Excellent information for the Westerner!!! Certainly gives a broader perspective of the meaning of Bhakti in a broader sense, in terms of the historical socio-cultural, political, and spiritual politics between the Brahmans and the Bhakti movement in Southern and Northern India. Thank you!!!!
He said Vallabhacharya revamped the bhakti movement in south India. Although he was born in a Telugu Brahmin family & won a debate (शास्त्रार्थः) in Vijayanagar, his core area of preaching was the Braj & Nathdwara.

Very interesting talk. The two reasons quoted for Bhakthi movement targeting Buddhism and Jainism were not very convincing though. Buddhists were the first ones to denounce caste system and were the first ones to include women as ascetics. So, it doesn't get any more egalitarian than that. From the Buddhist Suttas it is clear that Buddhist monks were encouraged to use local languages. I wonder if the main reason was instead the tough ascetic life that both Buddhism and Jainism required and the common person was not prepared to go through that?
What is said about Madvacharya (not Madhavacharya) is not fully correct. Madvacharya Started Haridasa movement when the time India was suffering from Islamic invasion. The great poets like Purandara Daasa, Kanaka Dasa were part of this movement. During the Kannada Bhakti Movement, the Vijayanagara empire was at its Zenith in the 15/16th Century. The Kannada Bhakti movement resulted in the new music system called Karnataka Sangeeta (Karnatak Music). After the fall of Vijayanagara, St. Tukaram took the Haridasa movement to Maharashtra which enabled Shivaji to rose to the power in the 17th Century. Similarly, Mira Bai, Krishna Chaitanya were all the part of the same Haridasa Movement. Even Iscon is a continuation of the same. Why there is no mention of Basavanna led Veerashaiva movement. Where was Shankaracharya. His explanation about South was only Tamil Centric.
Indeed a very lucid way of explanation along with exceptional content not to overlook an adorable pronunciation.
