I was playin' bass (keyboards my primary) on the road in a funk cover band in Albuquerque, NM in '79ish, when Chester Thompson, Emilio Castillo, Doc Kupka & Dave Garibaldi walked in after their gig at the University. Before we knew it, horn cases were opening, Chester took the keyboard, and we jammed (switching in & out) on this beauty & a couple other grooves for the better part of an hour. His percussion-like attack & gospel-ish chording influenced my own playing heavily since.Talk about a player's wet dream, and a memory I'll never forget. This night was my nirvana.
I remember Chester with Tower of Power back in the day when this song was first released. Later I saw him with Santana in Houston....what a show. Roger Smith replaced CT in ToP but CT will always be my favorite on the Hammond B3. He peels the ivory off the keys.
YEEEEAAH!!!!!! Now That's The True Essence Of The Tower Of Power That Made Me Want To Play That Music One Day When I Grow Up!!!!!!! It's really great to hear Howard & Barry in this setting too!!!
"Squib Cakes" yea that would make anyone sweat! Chester, thanks for that great performance and that great jam tune!!! "Squib Cakes" is a "standard" now!!!
@funkfize Chester Thompson - your hero - is so fantastic on Wolfie's Vault, and on the direct lathed stuff, if you can get good tone off that recording - let alone Chester on a board tape first-generation was overwhelming (c 81, several of his own tunes in set) The Tower made giant stage tone with this cat in the club - inescapable, in every corner - confrimed by cassette
This version of Chester's 'Squib Cakes' has been mixed and mastered and will appear on his new release 'Mixology' from Doodlin' Records scheduled to hit the streets December 11th.
thank you someone for bringing an RCA 77 to the stand and setting it in front of the sax man - and if the saxman totes that thing to his shows, then he acts as hip as he plays
As a bassist I´m principally against organists playing bass with their feet, soundwise and workwise. That said, this was one of the most swinging things I´ve ever heard! Nice work!
Yes I believe traditionally it was used as a device to avoid having to hire a bass player on gigs! One to make the bass playing union angry back in the 60's and 70's.
Boogie Beck with a fantastic kit drum tone, incl snare miked with the unit that Lenny Williams used to sing into! What the hell is that mic, a Sennheiser, and why do cats in the Bay Area use that bitch? My god it sounds great - Mr Beck like Sanders Bartlett did well in the famous DG drum chair
Chester Thompson is great Hammond organist , kind of underrated. His work with Santana live is outstanding
Absolutely agree!
