We drove up Friday and stayed at Tuba City, then went and did the morning tour of Blue Canyon. Our guide, Micah seemed pretty flexible with his tours. You can do a full or half day and talk to him about what you want to see. He also does tours of the Hopi villages and some petroglyphs nearby but we didn't have time; we drove straight from here to Petrified Forest and backpacked that Sat/Sun. Coal Mine Canyon is right up there too. The inside of it is Hopi land (up on the rim is Navajo). If you book a tour for Blue Canyon, you might also be able to get a tour inside Coal Mine too. It's very unique and completely different from Blue Canyon. Not sure if tours are allowed in there though, but it can't hurt to ask. Or at least get a permit from the Navajo nation and check out some overlooks at Coal Mine while you're up there.
Once again, thanks for this. Just made confirmation with Micah for a private tour in a month to coincide with my trip to The Wave and White Pocket. I am so.freakin.excited.
Pretty sure that's where we stayed. It was really nice and I highly recommend it. And that sounds like a great itinerary. You will have a blast. If you have time, I recommend going up Wire Pass and Buckskin for a bit while you're at the Wave.
@@JerryArizona we went back the next day to do Wire Pass to Buckskin and it was so much fun. LOVED the petroglyphs at the junction. What an awesome trip: The Wave, White Pocket, Slot canyons and finished out the week with Micah in Blue Canyon. Just insane!
Thank you very much for the very informative videos. I just spent a week in Arizona/Utah and now I have a reason to return back …if not this year, most probably next.
I stumbled upon the Wash bicycling from Moab to Flagstaff over 20 years ago. Was utterly astounded but didn't have a camera like yours to record it. Got some good slides.
The first link doesn't work so I went to the second one, hit Hopi Tours and the link for the PDF of tours and pricing doesn't work. Bummer. I would love to have used your guide for this year's bucket list, well, last big vacay even though AZ is home for me. Blue canyon looks incredible!
I've been meaning to go back, but I have the same problem when I try to find a guide. I just saw a few people posting pictures though, so I know there are guides out there somewhere. Just not sure how to find them. Maybe see if you can get a number for the Hopi Tribe's tourist office (if there is such a thing) and ask them? If I figure it out, I'll try to provide an update.
Hey Jerry, good video as always. Hopefully we can start seeing some more 4k content on your channel! You're producing some great content and have a good way of presenting. Just a suggestion for hikes... Have you joined HikeAZ? That place is an INCREDIBLE wealth of information for trails and discovering something different. Keep it man, good stuff!
Not a member, but I've looked at it plenty of times. Strangely enough, my favorite source is Todd Martin's blog. Old and not updated, but tons of info. I'm probably not going to step up to 4k until I get a new computer. Mine chokes on that stuff. Last export I tried in 4k took over 30 hours. Always fun to do that and then play it out and see a graphics error on your title....So 1080 for now.
@@JerryArizonaI'll have to check out Martin's blog. Yeah, I have heard 4K content can take some time to export, not to mention horrendous file sizes... 1080/2160 (whatever it is) you're producing some good stuff!
Ha! Tina's a nurse and I'm an engineer. We live in a great area where plenty of incredible hikes are within reasonable driving distance and our jobs are fairly flexible on PTO and days off.
Jerry, I’m really digging your videos! Glad I found your channel. Hope to travel to the southwest next year for photography trip. Using your videos to help with “to do” list. Very well edited and music fits perfectly. BTW…are the soundtracks in this one from an artist album? Info please if you don’t mind.
Glad you enjoy. Any questions, just ask. The music is all from Epidemic Sound; it's a place you can pay a monthly subscription to use their songs commercially. The whole licensing thing is a nightmare otherwise. Epidemic is great though and make it really easy. Not sure how you can listen if you don't have the subscription though.
Thanks for another item for the bucket list. The web link says Coming Soon like it might be under construction. Under Trip Advisor there is a listing for Hopi Tours and Micah and Gary Tso are named in some of the comments. There is a phone number listed so maybe that's the only way right now to contact Micah. Do you think a drone could be flown at Blue Canyon since it's so remote???
I had our drone, but Micah said it was not allowed. I just tried the link we used and it shows 404 not found. I'll put some additional info in the description after I post this (found his name/number on experiencehopi.com), but since I haven't tried it, I can't confirm if it will work or not.
Damn pandemic... had to cancel three trips to Blue Canyon and unfortunately one of the guides we had lined up fell victim to COVID. So, do you have the name of your helpful guide? The link in the video is no longer valid. Thanks!
Unfortunately, no. I don't have any other contact info. But check the second link I put in the description. It gives a list of guides and includes Micah with a phone # and e mail. Not sure if they're still valid, but you can try.
Finally, after trying for 6 years we secured a guide to take us into Blue & Coal Mine Canyon! Any hints for additional sights in the area! Many Thanks!
We actually backpacked into the north part of Petrified Forest to camp. Coal Mine Canyon overlook (Navajo Nation permit required) is also another good campground in the area and you can car camp it.
This is Waterslide (Tribute Version) Instrumental by Loving Caliber. It's from a music service I pay for to get licensed music for my videos called Epidemic Sound.
experiencehopi.com/authorized-hopi-guides/ Try that link. He's listed under "Hopi Tours" and they give a phone # and e mail. Not sure if they're still valid (it's been a while), but there are other guides listed if not.
I keep trying to visit Blue Canyon but every pace i call tells me they dont do tours to Blue Canyon because it’s washed out. I really want to go and am trying to plan a visit specifically to see Blue Canyon.
Try the website I put in the description. Looks like it may not have shown up as a link so you may have to retype it. The guide's name is Micah. He was great. The road may have washed out since we were there; I'm not sure. But he would know conditions. And could probably give you an idea when it would be reopened.
We backpacked and camped in Petrified Forest National Park on this trip. Really short backpack, maybe 1 mile? But you can also camp at the Coal Mine Canyon Campground which is closer and has a nice overlook. Blue Canyon requires a Hopi guide and Coal Mine requires a permit from the Navajo Nation. I'm pretty sure neither are issuing permits or allowing tours right now due to COVID though.
Thanks! Waterslide by Loving Caliber. (There are two versions; this is the acoustical one.) I get all my music through a place called Epidemic Sound. Not sure how you can get it without a subscription.
The rock formations. They were so unique. Hadn't wanted to do this trip for a while because we normally don't like guided stuff, but Micah was great. It was really interesting to learn about the Hopi culture and the history of the area as well. Unfortunately, I'm not sure the link to contact him works anymore and I'm not sure if they are currently doing tours because of COVID. If I could do it over, I think I would go when there were better clouds and plan for around sunset for better pictures. Micah mentioned he also did tours of the nearby Hopi village which I think would be interesting. Maybe camp at the Coal Mine Canyon overlook afterward.
The Blue Canyon is well known in Germany, don't know why. i've been there two times in 2009 and 2011. Got a permit at the visitor center in Cameron, the Hopis where not interested in guiding at that time. ruclips.net/video/oczhaOALsHQ/видео.html
We did not camp on the reservation. The only drinks we had on the rez were the coffee in the opening and water. In retrospect, I wish I had clarified that. Unfortunately, it did not occur to me that might not be clear when I made the video.
