  • Classic Game Room reviews the TURBO TOUCH 360 for Sega Genesis from Triax, a game controller where the traditional d-pad has been replaced with a touch sensitive pad. Each button mapped to Sega Genesis control has a turbo button and the controller gamepad has a bright yellow logo that screams "TURBO TOUCH 360". While this controller is not one of the better Sega Genesis (Sega Mega Drive) controllers it is a unique collector's item and an interesting idea. This CGR videogame hardware review for the Sega Genesis accessory, Turbo Touch 360, has video footage for the review of the Turbo Touch 360 from Triax for Megadrive.

    Holy crap. I've been trying to find information on this controller for YEARS. Unfortunately, all I had to go on were some vague memories of television adverts from a decade and a half ago or more.
    I didn't even know the name of the controller. Congratulations, CGR, I think you just made my weekend. Kick awesome.

    The biggest problem with a touch controller like this one is that the game no longer responds to you pressing a direction, but to having your finger on the direction. So every time you want to go to the neutral position, you have to either take your finger off the d-pad or move it back to the center. Sometimes you want to have your finger on one of the directional buttons ready to press it, this doesn't allow that.

      Meh.... I had this controller (and my NES) from the time I was 11 to the time I was 19, and I never had any problems except for one of the Turbo buttons getting stuck in. I got pretty good with it and keeping my thumb hovered off and only pressing when I wanted to go in a direction. Also could do really fine "edge taps" (very very briefly touching left or right in a Mario or a Mega Man to walk step by incremental step).

    • @dacypher22
      @dacypher22 4 года назад +1

      Yes! It is such a common finger movement when playing games that you don't even realize you are doing it. You are running forward by pushing right on the D-pad. You stop, but you expect that you are going to probably have to start running left or right again at a moment's notice, so you leave your finger on the right or left side of the D-pad but you don't press it down. With the Turbo Touch 360, you can't easily do that. You have to lift your finger off of the touchpad to make it stop registering. You don't even realize how much you miss the ability to do that until you have one of these horrid controllers in your hands.

      I don't know about never wearing out. My controller is always sensing the up on the dpad so when I try to play street fighter with it my character is always jumping.

    I have one of these. I don't remember why my parents thought this thing was a good second controller to buy, but they bought it when I was like 3-4 and it's been second player's controller ever since. I just dug it out of a box in my closet to try it again, not as bad as I remember it being but certainly not as good as a regular D-pad. Cool design though, and I can't help but think how touch input has taken over mobile gaming.

  • @WiiClassic2usb

    It's not because people have "big thumbs" that they hate the 360 pad, it's that the 360 has a rocker panel Dpad like a Saitek P880 I used to have on PC, it's too easy to slip into diagonals when you just wanna go straight. Nintendo's Dpad is a circular disc over 4 rubber depressors and the disc has pits under it for the rubber bits to fit into. It's also ever so slightly beveled in the center so you can hit "diagonal only" easier, it sits on a orb-like fulcrum for better rotation.

  • @FusionDeveloper
    @FusionDeveloper 14 лет назад

    I had one of these for NES, but i couldn't help but to press down on the pad. its advertisement was "no more sore thumbs" (maybe not those words, but they showed a red side of a thumb with a red circle with a red cross though it.
    You can get a 6 button tiny working genesis control from DealExtreme for $4.55 (temporarly sold out, but i got one and it works) sku.30530 but one of the buttons for the circuit board is messed up, idk if it can be fixed.

    I had one of these for a year or so. It was the only controller I had for a while when I got the Genesis second hand, so I had to learn how to play games with it. Try putting it down and use your index finger. It's how I played all games for quite a long time. And then I got one of the 6-button controllers with a d-pad and turbo switches and all that, and I think I just... threw this one away.

    I had one of Touch Turbo 360, but it was for the NES, and in Grey, and Red, It works well, once you get use to the concept of the whole thing. After getting use to the thing, it was really had to go back to a normal controller for the NES. I think i paid all of $7 for mine on a Wal-mart clearance rack sale back in the day LOL!

    We had the turbo touch 360 for the SNES just for fighting games like Street Fighter 2 and Super Street Fighter 2. It was a good cheat for some moves but it was not striking when it got real intense. Good in design, not sensitive enough for other games.

  • @ChicoEdge
    @ChicoEdge 14 лет назад

    If memory serves, this was marketed towards fans of tournament fighting games like SFII and MK. The problem is that when you're playing a fighting game you probably rest your thumb on the pad so you can instantly move your character or fire off a special move. Well, if you rest your thumb on that pad the controller will think you want to move your character and that leaves you open to attacks.

    I had the NES version of this, and I don't remember them being too bad. Touch was different, yes, but you did have those soft bumps you could still feel unlike the virtual D-pads you get in modern smartphone games. So at least you're getting SOME feedback, just not as much as you might like.
    Also, the NES version of the Turbo Touch 360™ had separate turbo A and B buttons rather than switches which made it slightly easier to switch between normal and autofire if you needed too, so there's that. All in all, I wouldn't rank it in a top 10 Worst Controller list like some guy at IGN did.
    Oh, and also, by now, we're all aware of Valve's gamepad for their "Steam Machine" which has not one, but TWO touchpads in place of analog sticks. How will that work, I wonder? Probably like a handheld version of a laptop trackpad or the touchpad on a DualShock 4 as far as I can guess.

  • @escapenguin
    @escapenguin 4 года назад

    This thing worked really well once you got used to it. You could precisely pull off special moves in games. I got one because the regular controller kept tearing up my thumb. But then the 6-button Genesis with the sweet D-pad came out and this wasn't so necessary anymore.

  • @elbryan42

  • @WiiClassic2usb
    @WiiClassic2usb 11 лет назад

    1:47 - It isn't -supposed- to be pushed, it's supposed to be -glided- over. It's actually a nice design because the Dpad will never need to have its rubber contacts taken out and replaced from too much heavy play. Unfortunately most kids who got them didn't read the little disclaimer note that said "read this before you start playing - DON'T TRY TO FORCEFULLY PRESS LIKE YOU DO A NORMAL DPAD, YER GUNNA BREAK THE SENSOR." - 2:13 -- It's -not- analog. It's basically a hat switch. 8 Directions.

    PSA: I went through two of these when I was a kid. The whole unit feels like cheap plastic. Within a few weeks, the turbo switches above the A, B & C buttons would break internally. It is possible to fix with hot glue. In fact, I reinforced the flimsy switches internally with a dab of hot glue to prevent them from breaking. The result was a studier feeling switch that lasted for years.
    The touch D-pad still sucks :/

I owned it in the pal reg for my megadrive and its no use for platformers beat em ups or anything at all really although suprising to know it does work for colums very very well! as you can slide it must faster then a d-pad if you own one try it! • @MistaMaddog247
    @MistaMaddog247 13 лет назад

    I ordered one for my NES. It does take a long time to get used to it. You have to not only slide your thumb w/o pressing anything, but put your thumb on the center nub to not move. Once you work with it, it's pretty decent and plays best with 8-directional shooters. I was even able to get Mario to jump backwards :)
    But after while the sensor pad died out and I had to get a replacement from Triax. That thing also went dead even quicker. So it's good for a display but do not use for gaming!

    I got caught-up in the hype of these controllers in the early 90's and picked one up as a kid. EVERYTHING felt off about it. There are so many common controller techniques you can't easily do with these that you will instantly find it is hobbling you to try to use it. It can take hours of failing just to get close to the level you were already at with the default controller. As others have mentioned, this was essentially a preview of playing mobile games with on-screen D-pads. There is absolutely no reason you would want to use it when perfectly functional controllers were available. This is the controller you gave to your brother's teenage friend when you were 10 so you would have a chance against him at Mortal Kombat.

    D pads were cool for old platform games because they had a lot to do with up down or left righ and used angles very little., But for modern interactive and racing games analog is a must, cause of the precision needed.
    That is were the turbo touch fails it was not responsive like a D pad nor did it have analog precision like the Atari rollerball.

    More like the things on a Laptop that act as the mouse, except split up into the eight individual directions used on most 8bit and 16bit games. This isn't an "analog" pad, there's no inbetweens and there's no rubber depressors to push down so movement is instantaneous, resulting in somewhat of a "learning curve" you have to get used to.

    1. Why does the Wii classic controller feel like an Xbox 360 controller and not an N64 or Gamecube controller?
    2. The 3 innovations that I mentioned (analog stick, rumble, and analog shoulder triggers) are more relevant to modern gaming than anything you mentioned.
    3. Sega and Microsoft have the d-pad and left analog positions are reversed.
    4. Both versions of the Saturn controller had the modern boomerang shape.
    5. The Genesis controller had slanted button arrangement (diamond style) first.

    The touch pad is basically a smaller version of the rear touchpad on the ps vita so it's the future of video games

    Whenever there's an advertisement before the video plays, I mute the computer and look the other way until it's over. I want the money they spend on that ad to be completely wasted. No more ads!!!

    This vs. Valve reminds me of something Scott Adams wrote, I think it was in The Dilbert Principle... something about how you should never be the bold innovator who tries something new, you should always be the one who sees innovators try and inevitably screw up so you can fix the problems and make something people actually want with less R&D.
