I now have the confidence of knowing your excellent videos are available to help me service and repair the '03 K1200LT I'm buying this weekend.
Appreciate all of your great videos. This one was really helpful. You are absolutely correct, the drain plug is somewhat difficult to reach (14mm hex, Allen screw). As a former MBZ tech, I have access to a variety of German tools. One that I found very helpful was a Hazet ½ drive socket (Part #985-14, available on Amazon ($18 at this time) and others). Once you get the exhaust bracket out of the way, and using a ½ breaker bar, you have sufficient room access the drain plug - plus if it is really tight, you have sufficient leverage to break it loose. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the tips. It's not a difficult procedure unless your drain plug is pert-near frozen in place. Persistence pays.
That's what they make sledgehammers for. Or a regular hammer, ball pain or claw. And I am being serious. Bit in, wrench on it, hit end of wrench with hammer. Can also use a box end wrench of whatever size will securely lock onto the spanner / open end wrench to increase leverage.
I was so happy after learning to do this from you, I did it twice. Especially, because BMW in Daytona, at the Bikefest wanted $85 dollars to do it plus the oil. I purchased a BMW oil wrench online to make it easy, that was the most expensive thing, but I still, with 2 changes, only spent about $50, compared to $210...(BMWx2)
First I put in 'analog' oil :D , then 'synthetic' the 2nd time. Mobile 1.

Model# 822281 for $1.20 at home depot and a 9/16 wrench for the 14 mm plug

Really helped. I don't have the skid plate, so removing the steel plate the muffler stirrup attaches to (remove the hex head screw on the muffler end and the two 15mm bolts that hold the plate; it will come out as a unit) gave me plenty of room for a socket. A 14mm was 'just' too large, but a few minutes with a file fixed that. I'm using Valvoline 75W-90 synthetic. Thanks for the videos.

I have a new to me 98 K12RS and have done all the service to prep for new season. Made a removal tool from a 3/8" bolt and two nuts (9/16 top of the bolt =14mm and slid right in nice and snug). I broke the bolt/tool trying to loosen the plug. Switched to a grade 8 bolt and sheared that one as well. the nuts are up close to the plug to minimize leverage, but I cannot believe how tight that plug is!!! I'm ready to order a 14MM 1/2" drive impact hex, but I'm afraid I'll break something. Any ideas?
I use a 14mm 1/2" hex to remove it. Someone put it in too tight on you..
Hi Kirk. for this and the final drive gear oil. I assume you use the same gear oil ? I have GL-5 Hypoid Limited Slip 80-90 Gear oil, which I used for my car. Would that work or do I need the synthetic 75-90 or 75-140 gear oil which you're using in the video? I assume both the transmission and final drive use the same Oil ?? Thanks so much.

There is no crush seal on these large drain plugs.

Could you post the weights that you use for both final drive and transmission fluid?
I use Amsoil Severe Gear 75/110
-SAME AS FINAL DRIVE FLUID ? 80/140 DUE TO CALIFORNIA HEAT --- AND HOW MUCH .. ABOUT 1/2 A JUG FULL ?

Does K1200R have separate transmission oil?

12000. or every other oil change is what I recommend. 6k on the Final Drive or every oil change

It takes just about 1 qt for both the trans and FD combined. and please DONT YELL AT ME! :-)

I just finished the oil change on my transmission, didn't even take the draine plug out like they do it in Europe,
I siphoned the oil out of the fill plug and filled it with one quarter of synthetic Lucas
75w90 and plugged it!!
1 quart of lucas 75w90
at o'reylies is $14.95!!!
BTW, fill it till oil starts coming out of the fill plug.
takes 1 quart.

I enjoyed your video, but it shows again why the K1200LT is a lousy purchase for anyone who is not a very dedicated DIY'er and can't afford dealer service. This job is back breaking without a lift (and a big one is necessary for this bike). All the body work makes doing simple jobs on this bike a lot of work.
