One LCA Tejas has crashed recently which shows that any electro-mechanical device can develop faults. The MiG 29's RD 33 engine was a viable option for the Tejas MK1As when sanctions were imposed on India in the past by US or EU. The Tejas program would not have suffered such delays. What was more important gor India a depleting fighter squadron strength or more overhauls ? India kept going back to the same country which has acted against it. Atleast now in the next 10 yrs the Kaveri program shud be completed in various thrust configurations.

There's no way Indian Navy will be replacing the Mig 29's by 2030. Rafale has got orders already from other nations and TEDBF is not on the picture. We will have to upgrade the MiG 29's extensively for both the naval and the airforce variant.
Initially I was against buying any Russian jet, but seeing the delay in out jet programs (desi or foreign one), just buy those 21 used Mig 29s from Russia at throwaway price. This should give us some cushion without making a hole in our pockets.

Our MiG29s had always been the war time counter to the Pak F16s and now the Chinese J10s. Both rivals are getting updates , F16 Block 72 all over world and J10s in China. Unless we have our Tejas Mk2 flying, MiG29s need to be upgraded with AESA radar too and advanced upgrade packages. Maybe bringing in ops the radars to be used on Tejas Mk2 beforehand on an operational platform would help develop tech further for the Mk2. The additional order of the Tejas Mk1A , will definitely delay the Tejas Mk2 at the current rate of production.

RD 33 is backup for tejas mk1a, if USA somday decided to stop the delivery of F404 we can use these. That's why we are buying lot of tejas mk1a. But for mk2 india has no alternative to F414 thats why government is so cautious

What’s there to absorb ? 80% of AL31 is sourced from India now. Since you have a process in place they don’t want to recreate process and make engines costlier
Russian engines are not much reliable and need a lot of maintenance and their life span is short too . So india needs a TOT from the UK, France or US engines

Can Indians make a better and improvised version of RD 33 engine? It matters, till now why drdo or HAL or any private enterprise has not learned to make improvised reverse engineered engine till now. It's wonder some. I always get same answer, mastering the engineer is different ball game ok so is the case with India yet not able to make reliable and upgradable military rifles for its arms forces. Very funny.
