- Can you handle this much organ? We are used to guitarists like Duane Allman and Dickey Betts, or Derek Trucks and Warren Haynes mixing it up, but Rhoda Scott and Barbara Dennerlein prove that instrumental music isn't just a man's world.
This impromptu performance took place in Switzerland in 2002 at the Bern Jazz Festival, bringing together two legends of the Hammond B3 Organ - the 5 time Downbeat Critics Poll Winner Barbara Dennerlein and the great Soul Jazz artist Rhoda Scott, a.k.a. "Barefoot Lady" - called a very great virtuoso by Arthur Rubinstein.
For Dennerlein fans this is a bit unusual, because Barbara isn't playing pedal bass. This number "Nova" was composed by Rhoda, an accomplished pedal bass player herself, so she provides the bass lines.
Not only are they smoking hot soloists, but check out the great interplay, harmonics, and accompaniment.
The legendary Rhoda Scott plays the organ like someone singing with passion and excitement. Mellow at one stage and vibrant at another. She for me is a musical treasure.
YES!!!
The Hammond organ is one of the finest and sweetest instruments every to be fashioned. It will be a long time before anything tops it. Under the control of a master it can be made to do a tremendous lot.
Barbara has got that Euro sophistication and man can she work the bass pedals like no one else. Barbara should be consider a jazz great at this point.
OMG! Just discovered this. Both these women have amazing chops! And their interplay is awesome. Dueling B3’s!! Made my day fo sho. Thank you Barbara and Rhoda … 🎶 🙏
Music really is a language. What a great thing it is to see a conversation like this here between them.
I definitely agree with you with two remarkable ladies.
Never get tired of listening to this prodigious piece of art!
Those two artists wrung more out of their organs in one song than most people wring out of their entire lives.
AWESOME !!!!
What an awesome sound these two ladies get with those tonewheel organs and those Leslies! They're both incredibly talented, but Barbara is incredible!
Wish I could see either one of them live.
You don't have to look at the video, you don't even have to listen to the different approaches to improvisation that they both take ... you can instantly tell them apart by the different sounds they get out of the drawbar settings of the Hammond. Just stunning.
To hear two of the greatest jazz organists in history together. What a treat for the eyes and ears.
These women were **cookin'**!!!
What cretins gave this AWESOME performance a thumbs down??!!
It's opinion ,relax Francis
Straordinario, nonchè stupefacente duetto di due Grandi Artiste!!
Talkshow ohne Worte, Kommunikation auf höchstem Niveau, Vorstoß zur Seele der Musik
Barbara and Rhoda im just speechless. out of this world.
Absolutely heavenly. Barbara does it for me.
D'un duo, Rhoda en fait un duel. Barbara s'en sort avec les honneurs.Bravo Barbara.
Superlative ladies, just wonderful, only wish I’d have seen more of the shoeless pedal playing, stunning. Also want to congratulate the marvelous drummer who was always just there and just perfectly right, he also added a nice element of mature coolness to the gorgeous ladies! Normally I hate the Hammond but this has really opened my eyes!! BRAVO to you all, Adrian in Bermuda ❤️💕💕💕
I just came across Barbara recently, and way too late sad to say, but I've watched this video about 10 times today. I can't get enough. These two women are so talented. Interesting how Rhoda plays with bare feet. Love this piece.
DITTO!!!!!!!
I listen forthy mouths ago and just cant stop can back to listen again.
Two fabulous female Jazz Organists of our time!!!
Jimmy Smith lived ONE MILE from us and we did not know it!!!!!RIP and joy and a B3!!!

This performance just sounds and feels so good. It swings so hard. And I am not sure why the Hammond B3/leslie sound has disappeared so much from music but it needs to come back. So many rock bands in the 60's and 70's used that sound also.
A big disadvantage of the leslie in concert is that it can't work well with a PA
@@exoticcar5482 wouldn't two microphones work well enough?

Listening this for years. I'll never get tired of it I presume.
Oh my god... These fine and lovely ladies really ROCKS. This is real soulfull music like only with a hammond organ can be played. God bless them...
My kind of music...being an organist myself, I can appreciate and love this style that these great ladies play. They put a smile on my face, and I can listen to them all day. Great work Barbara and Rhoda. You complement one another very well, and kudos to the drummer, as well. Hard to believe this was posted over 9 years ago.
Hey, sorry for interrupt you but, could you give me any tips on where I can find on internet free ''jazz sheet music for organ''? Pleaseeeeeeeeeee!
I keep coming back to watch this. All of three of them are just magic. One of the best ever examples of "cool" Hammond.
playing myself I appreciate the artistry especially her footwork. OUTSTANDING
15 years of coming back to this video
Me transporta a tantos lugares y me hace sentir feliz el sonido característico de este organo.
La interpretación es magnífica de estas excelentes damas.
We Had the chance to have Mrs Scott playing on our organists instrument. Also Mr Simetaine on the drums is the real deal!!! Unbelievably inspiring musicians here !!!
Barbara the best in skill an time but Rhoda is the master of sermony! Greatest play from both.
Lucky Drummer ....playing with two beautiful women and two fabulous musicians ...my dream gig !!
I love this music rhythm. And the sound of the Hammond B3 organ is marvelous
I must have heard this a hundred times and am still listening..
As a B3 player, I enjoyed these ladies so much.
Beautiful. I saw Rhoda live once at Lincoln Center. Her bare left foot was bouncing off the bass pedals like no one I've seen before or since.Very dynamic walking/running bass lines, and I'm a bass player. The camera caught a very brief clip of her pedal work. Thanks for posting.
Not to mention how pretty her toes are, lol
I used to think that piano players were the geniuses of the music world, but clearly organists out do the best piano players.
This was big fun. Two girls battling on their keyboards. Both are great musicians.
I nearly threw my slipper at my computer screen, I can't take it!!! (who are the 60 reerees with the thumbs down..smh) This was AWESOME!!!
They are tone deaf!
I listened to that delightful organ in the 90s and it still sizzles
THESE LADIES MAKES A WORLD OF MUSIC!!! AWESOME! PEACE&BLESSINGS

My dad loved Barbara Dennerlein...!

Beyond smoking! Crawling all over those Hammonds and cute as.buttons! 20 cool points. 😎
⭐⭐⭐🎼🎼🎼😊🤗🤩💖💞💗

*Rhoda Scott* was born 1937 in New Jersey USA, and issued her first album in 1962 on the Prestige label. She moved to France in 1967, and has been based there since. *Barbara Dennerlein* was born 1964 in Munich, and issued her first album in 1983. Two years later she started her own label.

I like it when Barbara flips the switch after 1:56 and takes it to the next level.
Incredible performances! Thanks for posting this!
Tearing it up
Good music like this is hard to come by these days. This makes you want to turn it up, and tap your foot.
Once owned a Yamaha Electone B30R back in the 80's ..... this is absolutely amazing organ playing!
Nagyon régen hallottam de most rá akadtam! Gyönyörűséges!!
I always have to giggle a bit when I see thumbs down on this type of excellence. Are people that dumb?
Some have Parkinson's and accidentally hit the down button. Others don't have their glasses on. Some are easily confused and think the down button means they like it. Then you get the teenie bopper Justin Beiber fans who got lost and wound up here. You have some who just want to crank people like you up and thumbs down all the masterpieces they see to draw out your statements of incredulity (they are the ones with no meaning to their lives). Lastly, you get the idiots who can't take the time to appreciate anything but porn.
Taste has very little to do with intelligence, belive it or not.
Great performance and superb pedal bass. I need to practice much more !!!
I love the Hammond organ.Always have.And..I am in love with these two women.
