Piano playing combines three major "techniques" -- centering, rebounding, and weight coordination. Centering asks for a great freedom of the hands, wrists and arms so as to move sideways and up and down very quickly and freely; Rebounding is a constant impulsion that moves the hands instantly all the time, and promotes immediate relaxation of hands and fingers at every second. Fingers should rest on the keys as long as they are not playing, just as the hammers do when they are not playing, they rest on the chords without moving. Weight coordination is a major capacity linked with energy, phrasing and meaning.
I have wanted my whole life to study from someone like you Mme.Saboya, a true master. I pray to God I will get the chance, Thank you so much for sharing your skill, knowledge and love of music...you have indeed made our wold a much more beautiful place. -Jon

To the Music Publisher I am pleased to write this letter of recommendation about the book "Piano Cantabile: Pédagogie pour un Piano qui Chante", written by the pianist Maria Saboya. As a pianist and piano teacher, I had the opportunity to take lessons from her and observe her ideas and methods regarding the technical and musical aspects of piano playing. Her knowledge, abilities and skills are extraordinary and she helped me a lot to broaden significantly my knowledge on technical and musical matters. Her pedagogical method is unique and incomparable to any other method that i am aware of, making this book a must have for any piano student and teacher who wants to master the genuine way of piano playing. Therefore, I give my highest recommendation. Athens, Greece, 12.2.2018

The music itself creates the technique needed to implement it. Technique is a means to an end, not an end in and of itself. Watch McCoy Tyner, Keith Jarrett, Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock....
THAT IS ABSOLUTELLY CORRECT. BUT WHEN A BODY HAS NOT THE CAPACITY TO ADAPT TO THE INSTRUMENT THE PIANIST CANNOT BE FAITHFUL TO THE DEEP REALITY OF A PIECE OF MUSIC. THE BODY OF A PIANIST MUST BE FREE AND PERFECTLY ADAPTED TO THE INSTRUMENT. THEN HE CAN PLAY REAL MUSIC. ALL WE DO IN MY SCHOOL IS TO FREE THE STUDENT BODY SO THAT HE WILL BE ABLE TO FREELY EXPRESS THE MUSIC. YOU CITE PIANISTS WHO HAVE AN EXCELLENT COORDINATION ON THE PIANO. THIS QUALITY DOES NOT COME TO LIFE WITHOUT A LONG PREPARATION OF THE FIRST INSTRUMENT WHICH IS THE BODY ITSELF. IN MY SCHOOL, "TECHNIQUE" MEANS "WAYS TO LIBERATE THE BODY" TO ALLOW THE PIANIST TO CONQUER HIS INSTRUMENT AND THEN PLAY WITH ALL HIS PHYSICAL AND SPIRITUAL CAPACITIES.
“You don’t learn any kind of shit like that naturally. That’s something somebody teaches you, like when you teach someone how to play an instrument correctly. After you’ve learned how to play your instrument the right way, you can turn around and play it the way you want to, anyway you hear the music and sound and want to play it. But you gotta first learn how to be cool and let whatever happens happen.” Miles Davis (from his Autobiography) I think there is a lot of value in learning technique, and in practicing technique by itself (isolated from music content). The thing, is that, like other subjects as nutrition and economics, as important and useful as it is to TRY understanding it (technique), it's incredibly complex, there is no easy and exact answer for these things. So, there are various approaches for piano technique, like there various approaches to nutrition and how to deal with your body. You have to learn as much as you can and think for yourself. But don't think that technique is ”embedded” in the music, you will miss so much incredible knowledge, so many “eureka” moments that you get when you think about technique seriously. I like to read a lot about technique from various sources and collect all kinds of technique exercises in a workbook, then at the end my body will learn to do things in various ways, and finally combine all the knowledge into efficient playing. I like to practice all ways possible, instead of a single way.
DO AS YOU WISH MY DEAR JUAN ! YOU ARE FREE, FREE, FREE ! FREE YOURSELF, FREE YOUR BODY, AND MAKE YOUR MUSIC EXPLODE FREELY ! THIS IS WHAT I TEACH TO MY STUDENTS. IT IS NOT EVEN TEACHING..... IT IS MOSTLY ERASING CONDITIONNINGS....

Bien cordialement. P.
Merci, Philippe.

LA MUSIQUE EST TOUJOURS VIVANTE. ELLE S'EXPRIME A TRAVERS LES BOUTS DES DOIGTS D'UN PIANISTE, C'EST DIRE QUE LA VIE QUI HABITE CE PIANISTE SE TRANSMET DIRECTEMENT A SES DOIGTS QUI PARLENT, QUI CHANTENT ET QUI EXPRIMENT LA MUSIQUE. QU'A-T-IL FAIT POUR TRANSFORMER SES DOIGTS EN DES AUTHENTIQUES INTERPRETES D'UNE VERITE MUSICALE VIVANTE ?
+bogdymann interesting comment. See, years earlier, I'd certainly agree with you. But, as a piano student myself, I can guarantee you that those ''ways of articulation and hand movements'' are the fundamentals of a good technique. Some times, our fingers can't do all the work alone, because they don't have enough strength. In order to help them, we need to activate stronger muscles (arm, forearm, elbows), thus the need of such movements. They enable us to relax our hands and fingers, give more fluency, flexibility, better tone, but most of all, prevent us from feeling any sort of physical pain, or having severe injuries due to exhaustive finger work. There is a very interesting book dealing with that subject, called ''on piano playing'' by Györg Sandor. Also, you should watch Taubman's ''choreography of the hands'' (you can find it here on youtube). Hope you enjoy it :)
+Amanda Kohn Thank you for the answer Amanda. After a biit of thinking I realised that technique does have a lot to do with the coreagraphy of the hand. Will check out your suggestions :)
+Amanda Kohn very well explained. At the end of the clip, she performs a piece with combo of several hand movements that articulate into the beautiful sound EVEN despite the horrible sound quality of the clip itself.

Thank you
To Secret Mission : The name of the piece on minute 10.05 is Rachmaninov's Prelude opus 23n°. 7.
May I ask where is this wonderful, inspiring place?
It is an ancient "cité" called Villeneuvette, near Montpellier in the South of France.
It was an old "factory" designed and built by the great COLBERT, but transformed into a private community with a few houses and gardens.
It's so peaceful and rich of ancient atmosphere... rare qualities in our times...

Mme. Saboya,

Dear Maestra! Is there any necesity in lifting up the fingers so much as the young man does at 03:34?
DEAR ALEX, in the particular case of that student, that exercice was necessary because he had started to learn piano very late. His tendons were too tight so that he did not have real freedom of his finger movements. In doing that exercice he would improve the flexibility of his tendons and liberate his fingers.
Maria Saboya Got it!Thank you very much, dear Maestra!
Dear Alex, you are a very good pianist. All the best to you, and thank you for the contact. Maria Saboya
Maria Saboya thank you very much, dear Maestra!I value your opinion a lot!
De dónde sos??
En réponse à Cilene Cilene, it is the Prelude op. 23 n° 7 de Rachmaninov.
Very good wrist technique!

Check in on Maria Saboya from Paris. She is perhaps the only great great teacher that remains in this field of expertise that i've ever known.
Is there someone equal to Dorothy and Maria in the America?

To the Music Publisher
I am pleased to write this letter of recommendation about the book "Piano Cantabile: Pédagogie pour un Piano qui Chante", written by the pianist Maria Saboya.

I wish there was a video on how to get the pinky to relax in a natural curved manner when playing.....mine tends to stick up a bit
It’s simple. Focus your mind on your body. Concentrate effortlessly like meditation. You must relearn a new muscle memory.
What is the title of the last piece she played at the end? Chopin sonata?
+Ally Uy It is Sonata in B minor opus 58 of Chopin..
Thanks for posting. maurice
Thank you so much! That means a lot. :) I am sure we will be in contact in the future. :) thanks again. :)

But you gotta first learn how to be cool and let whatever happens happen.”
Miles Davis (from his Autobiography)
I think there is a lot of value in learning technique, and in practicing technique by itself (isolated from music content).
Maria Saboya : ) thanks so much for the inspiration Maria
I will try to translate it.

Mme Saboya,
Bien cordialement.
P.
Merci, Philippe.

LA MUSIQUE EST TOUJOURS VIVANTE. ELLE S'EXPRIME A TRAVERS LES BOUTS DES DOIGTS D'UN PIANISTE, C'EST DIRE QUE LA VIE QUI HABITE CE PIANISTE SE TRANSMET DIRECTEMENT A SES DOIGTS QUI PARLENT, QUI CHANTENT ET QUI EXPRIMENT LA MUSIQUE. QU'A-T-IL FAIT POUR TRANSFORMER SES DOIGTS EN DES AUTHENTIQUES INTERPRETES D'UNE VERITE MUSICALE VIVANTE ?
What's up with the title? That's not technique at all, just ways of articulation and some hand movements :(
+bogdymann interesting comment.

IT IS YOUR RIGHT, ALEX ! GOOD LUCK.
