This is an outstanding collection of Robin Guthrie's music, the Grand Master of guitar, accomplishing several techniques like, the "Falling Cascade Effect", "Maximum Reverberation Galore", and "Intersections of Acoustic Echoes". The one song that's missing, is the Victorialand EP acoustic version of "Oomingmak", without Elizabeth Fraser's vocal overlay. It's a hair-raising, and he's extremely accomplished. He made me want to start playing the guitar, myself; however, I could never seem to make the time, so, I listen instead. Without him there would be no Dream-pop or Shoegaze; both, done in his signature style. He and Elizabeth made music history together, and there are so many stories, I've learned, with over 39+ year of loyalty. Contrary to some Internet-based "pseudo-mythology" floating around the coinage of the "Dream-pop" term, it, was definitely Elizabeth Fraser who first use the term, at a 4AD Press Release Party for the Treasure album in 1983. A snobbish music editor, who thought Elizabeth and Robin were using gimmicks or tricks in order to garner attention, while writing a review he cought Elizabeth sitting alone and essentially he cornered her and asked, "Do you think the Cocteau Twins are relevant to pop-culture music?". Elizabeth was both angry and embarrassed, on the verge of tears, she waited a moment, looking down, then had an epiphany, raised the head to meet his gaze and said, "My music is like walking through a dream" and "I dream of music" -- "It's Dream-pop" you bastard... !!!". Robin heard the commotion and escorted her out of the party and never again had another interview, without either Robin or Simon beside herself. However, the die was cast, as Great Britain's music Industry, heavy hitters, overheard Elizabeth's forceful comment -- Geniuses was a masterstroke of Genius, on her part. The term was perfect, after all people didn't know what to name their music, what where they; Goth, Dark-wave, Post-punk, Brit-pop, Ethereal, New-Age -- was super big during this time period. Dream-pop, became the standard terminology and anybody who repeated the term after 1983, are just plain lying. Never before had Scotland's best kept secret, would influence musicians around the Globe. There is so much more to say and not enough space for a whole commentary. Thank you, for taking the time to read these comments and be safe.
Excellent compilation of one of the most influential Guitarists of Dream Pop and Shoegaze music, we hope to soon part 2 of the compilation, greetings from Lima - Peru!
I’m listening through the phone speaker, it’s a bit like trying to watch colors through a black and withe tv. Damn. I wish I could listen through proper gear.
The best thing about today will be finding this. Of that I am certain. 🙂
