ENTIRE MANIA ALBUM EXPLAINED | Fall Out Boy

- MANIA didn't blow my mind per se, but it was interesting. Fall Out Boy stretched themselves a little, they tried some new stuff, and they got deep every once in a while--actually more than a couple of times. I enjoyed Mania overall even if I'm not the world's biggest Fall Out Boy fan.

What's funny is that "I'll stop wearing black when they make a darker color" is a quote from Wednesday Addams
They did make a darker color tho it’s called vantablack
Skylar Grey it’s... still black
Skylar Grey it's still black though lmao
Where?
I think theres a bit more to "Stay frosty royal milk tea." Usually when Fall Out Boy pulls out some french, theres something deeper going on. I read somewhere that the whole idea of "are you smelling that shit? Eau de résistance" is a play on words on the idea of giving a smell to what resistance to societal expectations which I find to be an interesting sensory idea.
Also, I find the line "The only thing that's ever stopping me is me" to be really important. To me, its the idea that Pete/Patrick/whichever one of them wrote this is sharing that their insecurities are the only thing that is keeping them from doing what they love. They have outside support, but they are still stopping themselves from truly embracing things. Maybe thats just what I want it to mean but I like the idea of it. Its interesting how the same lyrics can mean such different things to different people
Thanks for sharing. This is a strong analysis, and I appreciate you sharing it.
I love how you say you're not a big FOB fan and are unbiased but you still praised them most of the way through the video! Shows that mania really isn't that bad because I know lots of people dislike it
And I really don't know how to be a critic. What's good for one person someone else totally hates.
I write arms races not fashion statements heccing love mania
You should talk about some older Fall Out Boy songs because the lyrical content of those is much harder to understand. I would like an explanation of Seven Minutes In Heaven for example.
For me, bishop's knife trick really is a fob's song, like when I first heard it it made me think of Jetpack Blues. But it's their "softer" side, with songs such as What a catch and Jetpack blues, so yeah, maybe it's less common for them to make songs like that ^^ For the rest... They change their style, and I like that. I mean, nobody wants to do the same thing for years and years.
As a huge Fall Out Boy fan, this album was very pick-and-choose for me. Many of the songs were more repetitive and lacking in lyrical content than anything in their previous albums, but Stay Frosty Royal Milk Tea, Last of the Real Ones, Heaven's Gate, Hold Me Tight or Don't, and Bishops Knife Trick are absolute gems that I'll definitely replay.
You should review Infinity on High or Folie a Deux! Infinity on High is probably their most popular pre-hiatus album, but I think Folie has some of their best, most experimental and transitional work on it. Pete Wentz is a poet, and part of the fun of listening to FOB's music is getting caught up in a catchy song and then looking up the lyrics and realizing the edgy and meaningful message being said.
Here's what I thought, Fam. Now it's your turn. What did you think? And which songs from this album need explanation? :)
Here's an EP I think you should review/explain. I think you'll love it! www.amazon.com/Follow-My-Feet-Unlikely-Candidates/dp/B01BBIP3SS/ref=pd_rhf_cr_p_img_4?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=1GZJR6YS682VM6T6TC13
Not from this album. But can you analyse and break down the lyrics for lupe fiascos-mural
I really think a lot of them have ties to Pete wentz’s bipolar disorder (hence the title MANIA) and it’s definitely shown in young and menace in the lyrics as he’s facing a manic episode, and in expensive mistake, as bipolar disorder and mania tend to lead people to do irrational things like buy things they can’t afford or ruin relationships. There’s a lot more examples that I’d like to into but I must study for a chemistry exam
One thing I noticed about Fall Out Boy is that the words in their songs aren't always the right meaning... They reference a lot of dark stuff in some of their songs, so in Heaven's Gate, I think Fall Out Boy is referring to Heaven's Gate, a UFO Cult that ended up committing mass suicide. I think the line in the chorus, "Give me a boost over Heaven's Gate" means more of a "Help me get over these suicidal thoughts". The next part, "Cause everything else is a substitute for your love" means "every other act of love you have shown me doesn't prove you care like this would". Just my thoughts but it does explain the ballad and a lot of other lyrics in the song...
The Pop Song Professor I’m pretty sure the order you talked about the songs is the iTunes order which isn’t correct according to Pete Wentz on twitter
I find Fall Out Boy to be a lyrically complex band. That view hasn't changed with this album. By lyrically complex I mean it's often difficult to find a single consistent message in one song. There are usually many different ideas in one song, sometimes they even seem to contradict each other. Even when something seems like a love song it's twisted in some way to make you wonder what the writer's real message is. And because Fall Out Boy often don't use gender pronouns or give any indication of gender it makes you wonder about the ultimate intention of the song and who it's actually about. (In fact they used the male pronoun in Irresistible - "mon cheri" - and that's the cause of some discussion in the RUclips comments for the video.)
Erline Andrews this album was... meh. i think lyrically and word play wise, they could do better. i mean, there was a lot of repetition too, like, it feels like laziness? i loved their last few albums, but this one... lyrics wise? it just felt, boring
"there was a lot of repetition too" As I said in another comment, I believe people who talk about repetition don't understand how pop music is supposed to work. It's supposed to be simple. There's supposed to be repetition. The trick is to still pack meaning and a certain level of complexity while keeping it simple. FOB does this so well many people don't recognize it. I admire that a lot.
I'm a writer and I find listening to FOB helps teach me how to communicate meaning in as few words as possible.
About repetition: Repetition gives a pop song its "stickiness". It helps the song - or at least that line - get in the listener's head and stay there. That's what you want as a pop songwriter.
FINALLY SOMEBODY WHO ISN'T BASHING FOB, THANKS
You're welcome. :)
Agreed!
Vicky Masi y E S
The other 5 of listed are actually the ones that I felt more Fall Out Boy. Heavens Gate, Wilson, Stay Frosty, Bishops Knife Trick, etc are similar to their album “Folie a Deux”, which I love.
Arcane Senzen exactly!
Champion is post-hiatus FOB.
And I don’t feel like all of the songs or most of the songs are about being in love with a girl. Fall Out Boy generally talks about how their lives have been through their careers as they have grown up in the spotlight. It was harsh for them, but they use music to get through everything. All of the songs from this album are philosophical with only HOLD ME TIGHT OR DON’T being about a guy who is in love with a girl who he knows he can’t be with, but will do anything he can to do so. (Video and behind the scenes video explains that)
So before anyone says Fall Out Boy is just another boy band who only writes about girls, they’re not. Sure, they may write some love songs, but every song is philosophical, deep, and gets to the hearts of every misunderstood fan of theirs.
Not every song, but a lot do.
eau de résistance

translated to english: water resistance
Daniyal Awan Its fucking cringe

RipTide cringe fest
So we know that Pete likes Japan or have been to Japan, and at vending machines they have milk tea called "royal milk tea". It comes out of the vending machine hot so i guess that explains "stay frosty"
What I found to be a common theme in the movie is like public celebrity mistakes or meltdowns. Like, in Young and Menace, they reference Britney Spears with "oops, I did it again" and of course, as you mentioned the Tonya Harding and there's a couple others too :)
I’m not a very big FOB fan either. But...you know what band I do like??? MCR! And I would love for you to explain some of their songs!!!
Random Person YES!
Random Person i like your eyebrows
Random Person Awh I love FOB...almost as much as I love your persistence to get him to do an MCR song! Keep up the good work!
Best band ever
Random Person yeeeeeeeee ❤️❤️
this was a great video but there is one thing i disagree on with you and that is your theory on the last of the real ones. im not saying it's a bad theory because it could very well be just about a girl but the way i always saw the song was that it was about the fans who stuck with fob after the hiatus. they're "the last of the real ones" or the last of the real fans who are there for fob no matter what they do. "you're the last of a dying breed" is talking about the few fans that have stuck around. "i wonder if your therapist knows everything about me" is talking about how they wonder if the kids mention everything about their band and how its helped them. "that ultra-kind of love you never walk away from" again referencing the way that dying breed of fans love the band so much they just can't walk away. this theory may not be correct but i just wanted to show another way of looking at the song
That’s what I thought to!!!
You should do some older Fall Out Boy songs like Dance, Dance or Golden. Just do some more Fall Out Boy songs please.
Thank you so much for not attacking Fall Out Boy’s new album!
it's so nice to see a ""review"" or explanation of this album without it being tore down by people that still want fob to constantly make songs that sound exactly like take this to your grave :)))
Madison Dennis i know right.
Also, please do Folie a Deux by fall out boy, its their most “complicated” lyrical album :) just found out bout ur channel and its great!
You: They keep talking about this *girl* they need to have.
Me, an intellectual: IT'S GAY IT'S ALL GAY PETE WENTZ IS TALKING ABOUT BOYS

So your telling me that young and menace sounds like normal fall out boy? What are you smoking?!??!
Explain "Master of Puppets" by Metallica
UnamusedDeathGod Going off of this. Can we get a Master of Puppets album explanation
Oh Damn it's SamKaBam EVEN BETTER
Agreed.
“Young and a Menace”
nO
The song title is Young and Menace. Thank you.
Plus the songs are not necessarily about a girl. And, fandom-wise, they're probably about Patrick.
To me the lyrics of Wilson are old school fall out boy
Pepsi Fifa I agree its classic FOB
Young And Menace was the best and actually the most different song on the album.
It’s weird, because I’ve been trying to be a big supporter for M A N I A, and some songs were definitely given more care than others. It kind of just fell flat for me, but I liked a few songs.
Same
ineedmyspace 034 I loved every single song on the playlist but cheers to your opinion
ineedmyspace 034 I loved stay frosty and heavens gate but I really hated sunshine riptide
I had the horrible feeling when listening to bishop’s knife trick (I think, or sunshine riptide) that it was about them doing their last album. Like they kept singing about city lights taking them back - which is like them coming home from tour and relating that to blues makes me think that they’re not happy with touring and everything
Please do What A Catch, Donnie by Fall Out Boy!!
I was tempted to stop at 1:37. There were far more ideas on the album.
Erline Andrews agreed, I kind of expected more dissection of the lyrics from a professor but he kept it pretty simple in his explanations and didn’t really reveal anything I couldn’t interpret after one listen.
I’m still very interested in the deeper meaning of Bishops Knife Trick. My thought is they possibly could be alluding to either finally moving past Pete’s addiction issues (“these are the Last blues we’re ever gonna have”) or possibly something alluding to them contemplating if this will be their last album/tour. The line “the glow of the cities below lead us back to the places that we never should’ve left” gives me a feeling that they’re tired and homesick, and conflicted about whether they should keep doing this. Could be dead wrong and just overthinking it, but that’s the vibe I got.
'My thought is they possibly could be alluding to either finally moving past Pete’s addiction issues (“these are the Last blues we’re ever gonna have”)' This is my thinking as well. There's no reason to believe they're thinking of ending the band. If they were, why not announce it and make this tour their farewell tour? No doubt that will boost ticket sales.
Wilson (Expensive Mistakes) references a movie called "Castaway " with Tom Hank's imaginary volleyball friend named Wilson. If you don't believe me, watch the music video. They sneak the volleyball in there!
PLEASE do something of marina's. Maybe primadonna or Hollywood?
I do like a couple of her songs.
Omg I love this bc even though there were songs he didn’t like he was so genuinely nice about it and it made me really happy😂
WOAH WOAH WOAH HEAVEN'S GATES WASN'T VERY FALL OUT BOY? HAVE YOU HEARD WHAT A CATCH DONNIE?
People who use repetitiveness as a criticism don't understand how music - in particular pop music - works.
Erline Andrews but like you said, it's to an extent. personally, the line was crossed. just look at champion or young and menace... or even the last of the real ones :/
I was just listening to Champion. It's a great song. It's a narrative. It's bare bones, but it is a narrative. I think the decision to keep it bare bones was deliberate. I don't think Pete Wentz has suddenly become lazy. I suspect he decided to leave space for the listener to use their imagination and also for Patrick Stump to show off his voice. The last few seconds of the song was Patrick showing off his voice. That's it. To show off his voice he doesn't need a new line.
True. I don't think I criticized them for that? It was just unique. But to be fair, a song that's less repetitive often (not always) has more unique content and things being said.
I guess it depends on what you're looking for in a song. Because you analyze lyrics you probably think the more of them the better. I like lyrics too, but for me the music and vocals are equally important. For instance, I love Fall Out Boy's Ghostbusters remake that was so pilloried. The lyrics are simple and not very interesting but I love what Patrick Stump does with his voice on the track. The music itself is exciting too.
A singer can imply things with his voice that aren't necessarily said in the lyrics. The way Patrick Stump sings "I'm not afraid" contradicts the words. He is afraid! I love that.
i really like ur channel but i still want mama by my chemical romance but if u dont want 2 its fine xDD
but the song is really deep xDD
that emo gal Oh yes I would really like to hear the explanation of mama too!
i really like your videos! i’m surprised you don’t have more subscribers, you deserve more!
Aw, thanks! I hope you join. :)
As a FOB fan I found this very interesting and it's nice to see you actually recognise the lyrical deepness. Could you please make a video on Bastille's 'Wild World'? It's about how this world has become messed up and has gone mad. There are a lot of deep songs on it (19 songs in total on the 'complete edition')
For the new FOB albums I have theorized that each album has a theme:
Save Rock and Roll being about returning.
AB/AP I believe being about some sort of break up or about a certain relationship.
Mania being mostly about cleansing bad influences and keeping the good influences in tact.
None of this is definite what so ever but those are the trends I could find.
*Screams into the void* PETE LOVES MIKEY SO MUCH HOLY HELL
The Last of The Real ones is about your love for anything - Pete Wentz even said so
I love Mania
Would love an explanation of Not warriors by Waterparks!
Great song
I agree 100%
I'm not such a fan of the post-hiatus stuff, but I'm so in love with their earlier albums. The new lyrics are alright, but the old ones are so packed with meaning and it's truly poetry. I'd suggest going back if you want more interesting lyrics to dissect! :)
Can you explain the deeper meaning of GINASFS or It's Hard To Say "I Do", When I Don't?
I love the song wilson. I also like the lyric " i hope the roof falls off and we get blown up into space "
LOVE this video!! I suggest doing one of the best FOB songs (in my opinion) What A Catch, Donnie. it's very philosophical and i think it would make a great video
Young and Menace sounds like a Fall Out Boy song?? Ummm, how about no?
Not sure if its your style, but Son Lux's "Alternate World" and "No Crimes" (even the "Lanterns" album as a whole) are something I'd like explained.
you: THERE'S THIS GIRL AND I GOTTA HAVE HER SHE'S THE ONLY ONE FOR ME
pete: THERE'S THIS GUY NAMED PATRICK STUMP AND I GOTTA HAVE HIM HE'S THE ONLY ONE FOR ME
edit: patrick: thanks pete :)
First off, I want to say that while I am a bit of a bigger FOB fan than you are it seems, I agree that this album's is a lot of fun and it sounds like they tried a few new things that I really dig, so I could definitely go for that.
Second, I want to let you know that I love the atmosphere of your videos and the cool peeps who watch them, especially since theres a lot of twentyonepilots content on here that I really dig, and everyone here seems to share a lot of my music taste!
Thirdly, I do have a bit of what may be an odd request: We're a small band called "Leaving Cardboard Houses" from Columbus, OH, and we've been releasing music for the past year or so, and we're really trying to work our way toward gaining some notoriety. Our music is typically compared to twentyonepilots, which is probably fair haha, and most of our fanbase consists of crossover fans from the clique or PATD. We released a song a few months ago called "Art of Distraction" that we're extremely proud of, and put a lot of heart into wiring and producing. I was curious if you might be willing to give it a listen and possibly dissect it if you're interested? The song deals with a lot of personal themes related to pride, and I'd absolutely love to hear your analysis! If you're interested in checking it out, here's the link: ruclips.net/video/GZbxrqZcp8k/видео.html
Thank you either way!
1. :)
2. Thanks!
3. Shoot me an email. I liked the song you linked. I can't do a video about it because I have to stay on brand, but I'd love to get to know you and maybe share your stuff on Twitter. Who knows what may come of this. :)
ok awesome!
I was scared to watch this bc I thought it'd be another video bashing FOB but thankfully it's not!
If you haven't heard their album Folie à Deux, I highly recommend it. It is unlike any other Fall Out Boy album.
When you finally find one that's not crushing the album.. But you don't care and your opinion of the album won't change
THANK YOU FOR THIIISSSS
You're welcome!
You're welcome!
First review of this album that I’ve seen that’s positive
Pete said that “Stay Frosty Royal Milk Tea” is named that because Royal Milk Tea is delicious and people in the military say “Stay Frosty” to remind each other to stay calm and cool. Thats it apparently. Typical Pete.
DO INFINITY HIGH THATS THEIR BEST ALBUM BY FAR
aaaah you should make us a Spotify playlist based on your favourites songs, love your videos ❤️
Oh, that would be fun! I might do that...
Its an older FOB song but I would like to see a break down of "Its hard to say i do when i dont" because the imagery is very wild and i feel like i have a good idea about what it means but i would love to see anothers take
Anyone else find it odd that fob's new songs are about them being young, when they're old now?
Thank you so much for this video 😍😍😍
You're welcome! :)
The Pop Song Professor I want you to know that I'm a fan of Fall Out Boy since 2008
That's dedication!
The Pop Song Professor my very first song from them is You Don't Know Who I Think I Am?
Please do Know , Real or Remeber this from NF
Have you done panic at the disco yet? If you haven’t you should!
Definitely. :)
The Pop Song Professor yesssss ❤️ glad i’m subbed
Me too! ;)
Can you explain Mansion by NF?
Yo you gotta try and break down a Dance Gavin Dance song! That'd be something else 😅😂
hi! a comment is that youre using the “wrong” order for the songs, since there was a mistake on spotify/itunes. The songs go Stay Frosty, Last of real ones, hold me tight, wilson church heavens gate champion young and menace bishops :)
forgot, sunshine riptide is before young and menace andafter champion!
I would be absolutely stoked if you could explain the Vessels album by Starset. Starset are a phenomenonal band and I think it's definitely worth a listen
Lol at 1:32 "This girl gotta gotta gotta have her"
UMM...
NO....
WE ALL know this isn't some girl....
we all know it's Mikey Way
Idk if it’s too late but you should do ‘how to write like Lin Manuel Miranda’!
Oh my gosh. yes. That would be awesome. It might be far off, but I wish I'd thought of that six months ago.
YES I'VE BEEN OBSESSED WITH THE WHOLE MANIA ALBUM
:D
I thought that HMTOD and LOTRO were about a obsessive relationship with your significant other and a manic type of love.
I liked M A N I A
I thought that "the stuffing that comes out of you" was a reference to Foile... At least that was the imagery it brought me.
Also, Wilson, I think, was a tribute to their old fan base/ the people who have been listening to them since they had a more "emo" sound and fan base. .
Subscribed after watching this, keep it up!
Thank you and welcome!
I don’t think the tittle “stay frosty royal milk tea” means anything cause when Pete Wentz got asked why they picked the tittle he said “stay frosty is a military saying and royal milk is...good? I don’t know”
Unless only Peter knows what the tittle actually means
Ok but FOB fans can’t deny that at least one of the songs on Mania was written by Pete about Mikey Way
Yes, they can... hmmm...
Lmao
Just a friendly reminder to do leviathan by g eazy :) a migos song would be cool too. Nice vid!!!
Wow, thanks for this video :)
Can you please do a review on The Last of the Real Ones?
I dont know is because i've been thinking about the liyrics lately and i have this theory: According to the lyrics "I write your name in the wet concrete, I wonder if your therapist knows is everything about me. I'm here in search of your glory, there's been a million before me, that ultra kind of love..." *dosen't it sounds like a letter from the fans to fall out boy, or maybe every fan ever with their artists and idols?*
This might change the whole meaning of the song. I don't know, just a thought, but i would really like you analize this song please. :)
It's a possibility.
I feel like it's more than a girl he has to be with. I feel like there's more of a "she's holy, she's not human" I feel like there's more of a "she is a goddess or something more than just a girl" in this album which is really personified in last of the real ones and church and heaven gate. But we'll never know unless fob tells us
You should do llamania!! Theyre the original demos for mania!!
I'm not a huge Fall Out Boy fan but I loved this video, thank you!
Thanks for watching!
Have you heard about the tøp theory that new music is coming out tomorrow? I think its BS but still...
Can my heart handle the possibility? Sigh...
I've been watching your channel for a while now and I really like it, you should do an explanation about Paramore's album After Laughter 💕💕
I did one or two...
How fall out boy writes lyrics/songs ++++++++++++++1
I think you just inspired me. I was wondering who to do next, and I may just do this. Going to go assess this now. It'll still be a few weeks before I could release something since it takes so much work though...
Patrick has actually joked before that Pete has a bunch of scattered ideas and they put them together like the random refrigerator magnet words. lol
I went to Walmart, and bought Blurryface for my friend’s birthday. But thennnn, I saw Mania. I bought both lmao.
That opening music 💀💀
What about the young and menace music video, then the champion video? The kid is dealing with his parents constantly fighting, and his abusive alcoholic father. He saw them as llamas, which I guess he sees them as people who aren't really his parents in his eyes.. I don't know.. That's my thought.
At the end of the Champion music video, a kid/teenager who looks like an older version of the kid from the young and menace video..
The music vids would definitely make an interesting analysis.
This is hilarious
some is accurate but some isn't at all but he says it with confidence and i can't help but laugh
Being overly-confident is certainly one of my weaknesses...
I honestly think you are thinking too lightly on the songs lyrical content. For me, there's two levels to understanding lyrics. The first is kind of just taking the lyrics for face value with a couple of metaphors here and there which I think is what you did. The second is going deeper into the song (some call this "overthinking" but as a songwriter myself, i would love for people to do this to my songs) and understanding the contextual background. Songs like these don't generally come out of nothing .. to me they seem more political than personal. BUT each to their own and I respect your view on the album. Great video : )
read this friendly reminder before you comment: not everything's about your ships
I DO LOVE IT! Thanks
As a huge fob fan, my opinion on mania is it’s a super rushed album by the record label. It’s not them by all means but I particularly blame their label for bringing out not the best of FOB.
Hey, This is not a comment about FOB. Sorry. Can you do Zombie by the Cranberries? Maybe include the symbolism in the music video?
Hold Me Tight Or Don't is my favorite too well is either that one or Wilson
My church is hot topic
Will you make a video about the new song "city in a garden"
Fall Out Boy always have more to their songs than what is showing, always too philosophical
