My master always said: A good punch is like a building: you need a solid foundation to build on. A punch starts from the feet, then through the legs, hips and then the upper body follows.
Harnessing the power of the earth.
Yeah, when I first practised Karate, my instructor and seniors made me to practised kiba dachi for a whole week. Then the next week I practised zenkutsu dachi and how to move in zenkutsu dachi. I wasn't taught how to throw a single punch until my basic stances were somewhat acceptable. Stances are crucial for any kind of striking
@LeefromCalgary I don't think so. Unlike old styles, modern gyms have many tools to train specific muscles, they also has specific schedules for conditioning, technique training and sparring so stable stances will come eventually. Old schools don't have that much equipment so you must have it from the beginning and the training process will only further enhance it
@Fred Forbes I think it depends on the person. There are boxers with fat belly that hit like a truck and those don't. The same can be said for fit guy
A nearly 7 min video which could be summed up with: Have a solid base and don't simply muscle your punches. Basic basic stuff....but important!
I am glad that Karate in Okinawa is not rooted in stone. Ippei-sensei does not ignore and ‘denounce’ modern techniques and how we can evolve this fighting art.
No unnecessary movement, no unnecessary power should be applied to the beautiful form of Okinawa Karate
A very good advice. And it isn't just about Karate, every other martial arts have this principle, it's just the sport aspect of many of them made the athletes forget this, either it is sport Karate athlete over-extending themselves to get a point or boxer swinging wildly and hurting their hands in exchange of a K.O
Big big fan of your videos.
@@syedmurtaza8106 I'm assuming you're talking about me and not about 沖縄伝統空手Okinawa Traditional Karate Channel but accidentally replying to me. Thank you very much

As a new practitioner of Goju Ryu I have been enjoying your videos and they have been helping me in my journey as a new karateka at 30 years old.
いただきます。どもありがとうなやぎ先生。
Good. When we become masters then we grow big in size too.🙏
I kept looking at his knuckles instead of reading the subtitles
I keep looking at his gut. Being fat doesn't make you powerful, it makes you a non athlete, therefore undertrained. I don't believe in these fat out of shaped MASTERS.
@@ianrugel1864 By his age, the shape most be influenced on his nutrition. I dont think this man is undertrained, he can woop your ass in seconds without doubt.
@@jujafak5943 Really. And you Know me? You must be one of those internet warriors.
@@ianrugel1864 I dont know who you are pal, but the only thing I know about internet is that the most noisy people are the lamest. So at least you are a karate shihan like him you better shut your mouth already.

Bonne Année 2021
Thanks. I teach karate as well. feet hips and at the end is a hand. The fist is just the transfer of energy through the hips and legs from the ground. a solid center connects it all together.🥋
Nice
Wow master i Can feel your energy here! Wow thank you master for explain:) OS!
My karate is MMA style, but this video is helpful.
the better the techniques along with best speed = Power.
Also, and i studied boxing, before karate, the posture give you more distance of reach with the head NOT looking down
No matter how strong your punch is, you have as much knockout chances as you have precision and timing. Of course, it's important (and fun) to develop a powerful punch, but people often overlook the fact that most of that so called "knockout power" doesn't come from the power of the punch itself, but from being in the right place at the right time.
This guy is very solid strong. Those super powerful wiry guys really impress me. Mostly Okinawan styles. Evidently, easier for 140 pound to maximize strength over lets say 210 pounds plus to get to maximize punch.
If you punch from a square position, your arm is not fully extended. It's much harder to reach your opponent, especially if they are taller and have longer arms. Keep feet parallel step with your heal closest to your opponent (step sideways). You create more range, more cover, and present a smaller target, with full extension of your arm and you body behind your blow.
I think I know what you mean but just to clarify, you said step with a heel but do you mean pivot off of the ball of the foot?
Yes, pivot as you would pivot a kick. The power goes from your foot, springs through your knees, the hip should twist as you snap your blow.
A bird and fly use a surface to push of to fly. A fly with four feet on a surface is slower that if it has all six legs on a surface.
Thought everyone knew this?
It's good to review though
An excellent video. So far the best explanation I've seen on the body mechanics of punching. Arigato Sensei. I will share this.
Osu ....
Всё ясно, чтобы ударить сильнее, надо взять длинную палку.
Eloquent.
How can I get the music at the beginning?
It will be a completely original opening music.
Not anywhere.
I totally know that this person is a true master and I don't mean to be disrespectful, but his punches in the into aren't faster than mine and I am untrained in martial arts. I am sure those punches have devastating power but shouldn't he be lightning fast as well?
Osu
これは松濤館の突き方と全く同じである。この人は腰を回して突いている。沖縄古伝の空手では腰は絶対に回さない。これでは日本本土のスポーツ化した空手と変わらない。このやり方は武道では無い。
To much talk...
You Ruin the video playing that Trash noisy-music !!!
Dude, drop the stupid music.
