- Опубликовано: 11 дек 2024
- Recently purchased dash cam adapter for our Mazda CX-5. I believe this product is compatible with Mazda CX-5 (2017-2021) and CX-9 (2016-2021) models with frameless rearview mirrors. The adapter used in my video is for my frameless mirror, however if you've got the non-frameless with Homelink, you will need the '10-pin Type A' which I've also listed below. Feel free to comment if you have any questions. Cheers!

One year later your video still helping us mazda owners
Much appreciated! Stay safe out there Mazda fam :D
Has Mazda discovered dash cameras yet? It's 2022. We have cutting edge infotainment systems. But no USB port where we plug in dash cameras. Nope. We buy a kit & installation is DIY. Vehicles should be coming standard with dash cams now. At least make them an option on higher trims.
haha I totally agree with you on this one. This should be a default in todays world, but nope. Also, I guarantee that when this does become a feature, it'll be offered on the higher trims as part of a tech package costing your $1000 more 🤣
Please tell me one car manufacturer that provide usb port on top of windshield for dashcam? Thanks
@@fx3650 I think the people who design cars don't drive them or don't know what a dash camera is. I got mine installed but had to run the wire from the console to the top of the windshield.
In my brother’s Ford Raptor (Ranger) there is a USB port behind the mirror for easy plug in. With all the bad wrap Ford gets at least they thought of it. Mazda Dealer wanted $1800 to fit a camera. I said no.
Bravo on a great instructional video. I used some double sided foam tape to help attach the three new Dongar connectors to the base-plate on the glass side so they wouldn't rattle around. And FYI, if anyone who does this install happens to inflict some minor surface imperfections on the plastic clam-shell parts, just get a small piece of 600 grit or finer sandpaper and very gently 'kiss' the plastic with light strokes until the imperfections are buffed out.
Thanks Auto Minute for putting this together. I have wanted to add a simple dash cam for awhile now but am not very adventurous when it comes to messing with my car's wiring (still traumatized by a bad experience with an 8-track player and a '68 Camaro back in the 70's 🙂). Your step-by-step instructions on this video convinced me that I could do this without damaging the rest of my 2019 CX-9 GT. Getting the plastic housing off was a little more difficult than yours was and it took me a minute or two to find the clip to remove the 10-pin plug but all told it took about 15 minutes to install a Garmin 57 dash cam. The Dongar adapter works as advertised.
Hi Thomas, thank you for the kind words! "Wrenching" on your new car can definitely be a little nerve wrecking, especially when it comes to plastic tabs and electronics. Filming this was completely impromptu (as you can tell by my professional outfit ha!), but I'm truly happy that it's helped so many of my fellow Mazda folks out there. I'm trying to be more intentional in making videos that can be helpful moving forward :D - Cheers!
Thank you! Looks like a simple dyi project vs having to hide wires. And I appreciate you showing the complete information with all the steps
No problem! I'm glad this helped :D - Cheers! 🍻
Thank you sir. My homie was like pull the headliner down. I'm like no I spent way too much money on this car. This is way easier and I already have the tools. Thank you for making this video!
Appreciate it D.J.! I definitely spent some time scoping out the assembly before I made my moves lol
love the realness of this vid! :)
thank you! :D
This video was a lifesaver. Thank you for detailed walkthrough. Got my 2020 CX5 connected in minutes!
Sweeeeeeeet! Glad to help :)
Hi I use the CX-9 and it has the same big case near that rear view mirror. Just letting you know that there’s gap right at the bottom of that case for you to route the dash cam cable neatly and if you want to use the shorter cable you mentioned. :)
Ahhh...that thought crossed my mind for a split second during installation, but I assumed the cable couldn't fit thru the gap there and continued doing it the way seen here :D
Good to know that's possible and that it works for your CX9! thanks for your sharing that input Afham👍
I used Garmin products when I was flying. Quality gadgets.
Thanks for the info. Just bought a CX5 Turbo.
Appreciate the help.
Thanks for feedback! Garmin's can be expensive, but they make quality products indeed...and more importantly, congrats on the CX5 Turbo!
I just used the same approach with a shorter cable and it works great. Thank you for letting us know this small hack, greatly appreciated 👍🏻✌🏻
Appreciate it, glad this was helpful!
does it work for parking mode or do I need to hardwire it.
Same question ^
The second you turn your car on, it starts working until you completely stop the ignition
Hey there, thanks for your video. I was about to hard wire and came across your channel, bought the Dongar Technologies adapter not knowing if it would work on my 2023 Mazda CX-5 Carbon Edition but it works perfectly. Thank you once again.
Awesome man! I'm glad this helped you decide before going down the original route :D
Hi, sorry, do you know if the Carbon edition would be the same as the Homura? I get mine tomorrow.
@@mexicomatt212 I haven't heard of the "Homura" ...but if it's a '23 model year, then the same adapter I use here should work. Keep us posted!
@JoseHernandez-bf5fi Does the camera work when the car is parked and not in use? Or does it only get power when you turn on the car?
@@hkiajtaqks5253 Only gets power/turns on when car is on, if you want parking surveillance you would have to hardwire. In my case I don't need parking mode, this why it was a better option for me.
Thank you ! Great step by step and looks factory. I have a 2023 with the bulky non frameless mirror and it actually is the same connection has the frameless one used in this video.
Hi, sorry, is that a 2023 CX-5 Homura, by any chance?
Takumi :D ....but since I'm located in USA, it's just the "Signature"
thanks bro, this vid came in super clutch for my cx-5 gt when I installed a viofo
Awesome man, glad this helped out! :D
You can actually run the cable out from the bottom side of that plastic cover. There is a slot there thick enough to run the cable through. That way you can use the short cable they provide instead of having to bundle all the excess cable inside the cover.
You are absolutely correct sir. I have a Vantrue dashcam installed on my car now, but I ended up re-routing thru the bottom thanks to you guy's comments!
You can also put a hole in the plastic, and put a rubber grommet in the hole to make it look clean.
You're more ambitious than I am lol
thanks for the video bro didnt even know this adapter existed
Yessir! Thanks Trent.
NGL THIS IS WHAT I NEED AFTER WORK ILL INSTALL MY DASH CAM IN MY 2024 Mazda cx5
Ayeeeee good stuff! Lol
Great video, cheers from Australia
A very good explanation and Happy Easter greetings from England.
I too have a CX-5 2023 model. The coloured(English spelling sorry) tool can be acquired from the iFixit tool kit selections. I carry mine always because I use it quite often on a number of things.
Your method is one option for the dash cam but I need to go into the cabin fuse box for hardwiring as 'parked collisions' where the offender drives off, there's never enough charge in the dash cams on-board battery to capture the offender.
Ask me how I know? I had 7 occasions over a two-year period, where I had to pay the excess on my insurance to get it repaired.
The police were not interested, my landlord has a CCTV system installed but refused to hand over the data.
I have had to install my own CCTV wirelessly-linked to my phone and stored into the cloud on a monthly subscription. I can view 24/7 and not miss an event.
I could offer this as a surveillance service to my neighbours(English spelling sorry) but they and their visitors have hit my vehicle and driven off so that option is off the table!
There's the option of a OBDII adapter and my favourite(English spelling sorry) is a battery bank that is looped in between the USB port and the dash cam. I have a rear dash cam installed for rear collisions.
Oh! Supermarkets are the worst here in England. A lot of drunk/drugged drivers too!

Using this method, does the motion sensor work to record events in front while not using the car? At the moment, I have both my dashcams going to the main cigarette port using a dual USB pigtail. Looks clean and they turn on when car is powered on. Also, by the looks of it, there's lots of room to add a dual USB splitter under the plastic covers. I'd also have a use the adapter for home link.
Good job man. Very helpful.
Just FYI, I have a Mazda 6 and the white plug has a push button to open instead of a simple pull.
Appreciate it man 🤙...and as some folks already noted (which I missed), there's a gap right at the bottom of the panel to route the cable as well.
Just bought my mazda 3 and thank you sir ❤
No problem sir :D
Good Video - showing all the details of installation --- Thanks!
Appreciate it! 😎
Thanks for the video, a saw this and realize that this adaptor even exists. I have a a500s 70mai dashcam that i use in my old mazda 3 R with a complex instalation (my brain doesn't accept bad instalation or mistakes on my cars xd) and this video show me a new way. Yoy have in that mirror case (i have the same) a little spaces(?) in the bottom and yo can pass the cable right there. I think i have a new version of the adaptar that it has a longer cable in the usb section so it´s more easier instalation. I will do a video when my new camera arrived (a 810s 70mai with rear camera). Regards from Chile.
Appreciate it brother! Thanks for the feedback and funny you mention about the bottom of the plastic shroud because I did end up re-routing the cable thru there a few months later :D
Bro I feel you, I have 2022 signature myself ✌🏾
The new ones look even sleeker 🤙 Congrats!!
@@Auto-Minute Thanks man ✌🏾
I am going to get it. We have the same car. So timely to come across this video.
You could have filed a small notch in the lower side of the two part plastic cover and brought the cable out through the bottom. That's how my Mazda dealer did mine.
Hey Bob! You are correct. I could have routed it thru the bottom. It's something I learned about AFTER the fact 😓 whoops! Glad you got your setup dialed in 🤙
Totally awesome - thank you
I'm a bit late to the party. I decided not to go this route because I want power to be going to the camera at all times. I purchased an OBD 2 power connect instead and ran the wire uo the side and top of the windshield. I managed to tuck the cable in so it's not visible. That being said, great video!
Appreciate it 😎 ...and definitely the way to go if you want constant power.
are you unplugging it when not driving car for longer period?
Will dash cam drain battery if plugged to OBD? I currently wired mine like your but had to take it all the way to the center to use the usb.
@@Auto-Minute The garage buttons are powered even when the engine's off. Doesn't that mean ''Parking mode' could still work when the dashcam is connected to rearview mirror supply? Or is it only a certain duration of power supply or not enough to power the camera when the engine's off?
@@pradyHI really hope someone answers this? Just got my 2020 cx5 and I want constant power going to my camera
They have plastic trim pullers that don’t scratch anything. They usually come in a set. They have them at harbor freight. I use them all the time 👨🏼🔧 🔧
Thanks for your video, man! Very useful!
Appreciate it!
Cool video, I just installed a dash cam yesterday and had to run the cable all across the windshield lol because I didn't even know something like this existed. Question does this dongle pull power all the time? Or only when the car is on? Thanks!
I just did it apparently it's not permanent..
Power ON and OFF with the vehicle. Hardwire kit is still the way to go if you want the 24-hr surveillance :) I believe they sell that as well
Very elegant solution. Nothing tedious about any of this. I wonder if this can be used to connect up a radar detector? I have no interest in a dash cam, but this device beats splicing into the wiring harness to get power. Oh well my connector is a 4 pin with the factory frameless mirror and Homelink. No such adapater on that site.
Thanks Mark! It's definitely a pretty sweet solution for dashcam connectivity. Bummer they don't have that fits your vehicle, but just fyi...the power output on this thing is 2A @ 5V ✌
Looks great. Except how does it work when parked. Does that supply power when the car is off? If not, it's not that great.
Hey Paul, this will turn ON/OFF with the vehicle. It's meant to be a simpler alternative to routing a cable thru the entire cabin into the cigarette lighter/auxiliary power outlet, which also turns ON/OFF with your vehicle. If you're looking for parked functionality, you'll have to run a hardwire kit (usually taps into a fuse). I'll be making a video on that one for one of my older cars. Cheers.
@@Auto-MinuteI get that, but one main reason for a dashcam is to monitor it when the vehicle is parked. We use fuse taps to allow for this. We install Blackview dashcams and the wiring included is very thin and very easy to route anywhere. Nice idea tho
@@PaulBelkin Oh yeah definitely! I personally love Blackvue cameras :D ...but I know the concept of routing cables isn't a comfortable task for everyone. Perhaps I'll do a hardwired Backvue installation in a future video.
Very informative video. I have exact same 2021 Signature just in Red. I have a question I have got a Thinkware Dashcam. I have dongle. Does wiring you showed this way will drain battery in winters? Also do you keep your dashcam on for parking mode?
Hey there! So this dongle works when the vehicle is ON only. It's designed this way to prevent using your cars battery so you don't end up stranded if your vehicle's been sitting for a few days. Unfortunately, this also means that "parking mode" will not work with this because parking mode requires constant power even when the vehicle is OFF. Hope that helps!
Thank you this is so helpful!!
Glad I could help!
Any videos on installing rear dashcams?
Where’d you get the sweet Hyundai beanie bro?
I was wondering the same thing. Maybe we'll find out in the next video?? 😂
I can't get the 10 pin to remove from the camera and you make it look easy. Is there a tab im missing that loosens it?
Hey there! Are you having trouble removing the vehicle's 10-pin connector from it's housing? There is a small tab that you need to push in and then slide the connector straight out. Push the tab in with one hand and use the other hand to guide the connector out. Let me know if this did the trick!
Your video is really helpful brother. Did you install the rear dashcam as well ? Because I do not find a good demo of it in the RUclips. Appreciate if you can explain how did you install in the rear if you actually did !!
Hey brother, appreciate the kind words. Unfortunately, I'm not running a dashcam at the back. However, I do have a dual-lens camera now that captures footage inside the vehicle as well. I know it's a not true rear-cam solution, but it might interest you (ruclips.net/video/7NsmSZCP7VA/видео.htmlsi=YQBsfuGJupClim5l&t=126) I've timestamped the link shared so you can see what it offers.
Hello my friend, thanks for the video, sadly the connector from dongar is no longer available.
I'm thinking build my own, but i dont know in witch pin the usb cable go, do you think you can help me with that?
Thanks in advance.
Regards from Chile
Excellent video! I suspect this Dongar kit will also work in my 2024 Miata, which has the same frameless mirror and a similar camera housing.
Hey brother, I actually did a video on the ND Miata 🤙🏽 You can confirm fitment here - ruclips.net/video/ldHWmbteSCU/видео.htmlsi=EON5S3LxSgAzM7Hg
@@Auto-Minute Mine is a 2024 which has a totally new electrical system compared to the 2023 in that video. That will not work for a 2024 Miata.
@@dlg5485 Oh gotcha! my buddy just picked up a '24, maybe I can get my hands on it LOL appreciate the input!
Just a quick tip. Don’t use that crappy little blue tool. You’ll end up scraping the plastic. Get a proper trim tool. Also. Mine had a lot of power cable. A lot. Use electrical tape to tape it in the space inside that trim panel. I only remove the big half of the plastic, which made it much easier to hide the adapter and route the wire.
Great tips! It was a learning experience for me on this one. The blue tools work, but I know what you mean and have since invested in some proper trim removal tools.
Can anyone comment on the 2023s, are they still using the same 10pin connector? I heard they were interchanging them quite a bit at one point.
Its so useless. I have 2023 picked up last month and they are using 16 pin adaptor which is used in Ford F150
Oh man, which country is this? I've heard of the 16-pin being used in European models and maybe Canada?
Do u know if this would work in a mazda3 hatchback preferred 🤔
Do you have the connector attached directly on the back of your rearview mirror? If so, you prolly need the "Type A" adapter. I've added a link to that in the description as well :D
Thanks for the detailed guide! Quick question, does this method interfere with any existing functionality of the car like lane keep assist? I have a CX-5 signature 2024 and am considering doing this!
Hey! It doesn't interfere with any safety tech. It's sourcing power from the circuit that powers your auto-dimming and homelink system. I've had mine running since I posted that video, zero issues. I've even upgraded my dash cam, but running the same wiring setup.
I have one question since you have this from a long time. Does its get heated up on long trips or no such issues ??
Hi Sandy! I've had this installed on our CX5 for well over a year at this point and there's honestly nothing bad to report back on. We also park the car outside thru rain and shine. I think the only thing that got a little loose was the magnet the dashcam attaches to....but that can be attributed to me re-locating the dash cam a few times. These dash cam adhesives aren't meant to be moved around so many times so test out a spot first before sticking it on :D Hope this helped! Cheers.
just tried to install using this method today, it seems like it would work but i got the wrong adapter, i dont have the frameless mirror so i bought the one labeled as such in your description but it doesnt fit, i need the one you labeled for the frameless mirror. it seems like the differentiating factor is the auto dimming function not whether or not your mirror is frameless. i have a 2021 CX-5 grand touring reserve
Ah shucks, was your connector in the same location as mine? Hope you got it sorted out and are geared up!
Where can I buy a dongar adapter?
Will the adaptor work with the 4th gen Mazda 3?
Hi auto minute, does the 12V port turn off if i turn off the car? Planning to run a wire from it via the pillar but don't want a dead battery coming morning:) thanks
Hey! If you're running a wire down to the 12V aux power outlet (cigarette lighter), there's a chance that's still running power off your vehicle's battery even when [OFF]. In most vehicles, they're usually activated when key is in the accessory power position or [ON], but I have seen some cars where that port is powered 24/7. As for the adapter I'm using in this video...it turns [ON] and [OFF] with the vehicle so there's no worries about it draining your battery. Are you driving a CX5 as well?
@Auto-Minute thanks for the response. I have a cx9 2022 GT. Mazda also told me the same that the cigarette lighter port might be drawing power always.
@@nkishor Since it's a CX9 and a Grand Touring, you should already have an auto-dimming mirror right? ..or do you have a different setup than mine?
@Auto-Minute correct, it has the autodimming mirror. The reason i was looking to run the wire down to cigar port was that's how i had it in my old car, and also (irrational)fear of voiding warranty or breaking the mirror panel :D
@@nkishorAhh I see. One more question...Does it plug in directly into the back of the mirror or go into the plastic shroud like mine? I wouldn't worry too much. You're not making any modification to the vehicle's functionality or safety features. I understand the concern, but it's going to be so cleaner doing it this way. As for breaking the mirror panel lol my advice when it comes to taking panels apart...just be patient. It's all just a bunch of tabs. I need to re-watch my video now to see if I captured the panel removal process clearly enough haha
Maybe you posted somewhere but I missed it, I don’t see a link to the adapter.
Hey! Appreciate you checking out my video. I left a link in the description 👍 but here's a direct link anyway - dongar.tech/products/mazdaframeless. This adapter will work on Mazda's "frameless" rearview mirror usually seen on Signature trims (pre-2022), but on several trims for the 2022+ models.
Anyone know if this works for all 2019 trims? I have the touring model.
I have the frameless mirror, but if you have an auto-dimming mirror on your 2019, it might work with the Type A (link in the video description).
Great video - thank you so much!
Hi. Does this set up support for a camera with a 24hrs parking sensor and collision detection that requires to be ON even the car is off?
Hey Emmy! This adapter is equipped to turn [ON] and [OFF] with the vehicle. Based on their statistics, majority of incidents happen while a vehicle is in motion. Additionally, they didn't want to risk a dash cam tapping into the vehicle's battery when it's [OFF]. That said, I do believe newer dashcams come equipped with battery protection so it automatically stops sourcing power from your battery so it still retains enough power to crank when you get back to your vehicle. Hope that helps!
I'm using cigarette lighter for dashcam and due to this my dashcam is never going OFF (although my parking mode is OFF). It eventually drained my 2022 CX 5 battery which was just two months old 😕)..
Does the installation that you suggested helps me from above issue for CX 5 2022?
Hey Chaitanya! You won't have to worry about it with this product. It's designed to specifically AVOID the problem you just experienced. It'll turn ON and OFF with the vehicle without tapping into the battery. I'll take this over the cost of a new battery any day :D Cheers!
Where can I get if sold out? D:
Hey there! They must have just sold out because I recently referred someone to the link and they were in stock. They usually stock up quickly on Mazda adapters.
@@Auto-Minute Thanks, I reached out to Dongar and they did say they should be back in stock this month.
It's available on Amazon now :D. I ordered the only one cause it's unavailable again lol.
@@Dolomite1lol awesome! that's good timing.
@@Auto-Minute Thanks to you cause I checked right after typing my response, if not I would've probably checked in a few days.
Cool idea but the wire dongar harness loom looks really flimsy
Hey there! Yeah, it does look that way (I was very careful when I first took it out the box), but after handling it a few times, they're actually quite durable. I also figure most folks will set it up once and never touch it again...in which case, there's no strain on the physical wiring itself.
Nice video - Quick question if you have time: Does it power off once the car is turned off and locked?
I don't want my dashcam running 24/7, so i'd prefer a setup that powers off with the vehicle.
Currently mine of plugged into the cigarette lighter which gets power all the time...also I have a ODB-II power lead, but that also stayed powered...sheesshhhh
Appreciate it! Sir Raymond, let me tell ya, this adapter powers ON and OFF with the vehicle. You will not have to worry about the 24/7 power drain. Is this for your CX5 as well?
Worked perfect thank you! Any recommendations on a rear camera?
Glad this helped! I haven't set up a rear-facing camera for my CX5....yet
No dash cam on my Mazda. No navigation card in navigation slot. But, they gave me daylight running lights...which I hate and can't disable. DRL are not required in my country.
Sorry bro. Mazda not giving you the navigation slot is just dirty. I've definitely seen those SD cards available online if you're looking for one, but if you're using Android Auto or Car Play, then it sort of doesn't matter. I did end up installing a wireless receiver for Android Auto which has been awesome. As for dash cam, definitely pick one up because you just never know what can happen on the road. Drive safe!
@@Auto-Minute I'll definitely get that SD card online. I've seen them sold for around $ 30. Much better than paying dealer $ 500. I will be using Android auto most of the time because no SD card is 100% up to date. If I ever get stuck in some remote location that doesn't have cell phone service I'll use Mazda navigation.
Just curious...if I install after market dash cam and use a fuse that is always powered, will it drain the battery?
@@samkitty5894 There's a chance it drains the battery. Just make sure whatever dash cam you install has "low voltage protection" built-in. It's designed to keep it from pulling too much charge, so you still have enough amps to turn ON the vehicle. Car batteries aren't designed for deep cycle charging, so ideally you wouldn't want to constantly drain and charge, impacting your battery's health. However, if you do drive every single day, you're probably OK. Lastly, I have a hardwire kit hooked up on my other car for constant power and it has never runs for 24h straight. It usually shuts off after 4 to 10 hrs to preserve battery charge. The number of hours depend on how much I drive that day.
Hi, this approach looks really nice and tidy. Is this option available for all the Mazda cx-5 with homelink rear view mirror? I just bought a 2022 cx-5 preferred with homelink rear view mirror but I am not sure whether it is frameless or not. I hope it will work on my car hahaha.
Hey there! Does your car have the connector on the back of the rearview mirror? If you have to remove the plastic shroud like in my video, then you most likely have the frameless adapter :) Let me know how it goes!
Hey buddy, how’s the parking mode with the dashcam?
Does it work great? Thanks
Hey Kin - This adapter only works when your vehicle ignition is ON. If you wish to use "parking mode," you'll need to tap into the vehicle's battery for constant power. This could run the risk of draining too much from your vehicles battery which can weaken the battery over time and end up being more expensive. I've personally never felt the need to have "Parking Mode" enabled on my dashcam, however, everyone's got a different situation so whatever works best for your needs :D
@@Auto-Minute it’s really helpful for me and thanks 😊
I can't seem to get the cover open/off. I've tried the orange plastic tool that comes with the kit and myriad other 'flat bent plastic tools' and while i can start at the bottom notch and get a tiny space between the sections...they two halves don't separate. Worried too much pressure and I'll break it. Any ideas or wisdom on how I can get the plastic cover(s) off?
Hmm...since you're already able to start splitting it apart from the bottom, it would help if you had another pry tool or even a flat head to insert into the gap and sort of run the 2nd tool up the seam. It should definitely release that way. So initial tool to create the gap at the bottom, and a 2nd tool to run up the seam. Hope this helps! Let me know
@@Auto-Minute That worked. Woo! You're awesome, thank you!
I wonder if the 2024 model is similar. Picking my new car up today and will eventually want a dash came as well. I hate all of the wiriing, so if this works out for 2024, i am all for it. Wonder when cars will come out with dash cams as "standard" hahaha!
Hey! It should be the same. As for when cars will come with dash cams standard...who knows lol some dealerships offer a dash cam setup as part of a "tech package" or some marketing jargon with crazy prices.
How's your experience with Dongar so far? Any issues?
Hey there! Zero issues so far. I haven't had to think about it much since setup, just the occasional formatting of the SD card once it's filled.
So did you have to stick it to the window?
Hi Lacey! I was able to tuck the adapter and wiring within the overhead console. I then stuck the dashcam to the left-hand side of the console. Hope that helped! 🤙
Is there a way to get power from the panel (a or b) instead? I don’t have power mirror but I have that pan al that has power since it shows who’s seatbelts are on etc
hmmm that's a good question. Do you still have the same shroud as the one seen here? In theory that should work, but it would require a unique adapter head and pin placement.
Hey nice video, took me a while to take off the cover lol, but I couldn’t pull (or find any release button) to remove the dongle, felt like I’d rip the wiring apart. I have a 22 carbon edition (non frameless) and the part the dongle plugs into is not black like yours (rather it’s the same color as the dongle, whiteish). Anyone’s advice would be appreciated. Also when I refer to the dongle I just mean the one plugged into the car not the adapter, I just want to check which 10 pin I have so I can get the right adapter
There is a small tab in the middle of the male connector that you need to depress, sometimes with a tool. Look up pictures of "10-pin automotive connector" to see it.
Hey there! As @dzdaddy mentioned, there is a "release" clip that you have to push downwards on and pull the connector out. You will not need any force, so definitely be gentle and patient during this process :) I posted a recent video for another car, but I was able to get a close up of how the connector get unplugged - ruclips.net/video/vwHGTnxVBGk/видео.html
any suggestions of tips if you want to include a rear dashcam?
Wiring for rear mounted dashcams tend to run thru the floor which wouldn't be suitable for this adapter. I've meddled around with the panels on the rear trunk, but no luck with a solution at this time :( Sorry!
Thanks for the vid, wanted to know about rear view camera, this just frontal i guess
Yup, only front-facing, but you could power a rear dashcam using the same adapter OR pickup a dashcam with cabin view as well (easiest solution imo)
Ooh so you mean from Dongar 10 pin to USB A adapter we can connect the rear one too and wire it back to the top of boot gate? Kinda confused, Sorry, totally new into dash cams so asking these questions. Your suggestion of having a single dashcam with in-cabin view makes sense too. ✌️
It doesn’t fit in my cx5 S Select
The only terminal is for the camera sensor..I choose the non frameless I thought it’s different..
Hey! What's the year of your CX5? Also, is the connector on the back of the mirror or inside the plastic shroud above?
Does installing it this way going to activate the dashcam's parking mode?
This is connected to your ignition so it will simply turn ON and OFF with the vehicle. Parking mode required direct power from your vehicle's battery.
so does this mean you dont have to hard wire your dash cam?
Hey Sandor, you don't have to hardwire your dashcam using your vehicle's auxiliary power. Instead you can use this adapter and power your dashcam using the power running to your rearview mirror. It's important that your vehicle comes equipped with auto-dimming rearview mirror from factory. Reach out to them if you have questions specific to vehicles other than this Mazda! :)
Does dashcam power off when car is turned off or can this adapter work for parking mode?
The dashcam will power off if the ignition is switch off, however...it will turn on if you simply turn on the electrical system without switching the car full ON...as long as you have power, the dashcam will turn on and start recording.
My 2022 mazda cx-5 select doesn't have the tap in white box wire thingy
Is your's located on the back of the rearview mirror directly?
Does it only have power when it's running or does the mirror have power all of the time?
Hey John...power to the dashcam cuts on or off depending on whether the car is running.
Does this provide continuous power to the dashcam for parking mode?
It replaces the need to use your vehicle's auxiliary power port which turns ON and OFF with your vehicle. If you wish to use "parking mode," you'll need to tap into the vehicle's battery power.
THANK YOU!😀
Nice video! Does it switch to parking mode when engine is off?
Doubtful, since USB connectors only have power, ground, and data. I have a problem finding power that's only on with ignition on a CX-30 (internal fusebox is always on). I don't think this product will correct that.
Does it still power for parking mode when the car is off?
It does NOT tap into the vehicle's battery power. It powers ON and OFF with the vehicle.
Ggrr8t video. Exactly what I was looking for and your presentation or how you did this video was excellent.
Appreciate it! Glad it was helpful.
very helpful!
Appreciate it Tony!
Where did you find that adapter. What exactly is it called?
Hey Robert, I've left links to the adapter in the description. Just make sure your CX5 trim matches because there's 2 types that work on the CX5 depending on the kind of rearview mirror you have. Cheers and happy thanksgiving!
Great video.... QUESTION: can you link to the 'short USB A to MICRO USB cable' that you used to connect the Garmin Dash Cam to the Dongar Adaptor? I used a short cable and the Garmin would not power up with it..... so I tried several other cable I had laying around and a handful of them worked, while others were apparently not compatible. These were all LONG length cables though, so am looking for a 'shorty' cable to connect my Garmin 57 (similar to yours) to the Dongar adapter.
Hey! I actually used the long USB to microUSB that came in the Garmin dash cam. I also have this cable which worked with the adapter as well (www.amazon.com/SUNGUY-Braided-Charging-Samsung-Android/dp/B073TTTPXD/ref=sr_1_8?crid=SVRNQ7I5Y8A8&keywords=usb%2Bto%2Bmicrousb%2B2%22&qid=1664600212&qu=eyJxc2MiOiIwLjk4IiwicXNhIjoiMC4wMCIsInFzcCI6IjAuMDAifQ%3D%3D&sprefix=usb%2Bto%2Bmicrousb%2B2%2B%2Caps%2C117&sr=8-8&th=1) sorry for the enormous link! LOL just make sure you plan out where you want to mount your camera and measure that length accordingly. The short cable that comes in the Dongar Technologies box might actually work if routed thru the bottom, but I can't remember since it's been a while.
Couldnt open the cover, any ideas ? Or other link, how this cover called
Hey! You should be able to get into the gap from the very bottom. Are you using a similar tool as well?
Does the dash cam power off when the car is turned off to prevent battery drainage?
*Read the comments, it does
Thanks for the vid!
Of course!..and yes it does haha thanks for dropping the comment :D
Would this adapter affects the car’s warranty?
The adapter does not interfere with the vehicle's engine, computer etc. It simply taps into the power that runs to your auto-dimming (or homelink) rearview mirror. However, dealers will resort to blaming anything they can if you do experience issues with your car. So as a rule of thumb, you never want to mention mods (of any kind) if you're seeking assistance from a dealership lol
Any idea if the 10 pin would work with a 2018 mazda 3 GT?
Hey Shawn! Depends on where your connector port is located. If it's on the back of the mirror, you'll need the "Type A." I've added the information in the description as well :)
Do you know what max current you can draw from that connector?
It's the standard USB output of 2A @ 5V
Are you using the 10 Pin adapter for Mazda Framless Mirrors?
Yup. The connector on my CX5 takes a "10-pin Mazda Frameless Adapter." The link to it is in the description. You'll need the "Type A" if your connector is located on the back of the rearview mirror.
I was about to hard wire my dash cam when I saw this video but since I just bought my car with extended warranty I am worried doing this will void my warranty. Anyone knows if hard wiring the dash cam voids my warranty?
Hey! This should not void your warranty. It does not impact anything mechanical nor does it interfere with any wiring relating to safety features (Lane Alert System). It's a real simple mod and simply taps into the rearview mirror to utilizes power (~2 amps). I'm sure the dealership doesn't want you even pop your hood 😅
Do we need to re-program the garage opener on the homelink?
You don't need to re-program anything. Everything works normally.
Hello, is that setup enabled parking mode?
Hey Joel - It does not. The dash cam will turn ON and OFF with the vehicle. There are some dash cams with internal battery that go into "parking mode." However, if you just want 24/7 power...you'll need to use a hardwire kit. Check this out (dongar.tech/products/garmin-parking-mode-cable)
@Auto-Minute Thank you so much for the clarification. I didn't know whether this was my option or not.
@@joelbaptiste374 No worries! Plenty of options in the market these days. Just depends on how you want to get setup. If you do opt for a dash cam with "Parking Mode"...be sure to check how their parking mode works. Does it pick up footage only AFTER impact or does it also pickup footage a few seconds before and after.
@Auto-Minute Gotcha, I have the REDTIGER Dash Cam Front Rear, 4K/2.5K Full HD Dash Camera for Cars, Free 32GB SD Card, Built-in Wi-Fi GPS
will it only have power when truned on ?
Yes. It's wired to your vehicles Ignition so it powers ON when you're ready to hit the road.
have a mazda3 with just a regular rearview mirror does that mean its frameless or non-frameless?
Hey there! Does your mirror have any power running to it...auto-dimming or homelink equipped? This adapter requires power running to the rearview mirror to work. Let me know.
@@Auto-Minute i have the touring trim but i dont think the mirror is either but it has the same box. And think there’s a cable going in
@@awhittlesey Cable going right into the back of the mirror?
@@Auto-Minute its a cable from the ceiling into the box leading to a radar sensor for cruise control. So i know there’s power but not sure which adapter i could use.
will this work with 2024 carbon model?
Hey! I recently got wind of a new 5-pin connector pin on some newer Mazda's. If you check the port on your Carbon trim, could you confirm if it's also a 10-pin? If it is, then this should work.
still waiting for the dongar dongle to come in the mail before even trying to pry open the mirror 😅 but i’ll keep you posted! great video btw, really hope it’s compatible
Can confirm the works with 2024 Mazda CX-5 CE Homelink mirror 🎉 so happy i don’t need to run those long wires throughout the car. Thanks again for the teetotal 👍
@@jdogbouncerman69 Awesome! So the 10-pin adapter did the trick 🙏 Appreciate the update. Definitely helpful for anyone else in the same boat with a Cardon trim level.
Is the USB port 5V?
Yup!
Great presentation, you should do that professionally. Maybe tone down the music a tad, it becomes somewhat annoying after a while. Thanks
Appreciate the kind words Michael...and definitely agree on the annoying music overlay (1st time editing ha!)
