Not the 1st time you've gotten master George to open up... Thanx Tom, this wuz brilliant... Is there anyone else this savvy about guitars and all their nuances?
Not on THIS earth…theres a helluva lotta folks that THINK they are but this fella started it all…there are some that are this knowledgeable about certain small parts of vintage instrument culture but none who’s knowledge is as vast and complete as george
501chorusecho you could ask 500 knowledgeable guitar folks about the Les Paul. George is the only one who would tie in the fact Les Paul got his elbow set so it affected whatever. LoL
Tom, you could definitely have another career as an interviewer. Your personality just puts people at ease and you seem to know the right leading questions. Then you sit back and let them tell their story. Thanks for including us on your hangouts with people like George Gruhn, Greg Voros and Jedd Hughes.
He seems to have a very natural, sincere curiosity that endears him to people. It is the same thing when he is interviewed. He asks questions of his interviewer as well and it turns into a conversation.
Not to take anything away from dear ol’ Uncle Larry, (who wouldn’t want to talk music with the Buk?) but George Gruhn is not exactly one to be at a loss for words!
The questions are interesting and challenging and fun for the interviewees. I love the interaction between the guys here and the respect shown. The level of expertise that's been opened up to us with homeskoolin is just off the scale. Thanks Tom.
These long form q&a’s are the bread and butter. Thanks for taking the time to share your wisdom and the wisdom of those around you, who are the cream of the crop.
George's pessimism makes him happier more of the time than the optimsts.🤪😂😅🤣 Best words of wisdom I've ever heard.👌 Fantastic interview Tom. Thank you George.🤙
Little Tommy, this content is awesome! George Gruhn is a national treasure! Thanks so much for this; your ability to ask the questions we all would want to ask if given the opportunity is unparalleled! I had to set time aside to watch this in its entirety. Seriously, thank you!!
Hey Uncle Larry, Back in the day Toni Iommi played Stalwart custom "old boys" SG style guitars. His new stuff is the "new boys" still Stalwart custom "SG" style. But he also used Strats, until he broke a string and had an SG as a backup. So the SG became his #1
George is most generous with his time, knowledge and wisdom. Visited Gruhn's about 3 years ago. I got to go upstairs and to play a bunch of fine (expensive) guitars that I was not going to be buying. George came by and suggested that we take a few into a private room off the floor. He followed us in and spent the next hour or so shooting the breeze. A great honor and privilege to get to experience such cool time with such a great man.
You know what one of the best thing about these videos is, every time I watch one I'm compelled to pick up the guitar, record something and play for hours.
Not only does this bring me immense joy just to watch and listen, but I think this is so incredibly important to document from a historical point of view. THANK YOU for sharing this!
Best Gruen interview ever. People wandering in and out of the break room, you don’t rush George, you let him develop a thought. Very organic. Way to go Uncle Larry!
Tom, I met Les in 1978. After his 2-man show w/drummer at Grinnell's music store in Southfield Mi, the kid behind me in line brought an SG for Les to sign with his engraving pencil. Les went into a rant with the EXACT complaints George listed! He added "this is the guitar I quit Gibson over." Now, his bitterness could have had lots of other unrelated reasons, but his disdain of the SG was technical.
Loved the part where George talked about Bloomfield. I got into Bloomfield later and never really heard of him before. Only later days I’ve understood what impact he had and hearing someone like George talk about him the way he does really hits home. Thanks!
A very pleasant video with some great guys just chilling and chatting. I think the story is that Tony Iommi originally went to John Birch for help with getting the red SG Special to stay in tune and to stop it buzzing. That resulted in the chrome covered p90 in the bridge and the JB single coil with all the extra polepieces in the neck, and the Schaller bridges that make up the "Red Monkey" guitar. John Birch then made the black SG for Tony Iommi around the time of Technical Ecstasy with the JB Hyperflux/Magnum humbucking pickups and the cross inlays, 24 frets and stainless steel scratchplate that went into the Dio era. John Diggins worked for John Birch and made an SG out-of-hours which became the "Old Boy" and when he went solo as JayDee guitars made various custom SGs for Tony Iommi in the 80s and 90s. Lots to read about online if you have a Google of course. As mentioned in other comments, John Birch also made and customised guitars for other UK rock artists including modding a Telecaster and SG for Noddy Holder of Slade, various guitars for Dave Hill of Slade (including a white SG, a red SG and the SuperYob guitar) and basses for Jim Lea of Slade, a copy of the Red Special for Brian May of Queen (seen in the "We Will Rock You" video) and various other customs that you see on British music telly from the 70's from time to time like Top Of The Pops. JayDee also went on to make basses in the 80's for Mark King of Level 42 and an SG for Angus Young. If you want to see a really unusual modded guitar in an unexpected band, check out Eric Faulker's Stratocaster when he was in the Bay City Rollers. Loads of grainy photos and fuzzy videos available but not many closeups. White body with a competition stripe with a PAF in the neck, a Wide Range HB in the middle and the original strat pickup remaining in the bridge. Two switches, which I guess are both three-ways doing the Hamer-type switching that was on the first Steve Stevens models. Early shots show a big headstock maple neck and white scratchplate, later the neck is rosewood and scratchplate black. A fascinating guitar and there are a few live concert recordings out there that probably demonstrate what it sounded like more than the big hit records did.
Good to the last drop! Thanks to everyone involved for their contributions to the discussions and most especially for the wit and wisdom of George Gruhn. It’s 2:20am and I’m buzzed after watching this gem.
Great chat with George! My son is running the LA Marathon right now and wearing his original Green Homeskoolin T shirt. Representing the 501ChorusEcho, Homeskoolin and the NEO crowd!!
great clip. lot of great insight. thanks for capturing this, keepin it goin, sharing guitar stuffs & in particular, getting some good footage of the photographer, she's beautiful!.. her smile tho 😍😍😍
Unbelievable. I looked at the time stamp on the thumbnail and thought to myself “this is going to be a multiple parts viewing, can’t afford that much time right now, too much to do, but I’ll just peek in for a few minutes…” ended up watching the whole thing in one sitting, wanting more. Incredibly interesting conversation, loved it! Thanks uncle Larry and the Gruhn’s team!
an extremely rare opportunity to actually ( or virtually) spend some quality time with a legend...thanks for that...and on another note - stuck in a massive traffic jam yesterday, but I had my secret weapon - Plexi Soul...the car may have been crawling, but the tunes inside were rocking along...killer record TB...thanks.
What a great dissertation! I loved the entire interview. George not only knows his guitars but he understands the laws of supply and demand. Great questions Uncle Larry!
George has so much knowledge and experience....we need to record as many of his words as we can while we still have him. History will be better for it.
Epic video ,agree with a few others that Tony Iommi did use John Birch guitars built in the Midlands UK ,also I think the builder of some of the crazy guitars played by Slade and Wizard, again Midlands orientated bands
Great vid!! Thanks Uncle Larry for the total history lesson/interview with George. I was fortunate to get to Gruhn just the week before this was shot while visiting Nashville - what a fantastic shop.
Unbelievable, what treats you're giving us at the moment, Tom! To be able to sit in on this conversation is amazing. Words of wisdom all round. Thank you. 😎
I've been watching you forever Tommy and I never saw this video when you first posted 11 months ago but God damn it's like having a conversation with George in the room. He is dropping so much knowledge this stuff is almost documentary worth type of videography.... I know I might be 49 years old but I need to get the hell out of yours and come to Nashville while I still got some years left because I could serve somebody well as a studio dude
I could listen to Mr Gruhn ALL DAY LONG!!! I wrote him a letter in the 80s when I was a pimply teen (asking about TV Juniors) and he replied, he's good people!! Great video, Uncle Larry. 🙏
I met George at a guitar show years ago (before he blew up)... my first electric was a Guild Starfire V - still have it - George liked it but I couldn't let go of it... and glad I didn't. (The guy across the way at the show who told me to take it to George for his appraisal said, "if George likes a guitar, keep it!") Great interview - put this interview in the Smithsonian! Way to go Uncle Lars!
Thank you so very, very much for this amazing conversation with such a legend. What a wonderful person. Uncle Larry your generosity is such a wonderful thing.
George is really a smart man, indeed… I could listen to him talk about stuff for hours. Tom I can see how he has influenced you… you both have great insight on guitar related stuff. Greg Voros is a man of great knowledge as well, I’ve learned a lot from you all by watching these videos. RUclips’s best kept secret, for now. Lol Thanks for this great video Tom! ✌️ ✊
Ha. Every time someone makes a statement, the venerable Gruhn opens up yet another layer. His guitar knowledge is Inception-like :) Worlds upon worlds.
Holy cow I could listen to this all day. He was there for the electric guitar takeover. Aaaaannd I just purchased an SG w/ P90’s. Sold one on consignment in ‘20 at Gruhn’s and missed it horribly. Got sucked back in!!!
We need more George bonus footage! What a sweet, no Bullsh*t, brilliant man! Yall are awesome. Homeskoolin Inspires and improves my day! And youd be a great rock n roll journalist Sir Uncle Larry!
30 year old dude from germany here and I have to say: Above all your great output Tom I love this kind of videos the most I think. I feel like sitting right there. I can hardly imagine a more beautiful hour on midday than accompany this round of awesome people. My attention span thirsts for more, really ;) Again thanks for everything. I think I love you xD
As if this channel couldn’t be better with the incredible playing tips. Then these long form ‘real talk’ videos come along and they’re just as amazing in a different way. You’re capturing the good stuff on this channel.
Damn, didn’t really want that to end. I agree with other comments…I think you could easily spin off a career as a long form talk show host. Great stuff dude.
Tom, that is the greatest video with George and the other guys! Would love to see more, maybe a monthly segment with George’s knowledge of history of stringed instrument manufacturers. This video makes me want to jump in the car, drive down and just go hang out at Gruhn’s with George for a few days. HaHa, great stuff!
Half way through and I'm loving this, man George has forgotten more about guitars then ill ever know. He comes across as such a measured, knowledgeable human being, very cool indeed 😎😎👍👍
What a joy to witness such an insider view of such expert masters. Thank you. I found this episode absolutely fascinating and I don’t even play. Just a music fan from Boston who hopes to meet Uncle Larry someday.
Amazing conversation, so cool to sit in and learn from you guys! Thanks for doing this, and thanks to everyone who participates and shares in your videos. What a cool community
That Les Paul/Mary Ford popularity joke "Just like mine..." made me literally laugh out loud. You're the fuckin man, Uncle Larry. Never change, brother. We all love you!
Not the 1st time you've gotten master George to open up...
Thanx Tom, this wuz brilliant...

@@501chorusecho Yeah the economic aspect is an instant course in what's what, not only w/ guitars neither
...thanx again
Excellent video UL! The luthier knowledge and economics of the musical instruments was golden! All 108mins ☮️
501chorusecho you could ask 500 knowledgeable guitar folks about the Les Paul. George is the only one who would tie in the fact Les Paul got his elbow set so it affected whatever. LoL

I concur, our dear uncle has a nice unassuming style and let’s the interviewee go without interrupting
He seems to have a very natural, sincere curiosity that endears him to people. It is the same thing when he is interviewed. He asks questions of his interviewer as well and it turns into a conversation.
100% agree.
Not to take anything away from dear ol’ Uncle Larry, (who wouldn’t want to talk music with the Buk?) but George Gruhn is not exactly one to be at a loss for words!

“He had a 57 strat, and 4x10 bassman…..AND a chord, that’s it.” There’s nothing i love more than hearing a man tell old stories.
Are you kidding me? Even a virtual seat at this table is amazing. So glad everyone is ok with having video going.
These long form q&a’s are the bread and butter. Thanks for taking the time to share your wisdom and the wisdom of those around you, who are the cream of the crop.

I have watched this from beginning to end and held on to every word...this conversation was so educational and enlightening... Thank you Uncle Larry.
Worth it just for the Vega banjo story. That shows the humanity and integrity of George Gruhn.
A tour of his collection would be absolutely incredible.

We are now addicted. We now need a steady supply of longform Uncle Larry content.
Best Gruen interview ever. People wandering in and out of the break room, you don’t rush George, you let him develop a thought. Very organic. Way to go Uncle Larry!
Priceless! A tour of George's guitars would be the same.
