
