Barbara Dennerlein & Rhoda Scott on Hammond B3 Organ

  • Can you handle this much organ? We are used to guitarists like Duane Allman and Dickey Betts, or Derek Trucks and Warren Haynes mixing it up, but Rhoda Scott and Barbara Dennerlein prove that instrumental music isn't just a man's world.
This impromptu performance took place in Switzerland in 2002 at the Bern Jazz Festival, bringing together two legends of the Hammond B3 Organ - the 5 time Downbeat Critics Poll Winner Barbara Dennerlein and the great Soul Jazz artist Rhoda Scott, a.k.a. "Barefoot Lady" - called a very great virtuoso by Arthur Rubinstein.
For Dennerlein fans this is a bit unusual, because Barbara isn't playing pedal bass. This number "Nova" was composed by Rhoda, an accomplished pedal bass player herself, so she provides the bass lines.
Not only are they smoking hot soloists, but check out the great interplay, harmonics, and accompaniment.

The legendary Rhoda Scott plays the organ like someone singing with passion and excitement. Mellow at one stage and vibrant at another. She for me is a musical treasure.

The Hammond organ is one of the finest and sweetest instruments every to be fashioned. It will be a long time before anything tops it. Under the control of a master it can be made to do a tremendous lot.

Barbara has got that Euro sophistication and man can she work the bass pedals like no one else. Barbara should be consider a jazz great at this point.

You don't have to look at the video, you don't even have to listen to the different approaches to improvisation that they both take ... you can instantly tell them apart by the different sounds they get out of the drawbar settings of the Hammond. Just stunning.

Also want to congratulate the marvelous drummer who was always just there and just perfectly right, he also added a nice element of mature coolness to the gorgeous ladies! Normally I hate the Hammond but this has really opened my eyes!! BRAVO to you all, Adrian in Bermuda ❤️💕💕💕

This performance just sounds and feels so good. It swings so hard. And I am not sure why the Hammond B3/leslie sound has disappeared so much from music but it needs to come back. So many rock bands in the 60's and 70's used that sound also.

Then you get the teenie bopper Justin Beiber fans who got lost and wound up here. You have some who just want to crank people like you up and thumbs down all the masterpieces they see to draw out your statements of incredulity (they are the ones with no meaning to their lives). Lastly, you get the idiots who can't take the time to appreciate anything but porn.
