The fact that he recognizes and is trying to play the best is a huge bonus for me. Neil Peart's drumming is not easy to play and this song in particular is a huge test in stamina. This drummer trying to learn Rush is all that matters. Everything else is just secondary. He did a great job btw :D
Okay here's a story for you: When I was young I always wanted to play the drums. I begged my parents for a drum set and they told me that, not only was it too expensive, but it was waaay too loud. I ended up going to a friend's house a few months later and, WTF HE HAD A DRUM SET! I was psyched! I played for hours with him instructing me (we were about 15, but the guy could play pretty well in my opinion)...and I couldn't keep a simple beat. MY FEET DON'T WORK WITH MY HANDS. Consequently, I've been playing guitar for about 12 years now and I love it. I respect the coordination of drummers and I can hear the rhythm better than most people. This guy did a great-fucking-job. With that being said - anyone who tries to talk shit on this guy's cover (no matter how trivial the "ride or hi-hat" argument) is obviously just trying to get attention. Rush isn't easy on guitar either (Lifeson does the same tricks with his rhythm that Neil does) - so I can understand when you miss a note or don't play it exactly in time. If you don't understand that you have no reason to argue it. If you can't play it like him, then don't give advice. I can't play like him, I respect the hell out of the guy. Awesome fucking cover!
this is why my band wont play Rush Covers.....every air drummer and air guitar player rips the shit out you for missing a note. Rush fans are weird, its like they think they'r e in the band.
Indeed. It's off a bit in a few areas and slightly less refined (what can one expect), but overall, it's great...more than good enough to be in any band.
i'm 18 and my study of music is me, myself, and I :) my dad's friend asked me had i ever heard tom sawyer by rush? i said no then i learned it 100% by ear and now here it is up on youtube..i'm just kickin ass and takin names haha
I only saw one glaring 'edit' ... Pretty impressive. Neil makes it look so easy. But, when you watch this, it kinda gives you a feel of just how technical the drum part is. Well done
The one thing that really gets me is that no matter how good a drummer is they always seem just a bit off playing rush. Neil Peart has this weird perfect timing that you can hear in every single song. It's like he has a built in metronome in his freaking head. Hell the whole band pretty much has perfect timing.
my son is 12 and has been playing drums for 6 years....this song is on his must learn short list.. he's constantly pulling up videos of people playing this.. one day you'll see him :)
Dude, you're playing is PERFECTION in this song. I am so impressed. I have played and taught music for so many years. My band played this song when I was in HS many years ago and our drummer was wicked awesome but you are way better. Props. Please keep up your playing for ever. You are so, so talented. And you are so relaxed and make it look so easy.
I've watched probably 2 dozen of these videos, where drummers cover this song. This is probably the best I've seen. Incredible. One gets tired just watching. Great job.
Dude, you should have a million views. It's very refreshing to see a kid your age paying tribute to the best. Keep it up pal, you are the next generation!
Great job on the song... Don't listen to the guys ragging on you on what you missed or what you did wrong. Neil Pert has said him self in interviews that this song is hard to play and to this day he still makes mistakes playing this song.
Excellent job, nice set up ,nicely tuned skins, great cymbals. great role model . . . . . Peart is such a great musician to try to cover , every song is such a challenge not to mention a work out mentally and physically . . . . thank God for Neil Peart!
I thought he was pounding the skins with authority, and isnt THAT what makes a hard rock drummer good? Its a rock song;not a symphony.Bang your heads to the rhythm and the beat.Rush may be technical but its still rocknroll to me.
No, pounding the skins has nothing to do with being good. all that is is just having a good time rockin out until u bust a head lol but being able to play smoothly and confidently no matter what you are playing are what define great percussionists.
JBodine67 Neil Peart is an extremely powerful drummer. This dude nailed it "technically" but yes it is a little soft. He looks quite young and small whereas Peart (which most people do not know) is 6"5'' and weighs well over 200 lbs.
cfx5000 Hmm he is 6'4 and he didn't nail it he did very well I couldn't do that but he didn't nail it. Nailing it is getting the part at 3:25 to :30 is nailing it and You must admit the recording of the drums and the song is almost at the exact same sound level so it is hard to hear the drums and accuracy of his playing to NEils. But again he did really good job and better then I ever could when I played the drums
How is it that something as insanely cool as being able to play Tom Sawyer NOTE FOR NOTE could cause 35 people to click the thumbs down button? Seriously, what is wrong with people? Brother, that was tight. It takes a serious amount of hard work and determination to get this good. Keep up the good work.
I love all the haters on here being hypercritical of an awesome performance. I would be willing to bet that most of them are the drunks you see stumbling around at the gig kicking shit over, spilling their drinks on the equipment and saying something retarded like; "Imma drummmmer, I used to drum in bands" then they vomit on the floor, and go pass out in the parking lot. Post a video and link it here or STFU.
i think its lag, i noticed that too, but everything keeps moving normally, plus his movement and foot position doesnt change between the last scene, and after the lag.
It completely amazes me people can criticize other people for 1 mistake in a song, when you have done everything else great. Neil Peart is an absolute beast on a drum kit.alot of drummers would take that as a compliment if you got to be 1/100th of a drummer Peart is.There will never be another one!
Do you have any cover of one of the best drummers in the whole world?? so what he missed a stroke on the ride cymbal!! What is the point in pointing it out?? the kid did a great job!!!!
ok this just took me back 34 freaking years! reminds me when i played this in my bedroom at my parents house when they weren't home lol. Same way..headphones on and kicking drums. I had a double bass and one more tom tom but not nearly as many cymbals but it was still a blast. good job covering a difficult song!!
Kid, I am a drummer from years ago. I put my sticks on the shelf in the mid nineties before reaching my full potential. I now have an 11 year old son wanting to play. I hope he is as good as you some day. You FAR surpassed my skills. I let him watch this video and his eyes were WIDE open and grinning from ear to ear. This is going to be a GREAT Christmas for him! (Hint, hint)
I have this video as one of my favorites and I looked at it at least twise a week, my youngest son is learning how to play the drums, and he could play some AC/DC, GnR, and Zep but not at this level, I could only hope that with practice he could get this GOOD. Well done kid, one of the best Tom sawyer covers on youtube. Congrats, and Bravo Zulu.
Nice job! You have skill and played the song as it should have been played. It is nice to see someone do a really good job with such a great song. So many people do poor jobs trying to cover Rush drum tracks so it was great to see your video and watch you play it as it should be played. Thanks I enjoyed watching you play!
I have seen Rush in concert several times and I am from Alabama too. Dude, you are awesome ! One of the best I have seen and I watch a bunch of videos. You are about as good as it gets, keep on rockin' !
Tom Sawyer is one my top 5 ROCK AND ROLL SONGS OF ALL TIME. Dude you did a damn good job playing this. Neil is my favorite drummer and if he see this , he will be proud.GOOD JOB MAN.
WOW! You really nail this piece, particularly the "tone" of the sheds / riffs. Great work. It takes a lot of discipline to so closely match what Neil is doing here. I'm really impressed - keep at it and you'll reach even higher levels.
Nailed it, great job. I saw an interview where Neil said that after all these years he still really enjoyed playing Tom Sawyer because it was such a challenging piece to play. You just nailed this to the floor my friend. Once again - -Great job!
Way to play. Great job. Love the way you handled the work on the toms. Da-yum. I hit play on this expecting some half baked job....blew me away - you rock.
Excellent job. Just playing this song accurately, alone, is quite challenging. But to have it come across as smooth and effortless, says a lot - not just about your drumming abilities, but your level of concentration and your attention to detail. Bravo!
I swear to God, if you stop drumming, the entire RUclips community is going to find you and make you play. I will say though.. this isn't the 'best' (whatever that means) that I've seen.. HOWEVER.. this does have one of the best GROOVES I've seen on this song. Great job!! I'm sure everyone here will agree.
You are excellent, I've been a Neil Peart fan since day 1.. and that is a very difficult piece and you mastered it... I'm a musician and I know when I see and hear talent .. Congrats to you. wishing you the best in success. It's so nice to see young people use their natural talents, being today's music is based on computers and autotune.. (not good).. Keep on truckin' , you got it made!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That's a very technical piece to play, you did a nice job with it. I've played for long time and I know I could not do it justice. I'm not at a level to perform it with the kind of accuracy it demands. Well done.
That's one of the things that makes this the best cover of TSawyer i've seen; you're smooth & not looking like ur trying to beat the crap out of your kit. Then there's the technical aspect: superb, and only about 3 - maybe 4 - moments where it becomes apparent that you're not listening to the drum track of the original studio version. Right on!
Late to the party, but your damn good kid!! Dont let others bring you down, I saw Rush in concert 3 times, and he never played to song the exact same way any time. You play what you feel at the time or what the music dictates. Its hard to explain. Neil Peart id just a man. A good drummer, but just a man. Even HE, sometimes may forget to play this or that the same as on the record.
Mike, that was awesome yet again, you are a high caliber drummer up there with the big boys.Ever thought of being in a big time group?...You deserve it,thanks for that awesome video of you playing yet again..............Richie.
This was FLAWLESS - great groove as well. Neil would be very proud of you. Great job brother! I used to try playing "La Villa Strangiotto" but never nailed it note for note like you did
Excellent playing -- and to a song that can be quite challenging!!! No doubt the 'bar' for playing the drums has been raised for the modern drummer. I come from the 70s/80s playing Funk (for the most part). There were some 'flourishes'. I learned by ear, too! But, today a young drummer is expected to deliver a very complicated set of 'grooves'. You play very very well!! Do Continue! And as said by someone else--keep your head straight! I Wish Much Success in Your Drumming Future!!!
WoW! Of all ones to try to emulate... Neil Pert? By far the best on the planet..and yeah, you NAILED it! looked and sounded perfect! Keep up! Great vid!!!
The fact that he recognizes and is trying to play the best is a huge bonus for me. Neil Peart's drumming is not easy to play and this song in particular is a huge test in stamina. This drummer trying to learn Rush is all that matters. Everything else is just secondary. He did a great job btw :D
5 years later, i still think this is one of the best drum covers ever
Okay here's a story for you:

I can't play like him, I respect the hell out of the guy. Awesome fucking cover!

this is why my band wont play Rush Covers.....every air drummer and air guitar player rips the shit out you for missing a note. Rush fans are weird, its like they think they'r e in the band.
Magic Mike That wasn’t very nice Mikey.. I thought he did a decent job
This is one of the better covers on RUclips
Ah I see you're a man of culture as well
Major respect, this song is legendary.
Crush hard as fuck to play
One of the most accurate I have seen so far! Petty awesome!
DUDE THAT WAS KILLER .TOM SAWYER IS HARD TO PLAY ON DRUMS. THAT WAS SO CLOSE TO PERFECT MAN I LOVE IT
Indeed. It's off a bit in a few areas and slightly less refined (what can one expect), but overall, it's great...more than good enough to be in any band.
yes he did say that
yes he did pretty good. Tom Saywer isnt an easy song to play...Neil has said its the hardest song he's ever done so this guy did all right
Lol even Neil Peart messes this one up occasionally
Neil Peart anything is a challenge, I should think.
i'm 18 and my study of music is me, myself, and I :) my dad's friend asked me had i ever heard tom sawyer by rush? i said no then i learned it 100% by ear and now here it is up on youtube..i'm just kickin ass and takin names haha
I only saw one glaring 'edit' ... Pretty impressive. Neil makes it look so easy. But, when you watch this, it kinda gives you a feel of just how technical the drum part is. Well done
I'm not a musician per se - but have been listening to Rush since I was 10 . You're absolutely right -- this kid hasn't skipped ONE beat ! Amazing
The one thing that really gets me is that no matter how good a drummer is they always seem just a bit off playing rush. Neil Peart has this weird perfect timing that you can hear in every single song. It's like he has a built in metronome in his freaking head. Hell the whole band pretty much has perfect timing.
Correct. Even Portnoy can't get it exactly right.
my son is 12 and has been playing drums for 6 years....this song is on his must learn short list.. he's constantly pulling up videos of people playing this.. one day you'll see him :)
Excellent POV. All drumming videos should have this perspective.
Dude, you're playing is PERFECTION in this song. I am so impressed. I have played and taught music for so many years. My band played this song when I was in HS many years ago and our drummer was wicked awesome but you are way better. Props. Please keep up your playing for ever. You are so, so talented. Great job on probably one of the hardest songs to play on drums. Sounds awesome
Not really, It took me 2 weeks to learn it a while ago.
+How To Get A Massive Chest uh huh, sure....how long did it take you to actually be good. Learning it and being good at playing is not the same :)
I've been playing drums and guitar since I was 7 I'm 22. I don't care what you think.
+Blake k piss off buddy! arrogant ass
Well done! Would you like a fucking cookie maestro?
I've watched probably 2 dozen of these videos, where drummers cover this song. This is probably the best I've seen. Incredible. One gets tired just watching. Great job.
2:50-3:01 was perfect
MangoSmoothie16 holy crapolo. This guy is real good
Exactly what I was going to comment but you obviously beat me to it
double bass?
I agree
yes but no, he didnt play the bell of the ride
Dude, you should have a million views. It's very refreshing to see a kid your age paying tribute to the best. Keep it up pal, you are the next generation!
Great job on the song... Don't listen to the guys ragging on you on what you missed or what you did wrong. Neil Pert has said him self in interviews that this song is hard to play and to this day he still makes mistakes playing this song.
damn good job on a very hard song to drum. well done
I love how you just absolutely slayed Tom Sawyer then nonchalantly walk off. Neil Peart is smiling down on you ❤
insane, i thought you really were Neil until i read the description
no
Excellent job, nice set up ,nicely tuned skins, great cymbals.
great role model . . . . . Peart is such a great musician to try to cover , every song is such a challenge not to mention a work out mentally and physically . . . . thank God for Neil Peart!

Totally Awesome. Fabulous job playing Tom Sawyer. A+ for effort
Great job. F the trolling haters.
Hello! I was sent here by Brian Malec, your friend who is also my dad! You r fantastic! I love drums!
Neil Peart is a tough act to follow but he did pretty good!
How is it that something as insanely cool as being able to play Tom Sawyer NOTE FOR NOTE could cause 35 people to click the thumbs down button? Seriously, what is wrong with people?
Brother, that was tight. It takes a serious amount of hard work and determination to get this good. Keep up the good work.

absolutely right..... "I'm a drummer" "Oh cool, here's my kit, go for it" Guy sits down, proceeds to try a 4/4. Fails. "Oh man, I need my own kit"...
From one drummer to another, beautiful cover! I think Neil would even nod his head to this.
is that a cut at 1:05?
HaffSack Yeah
+HaffSack I think it's a lag in the video itself; the other symbols are still moving when it cuts
Might be a play through
i think its lag, i noticed that too, but everything keeps moving normally, plus his movement and foot position doesnt change between the last scene, and after the lag.
Good eye
Holy crap! I love Rush, and you did honor and justice to this brilliant song. Fantastic!
1:04 what happened ?
Probably messed up. This song is hard to play on drums give the guy some credit this was great
It completely amazes me people can criticize other people for 1 mistake in a song, when you have done everything else great. Neil Peart is an absolute beast on a drum kit.alot of drummers would take that as a compliment if you got to be 1/100th of a drummer Peart is.There will never be another one!
45 people can't play this.
now 63!
Elliott Aerial now 98!
Now 138!
Awesome tune, one of the all time greats! Neil Peart among the top 3 in book. All in all good job Michael, keep rockin bro!
he missed a high hat @ 3:12
It's not a hi hat btw, its a ride cymbal
benyburst -_- doesnt matter, he missed it :D
SilverZeppelin way to knit pik a good solo...asshat
Darren Mahan cant help if it was soo noticeable
Do you have any cover of one of the best drummers in the whole world?? so what he missed a stroke on the ride cymbal!! What is the point in pointing it out?? the kid did a great job!!!!
Dude....Peart is the MASTER and you totally NAILED it!!!! My all time favorite drum line!!! ROCK THE *%^$ ON!!!!!!
Impressive. He nailed at of Neal's fills and never lost time. Well done.
ok this just took me back 34 freaking years! reminds me when i played this in my bedroom at my parents house when they weren't home lol. Same way..headphones on and kicking drums. You FAR surpassed my skills. I let him watch this video and his eyes were WIDE open and grinning from ear to ear. This is going to be a GREAT Christmas for him! (Hint, hint)
If Neil Peart saw this, he'd probably sign all your cymbals and drum heads. You just whizzed rite trough this. Fantastic cover man!!
I have this video as one of my favorites and I looked at it at least twise a week, my youngest son is learning how to play the drums, and he could play some AC/DC, GnR, and Zep but not at this level, I could only hope that with practice he could get this GOOD.

Tom Sawyer is one my top 5 ROCK AND ROLL SONGS OF ALL TIME. Dude you did a damn good job playing this. Neil is my favorite drummer and if he see this , he will be proud.GOOD JOB MAN.
you sir are one of the best drummers i have seen on youtube
Sweet! Very good job, pal. Been a Rush fan for a while now, and nothing is cooler than hearing someone have a go at it! Bravo!
Rush had one of the best drummers in the world and this guy has nailed it so good job man!
Peart is my favorite drummer as well and you would make him proud!! Awesome!!!
Great cover dude! The tune on your kit is awesome! The cymbals are bright and your ride is nice and loud like Neil's always was! Great job!
WOW! You really nail this piece, particularly the "tone" of the sheds / riffs. Great work. It takes a lot of discipline to so closely match what Neil is doing here. I'm really impressed - keep at it and you'll reach even higher levels.
Wow! medicine to my ears! Incredible!!!
You got Neil Peart's spirit mended with yours! Fantastic and flawless bro, keep it up!
Incredible!! fantastic... You! You are the best that I have ever heard on the drums!!!! You go!
Good job kid, keep up the good work and may RUSH forever live on!!!
Well done , i have been over that track a thousand times ,great job , great track
Sorry about my english... I´m from Brazil and l like Rush so much... You have played it perfeclty. Congratulatons... you borned with a great gift
The best drummer that I've ever seen on Tom Sawyer. WOW
You really are a fantastic drummer, and your taste in music is just as fine. I salute you.
Nailed it, great job. I saw an interview where Neil said that after all these years he still really enjoyed playing Tom Sawyer because it was such a challenging piece to play.
You just nailed this to the floor my friend. Once again - -Great job!
THE CLEANEST COVER TO DATE. great JOB!
Just awesome in my opinion. Nice cympals. They sound very nice.
Awesome job!! Keep up the great work - that is one the harder Rush songs to play and you rocked it!
The best Tom Saywer drum cover I've seen so far.
This is phenomenal, but check out Avery Molek and be blown away.
Bravo!
As a life-long air drummer, let me just say kudos to you sir! Job well done!
Your play is very easy to understand!! Thank you for nice movie!!
Excelent... Hugies from Brazil.
That's a very technical piece to play, you did a nice job with it. I've played for long time and I know I could not do it justice. I'm not at a level to perform it with the kind of accuracy it demands. Well done.
oh my god this is perfect; i love the cymbals everywhere. i would love to play on this
That's one of the things that makes this the best cover of TSawyer i've seen; you're smooth & not looking like ur trying to beat the crap out of your kit. Then there's the technical aspect: superb, and only about 3 - maybe 4 - moments where it becomes apparent that you're not listening to the drum track of the original studio version. Right on!
Neil Peart would be proud of you. Excellent technique. Congratulations
Very solid, my friend. I play guitar, have for years, but I still enjoy the drums the best.
Probably the best, yet most unexpected Tom Sawyer cover I've seen.
This was amazing kid!!!! Neil is family to me and I know he will love this!!!!!!!!!!!!toms toms
Not only did you nail it but you have an awesome looking drum kit!
The Best Tom Sawyer's Cover Ever!!! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Even HE, sometimes may forget to play this or that the same as on the record.
friggin' awesome!!..neil would be proud.i think i might have noticed one little mistake..keep up the awesome work.
Mike, that was awesome yet again, you are a high caliber drummer up there with the big boys.Ever thought of being in a big time group?...You deserve it,thanks for that awesome video of you playing yet again..............Richie.
Well Done!! You are tight and doing the score justice. Nice. Thanks for sharing this!
This kid rocks! Amazing drumming. Enjoyed watching the video.
Beautiful cymbals and great playing. Awesome!
Im a big fan of young talented people and you Sir are AWESOME!
The master would be really proud of you that was fantastic!! Even he says Tom Sawyer is difficult.
Excellent, very clean, I hope to see more videos of you playing.
The finish on those cymbals are freaking gorgeous.
This was FLAWLESS - great groove as well. Neil would be very proud of you. Great job brother! I used to try playing "La Villa Strangiotto" but never nailed it note for note like you did
Best cover I have ever seen just perfect, Great drummer!!!!
love it. he looks young. good to see a young lad playing classics
...tanks Mike!...Intense...che brividi!...Grande musica! Grande perfomance!...
Awesome job young man...not anyone can play like that. Expect to hear about you in the near future...keep up yhe great work!!
WOW - can't wait to hear you on a future band reminiscent of Rush/Yes, etc. Great job!!!!!!
