    My master always said: A good punch is like a building: you need a solid foundation to build on. A punch starts from the feet, then through the legs, hips and then the upper body follows.

      Yeah, when I first practised Karate, my instructor and seniors made me to practised kiba dachi for a whole week. Then the next week I practised zenkutsu dachi and how to move in zenkutsu dachi. I wasn't taught how to throw a single punch until my basic stances were somewhat acceptable. Stances are crucial for any kind of striking

      @LeefromCalgary I don't think so. Unlike old styles, modern gyms have many tools to train specific muscles, they also has specific schedules for conditioning, technique training and sparring so stable stances will come eventually. Old schools don't have that much equipment so you must have it from the beginning and the training process will only further enhance it

    A nearly 7 min video which could be summed up with: Have a solid base and don't simply muscle your punches. Basic basic stuff....but important!

    I am glad that Karate in Okinawa is not rooted in stone. Ippei-sensei does not ignore and ‘denounce’ modern techniques and how we can evolve this fighting art.

    No unnecessary movement, no unnecessary power should be applied to the beautiful form of Okinawa Karate
    A very good advice. And it isn't just about Karate, every other martial arts have this principle, it's just the sport aspect of many of them made the athletes forget this, either it is sport Karate athlete over-extending themselves to get a point or boxer swinging wildly and hurting their hands in exchange of a K.O

    No matter how strong your punch is, you have as much knockout chances as you have precision and timing. Of course, it's important (and fun) to develop a powerful punch, but people often overlook the fact that most of that so called "knockout power" doesn't come from the power of the punch itself, but from being in the right place at the right time.

  • @dougguard1
    @dougguard1 3 года назад

    This guy is very solid strong. Those super powerful wiry guys really impress me. Mostly Okinawan styles. Evidently, easier for 140 pound to maximize strength over lets say 210 pounds plus to get to maximize punch.

  • @thirdstarspiritscholar5763

    If you punch from a square position, your arm is not fully extended. It's much harder to reach your opponent, especially if they are taller and have longer arms. Keep feet parallel step with your heal closest to your opponent (step sideways). You create more range, more cover, and present a smaller target, with full extension of your arm and you body behind your blow.

    • @kbanghart
      @kbanghart 3 года назад

      I think I know what you mean but just to clarify, you said step with a heel but do you mean pivot off of the ball of the foot?

    • @thirdstarspiritscholar5763
      @thirdstarspiritscholar5763 3 года назад

      Yes, pivot as you would pivot a kick. The power goes from your foot, springs through your knees, the hip should twist as you snap your blow.
