I've tried so many times to like Black Metal and it just isn't happening. I love elements of Black Metal in other genres, but pure Black Metal...meh. I will still listen to this record because I value your opinions. Maybe one day you will review a Black Metal metal album that turns me on to the genre. You've already reviewed albums that I've been listening to on repeat and are going to make my end of year lists. Mainly Alcerate, Pallbearer (new album made my top albums of all time, any genre), and 200 Stab Wounds. I'm sure I'm forgetting something.
Killer record, like the artwork saw them live, the singer/guitarist is a shredder 🤘🔥

Necrotic Nick- It's a tough call at this point for me because The Great Below was such an awesome album. Bare minimum I can say this band is 3 for 3 with albums so far. Everything they've dropped has been sick so far.
I am kind of where Jon is at with Black Metal - Haven’t listened to a ton it over the years, but getting more into it lately. Definitely going to give this a listen and also keep going back to the classic Black Metal bands and albums that everyone says are mandatory listening. Great review as always fellas.
Necrotic Nick- Thanks, man! He's slowly starting to get an appreciation for the style over the course of the channel's existence. He used to be super opposed to covering black metal but now he's down for it. I figured showing him the riffier stuff was the way to go and generally that's what I recommend as gateways into it. Riffs are diplomatic because regardless where you go in metal you'll find them. Once you get used to the sound a lot of the stuff that you didn't get before starts to make sense.
Sounds cool. Ive been jamming The Great Below in the Gym today and its some killer thrashy Black metal. Im defo gonna be checking out this one, so great review again fellas!..On a side note, have you heard the new Fulci track? If its anything to go by, their next album will fucking crush!
Necrotic Nick- Thanks, man! The Great Below is such a banger. I was a big fan of the debut but that follow up cemented my fandom. This band has such a great balance of different black metal tropes I love but the main thing that brings me back are the riffs. This band has riffs for days. Dude! That new Fulci track rips! I may just do a pre-order for that one.
I’m not a big black metal guy, but I like what a heard so far. And I liked what I heard before with their other albums. Hawk Tuah metal!!😂
Necrotic Nick- Honestly, there's a lot more to their sound than just black metal and these guys are great when it comes down to melodic guitar hooks. The "Hawk Tuah" is everywhere lol
it was about as good as the new Alcest for me, which is in the highest order of compliments. hell yeah black metal!
Necrotic Nick- I'm still not much of an Alcest fan but I dig the hell out of this band. All 3 of their albums are bangers in my opinion.
This album kicks ass. I think I like it more than their last.

I'll check this band out especially that new release I actually know of Kvaen but I haven't listened to them just yet.

Seeing these guys explode in popularity and get signed by Metal Blade is so awesome to see, and for their MB debut, they absolutely CRUSHED it.

This new Kvaen release reminded me of the great Varathron album from last year; not so much musically, but that Varathron album had the same kind of variety of expression from track to track, that Kvaen also excels in on this new one. 🤘👌
Necrotic Nick- A little bit. I got more Dissection and Melchesh but in terms of the variety from track to track I can definitely get behind that comparison to Varathron.
Not only are the riffs and song arrangements top notch, but I really dig the production and mix, it fires off on all levels, the new OV SHADOWS is similar and I love it but it's not quite mixed as well as this album is! 8/10 for me, SOLID!
Necrotic Nick- Yeah, sonically this album is huge and I love all the layered guitars on this one. The lead harmonies are gorgeous and pretty much every song is chock full of sick riffs. Kvaen are 3 for 3 in my book.
