  • Čičava or Čičva (eng. Chichva) is a ruin of a castle from the 13th century standing on a wooded outcrop of the Beskydy foothills in the suburb of Mernícka pahorkatina , above the village of Sedliská. The castle was probably built in the years 1309 - 1316 and became a guard fortress at the pass "Polish Gate" (Porta Polonica). It was the center of a large estate, which included more than 60 municipalities.
In 1527, it was the county assembly and the seat of the archive of the Zemplín seat . In the same year, Ján Zápoľský conquered and set him on fire. The archive of the Zemplín chair also burned down during the fire. However, the castle was repaired and renovated again.
In 1575 , František Nádašdy's wedding to Alžbeta Bátoriová was held in nearby Vranov nad Topľou . Čičava Castle was also a part of the bride's vein. In 1610 , Elizabeth's daughter Katarína, who married Juraj Druget of Humenné, got him into the vein . This put the castle in the hands of the Druget family , who contributed to its greatest expansion.
In 1684 it was conquered by Tököli's troops. In 1704 , the troops of Francis II seized it . Rákociho . They repaired the damaged parts and secured the castle. It was in the hands of the Rákoci rebels until 1711, when the Rákoci commander, Count František Barkóci, joined the side of the imperial troops and gave them a castle, which was given and demolished by Imperial General Laucken.

Poškodené časti opravili a hrad zabezpečili.

A very Beautiful Castle indeed..... I sure wish we could have seen it in it’s prime.....such a shame that the General destroyed much of the Castle 🏰 in 1711..... in the General’s time it was already almost 400yrs old..... Do you know the reason he demolished the castle in 1711? I am a true history buff and do not believe we should destroy history like this (shame on the General....although he probably felt threatened by it’s presence in that time)!! Those who destroy history are trying to change and alter our past and not allowing us all to learn our true past and thus learn from our history!! Thank you so very kindly for sharing this piece of architecture and history...a great Video!! 73 from America K4BBC

Very nice comment! Thank you! Yes, In 1678, a series of uprisings broke out against the Emperor of Hungary, during which the insurgents occupied a number of local castles. After the suppression of the uprisings in 1711, the imperial troops finally managed to occupy this castle as well. I presume that in order to prevent the re-occupation of the castle by the insurgents, General Laucken gave the order to demolish this beautiful castle. Aloha Paul, great video! Was castle damaged 75 years ago during WWII? The postcard from 1911 until now shows a markable difference.
Also, did they ever produce a postage stamp of this castle at any point in the past? Can a postage stamp be commemorated now to help restore it to original stature?

Hi Todd. The castle was loosing its integrity and time was demaging it to ruins like you can see it now. There is not so much money to get this castle in to a previous look...

I was wondering, is this castle a part of the string of castles that the Templars and other Crusaders built? I know that Europe has been covered with castles. Looks as if it has been picked over for free building material and now the scaffolding shows there is some restoral going on. KC3BXZ Joe 73

Hello Joe. This castle was build as the guardian fortress standing on the strategic place located on the ex-border between an old Kingdom of Hungary and old Russia in 12th century. Borders were relocate and today is the whole area Slovakia, but this castle remains a reminder of this history to this day :-)

Very cool, thanks for the history. Castles built into the living rock were meant for defense. That one looks like it was added to a lot. Much seems to be hidden by trees. Maybe there was a monastery attached to it. I contacted stations in Slovak Republic on 20 meters. Is that the same place as Slovakia? J
