  • Making the switch from "hobbyist" to "pro" hasn't been as easy as I thought, but it didn't half give me a LOT to talk about. Being autistic turned out to be far more relevant to my future plans than I expected. Part of the "Autism and Change" theme.

Thanks, Quinn. Interesting video. I'm glad you aren't quitting RUclips. I always immediately click when I see you have a new video. Of all the autism creators, I like you best. I like your quirky self and your humor. I wish you good health and prosperity. I like the orderly manner of the information and I feel like I'm learning something others don't cover.

It’s so lovely to have you back! I’m one of the 2/3 who discovered your channel last year and *devoured* all of it, most of it twice. I’ve really missed your calming, positive influence and can’t wait to see Part 2 and beyond. I wish you every success in this (newish) endeavour, and consider my Patreon contribution money well spent. ❤

I took the uncertain do-it-my-way path in my life about two decades ago - not knowing whether I'd make a living or not. My wife was very supportive which was a necessity, and I couldn't have done it without her. Even tho I could have made a lot more money on the more traditional path I'm very happy where I am, working on my own schedule and in my own way. I hope you the best whatever you end up doing and I'll be here looking forward to anything you release.

You don't need to change titles or thumbnails frequently, or to release on a regular schedule. I have all notifications turned on, and the excitement of seeing that little brain pop up is good for me, reinforcing that surprises do not always equal bad. You don't need the algorithm to send you to other people's feeds either, as evidenced by all the people who have found you --many through personal referrals such as those I have given or seconded -- even though you were not getting much posted.
I am half-hoping you will settle on "RUclips advocacy educator." Not only would it be a waste of your talents to try to focus on only one of those, but I suspect the most sustainable course would be to have something going on in each area at all times, so that you can be productive but flexible enough to make use of hyperfocus and isolate to recharge when necessary and produce tools and curricula which can bring in some income even when you ate able to get very little time free from self and family care to devote to work.

Last time I heard a person on RUclips use so many metaphors at a beginning of a video, talking about their Autistic life, I mentioned a tv show before, I used to watch called Angie Tribeca, when it used to be on Channel 4, the amount of metaphors used in that show was a lot, and the people on the show literally did what was said, like take a seat, that person would pick up a chair, it was heavy into comedy.

Many times in my life, I have felt sort of caught in a spider web of thoughts, looking for "it," the perfect solution to everything that is going on in my life, ha ha. Him Quinn:: I'm glad you haven't thrown in the RUclips towel, as you're my favorite autistic RUclipsr. You're closer to my age, as far as I can tell (almost 65) and don't talk at the frenetic pace of many younger autistic RUclipsrs, who take the generally manic pace of RUclips to nerve-wracking extremes, along with jumpy editing. (I understand that's a part of both autism and youth for many, and I assume there has to be a reason for most RUclipsrs to do it, the vast majority of whom are NT.. It just makes me jittery.) But I digress. I'll have to live with the hair, although my autism makes change difficult for me, but it's your head. 😉 If I were to make RUclips videos (I have no plans to, as I'm a writer and my retirement is allegedly meant to allow me to write) I'd use some of your methods: as much factual stuff as the audience can take, with some passion for emphasis, along with quirky quips that probably only 7 people would get. So, looking forward to more from my #1 autistic RUclipsr.

I can learn scheduling, but what to write about is tougher than I thought it would be. I get the sense after all these years that I have masked myself from myself, so I have a lot of detective work ahead of me. Onwards and upwards, though ...

It's been a surprising time and revealed some unexpected realities that I think are worth sharing. Writing it down can be difficult, but I often find it remarkably cathartic too. Reading your own feelings back from the page can trigger emotional reactions quite different from saying the same words out loud.

Guidance mentoring other autistic children, as only a autistic person can do through their lived experience, but while I was on RUclips and I joined some autistic groups, parents trying to help and answer their questions I was attacked by people who hate autistic people. To get around the repeating videos that start to repop up on my feed, I always like the video. Having a great memory also tells me that I have seen the video. I have found that these cute pet videos are the worst at reposting them. One of which was a couple of roommates that would each film the video with their phones, and each post the video from their phones point of view.
Anyway, I wish you luck in the growth of your channel. Have you reached out to Dan from the Aspie World, though he does a lot of list videos. As for someone with AuDHD, I find video times over 20 minutes harder for me to pay attention throughout. Unless it is my obsessive interest. I guess Autism is one of them, because I can tolerate up to 1 hour videos depending on which channel is running the video. News and such, heck if it is longer than 8 min, I will not watch it. Too much negativity and opinion pieces and talking heads. I want the news not some ‘expert opinion’

You didn't address why you switched to a white background. What was the purpose? The way it's been done here is not very audience/viewer friendly. You've previously done a great job in terms of brand identity, and this specific change goes hard against that.
There are plenty of successful RUclips channels that primarily use black backgrounds, and in your case it works especially well.
It seems like you're making and planning to make changes that will destroy or otherwise dampen what has made your content "stand out" and be uniquely valuable. You can be successful on RUclips with the format that you'd already been using, in fact with the way you had been approaching things (aside from lacking consistency) you have a better chance than most... it just takes time.
Concerned and hoping the next video brings clarification and reflects a more accurate understanding of what actually needs to change. Wishing you well!

Thanks for commenting. It'll be answered on screen, but in short, it's about freeing up scarce time & resources. Using a physical white background saves me hours of editing time, and since my time & energy are stretched right now, it's a logical choice. There's several parts to this story and all will become clear over the next few videos. I've started with establishing the choices before me. What choices I've made and why is all coming up over the next couple of videos, but it's a long story and I can't make it all at once😉 If there's sufficient curiosity I might do a "desk reveal" type video at some point, but I'm really not sure how much interest there would be?
