    Thrill Drive always had this sort of charm of making it seem like the accidents that happened are all your fault. It's a shame no one's made midi tracks for Thrill Drive's OST yet.

    The 3+ crash theme seems to be almost as creepy as the 1st TD, sounds shorter overall but almost rushes you as much as the original does.
    Most of the soundtrack lacks a creepy aura, fits seeing this games just brighter.

    • @TASTomusan
      @TASTomusan  3 года назад +2

      That's right. But sadly, as the first game does, they don't port to consoles (e.g. Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 2, OG XBOX, Sega DreamCast, GameCube, etc.) since they were maybe don't care enough or due to lack of time - unlike Police 911 (Police 24/7 in European release)/ The Keisatsukan ported to the PS2.
      Also, this is something that they didn't release on their official CD Audio (like Konami Game Music Now 1999 or Best Selection Autumn 1998) for unknown reasons behind.

    • @TASTomusan
      @TASTomusan  3 года назад +4

      Yeah, especially when "Scream In Attract Mode" is turned ON!
      And guess what, we're still waiting for the "finally complete" emulation progress by next year, or for some months later (hopefully). Right now, it's in "Preliminary" progress, as it's accessible to the "Make Your Own Selection" part, but terribly hangs after the process (even in the Attract Mode - no graphics and sounds yet, only to give I think as - 1 minute or 30 seconds before it hangs, if I'm not mistaken).
      Thanks for the comment of nostalgia!

    • @TASTomusan
      @TASTomusan  Год назад +1

      Yes, my friend. I also remember that game as well when I played Battle Gear 3 (PS2-based arcade game by Taito, in which it's Namco System 246, for "technicality") - that's was likely in the late 2000s until mid or late 2010s (before being moved to Abu Dhabi last June 2, 2018, and I'm currently lived there) if my memory serves right.
      I tried playing it, being me as "the Lexus Yellow Taxi (Sedan)" + USA course (normal). Also, I found out the cheat in the vehicle selection - using the brake pedal (an F1 car or the APC fighting vehicle), but I don't want to spoil myself. Yeah, it's creepy because of the "female scream stock by Konami" and such.
      Yet, that's the real fun and happy memories I have still and won't forget in my lifetime. I would play again (especially in MAME, once the devs have fixed the issues on Konami Viper and such) for some time, and maybe have my own gameplay too, like who knows?!

    FINALLY I MANAGED TO EXTRACT THE AUDIO OF THE KONAMI VIPER'S MUSIC IN STEREO AAAAAAAAA
    but seriously, I was able to extract the audio from the adpcm music in stereo, thanks to ffmpeg, since audacity can't change to stereo when it imports unformatted (raw) audio when selecting vox adpcm, but when I saw that, ffmpeg has adpcm support (just decoding) was testing to see if it's true, and it really is, and it supported stereo (something that audacity didn't support), when I went to check on audacity to see if it worked or not, I saw that it worked and I didn't hear the wheezing, which occurs in audacity (when it imports unformatted audio in vox adpcm), I'll make the command available (yes it has to be windows cmd, or linux command line if you're using it)
    ffmpeg -f u16le -acodec adpcm_ima_oki -ar (choose refresh rate audio speed) -ac (1 = mono, 2 = stereo ) -i (konami viper games cf file for extract music) (name file for ouput music file)
    I really hope I helped with this discovery, it took me a while to realize and test it, but finally I managed to do it.

      @@TASTomusan try to analyze ffmpeg(the latest version, mine was 5.0), because I saw that there is a way to decode the playstation adpcm, other adpcm , I'm seeing if I can find a way to get the sound effects without conflicting the audio, because I have to see the exact command so I don't get audio broken out.

      update:to get the sound effects? I recommend signed 8bit/16bit pcm(s8, or s16le), since the unsinged does not work because the audio bursts and is actually hissed.

    0:00: Whew, does that sound take me back.
    0:07 "[X] PLAYER LINK-PLAY AVAILABLE! / Up to [X] people can race" (X being between 2 to 4)
    Little did we know, it was not _that_ type of multiplayer experience...
    Going to put up a translation of the original Japanese intro because why not.
    0:09: "REPARATIONS"
    0:12: 19,544,712 + 1,073,701 + 26,001,950 + 3,520,573 = ¥50,140,936
    0:15: "Safety disregarded"
    0:17: "Traffic lights ignored"
    0:18: "Crossed without stopping"
    0:21 ~ 0:23: The four Kanji for "SERIOUS ACCIDENT" pop in and out one after the other here.
    [AaaaaaaaaAAaAaaAAAaaAaaAAAaaaaaAAAAaAAAAAaaaaAAAA!]
    0:25 ~ 0:28: The Kanji for all the possible supporting causes of accidents are pooled together here, along with some other new words ("Amount in damages", "Billions in millions", "Disaster").
    I think "FATAL COLLISION" was intended to be the translation for "Disaster? (Similar to "FATAL ACCIDENT" in the first game)
    Back to your regular coverage...
    0:35: "Please make your selections." | "WAITING FOR PLAYERS" shows up on the other cabinet(s)
    "Please wait a moment." | Multiplayer entry ends / other players decide on the course to play
    "These were your selection." | The player's/players' choices are shown on the screen
    "After the race, we'll analyze your driving technique."
    2:40: "Please start the engine."
    2:50: And AWAAAAAAAAAY WE GO! Floor it to see if you can be faster than the rest, let alone the you of real life!
    Cutting through busy roads and making daring turns at intersections is something most can only dream of _really_ doing.
    "[X]P is catching up."
    Also, "CHECKPOINT! TIME EXTENDED!!" just sounds so plucky and energetic you cannot help but be endeared to it.
    And you **will** need that endearment later...
    8:19: "[X]P has entered the highway."
    "Please watch out for other cars when merging."
    Now, let's play "OutRun" for real! Drive stupid fast through immense, constantly changing traffic
    by using the gaps to stay on the move! The narrower, the better!
    13:15: "[X]P exited the highway."
    It's on to the mountain pass, where all the turns are tight, with the traffic hardly there, although it matters all the same.
    Hope you can drift and swerve neatly. Contact is only natural.
    (There is no mountain pass on the USA course; you start in a small town and end up going through a big city.)
    18:06: "[X]P crossed the last checkpoint."
    Your destination is just within reach, so try to make your last leg of the journey as radically uneventful as you can.
    Goes for crossing the finish line too.
    20:03: It's all fun and games until someone wrecks their car... then the true colours of the game show.
    You are being watched, for this is a no-holds-barred contest to see how well you can recover after a freak incident on the road.
    Even if you have not had an episode yet...
    "Your manners have decreased." / "Your morals have fallen." | "[X]P has crashed." / "[X]P had an accident."
    23:53: "[X]P had a serious accident."
    Many things can go wrong while you are on the road, but when too many fall upon YOU...
    This has gone from a lively weekend drive to a ride for your life. Getting to the goal is all that you wish for now.
    Not many people let things get this bad. Fewer still ever escape from the hole it creates.
    Whatever the case, you're not going to let the horror of street racing take you without a fight.
    30:44: "Congratulations. You reached the finish line."
    Or DID you? At any rate, it's time to see how well you held up...
    30:50: Grade A - "Keep this up, and drive safely!"
    Grade B - "Try not to put anyone in the passenger's seat."
    Grade C - "Don't forget to get insurance."
    Grade D - "Cease driving on public roads."
    Grade E - "You are disqualified from driving."
    **CONGRATULATIONS YOU ARE THRILLDRIVER!**
    Welcome to the winners' circle. That time may not stand for long, but you were able to make it in spite of all your mishaps,
    and that's no small feat to pull off, is it? Just do not apply your movements here to those of reality (unless you _honestly_ need to).
    **YOU ARE BAD DRIVER!**
    There is no getting around it - you are just too much for the passive, relaxed flow of regular traffic.
    You should definitely stop driving around, or aiming to get a car if you are **remotely** like what we've seen here.
    33:15: I think this was meant to be the original Hi-Score Ranking music, at least until the Worst Ranking became a thing...
    As an aside, the Location Test of this game did not come out in late 2001 like you claim, but rather _early_ 2001, in February. So, yes, Thrill Drive 2 is officially 20 years old.
    I feel like I've lost something I can never get back, realizing that the game's heyday (outside of Japan) was about the time that interest in video arcades was dying out,
    with the turn of the millennium being almost like a last ditch effort to fuel its fire. I'm getting so old...
    Out of all the games in the series, TD2 is the only one I have yet to see in action first-hand. I saw several people playing TD1 at the local shopping mall when I was in Lower Primary, and I found several cabinets of TD3 here and there as I got older, that same mall included. Obviously, two different arcades in that mall; the arcade with TD1 closed down around '06, and the one with TD3 stopped operating _much_ later last decade, although the cabinet was gone some time before then.

    • @Sp0UtDuDe03
      @Sp0UtDuDe03 3 года назад +2

      ...The closest.I ever came to finding a TD2 cabinet in person was when I found one in storage at an arcade in a shopping mall within my house in Malaysia, in '13.
      It's been about a month since the last cabinets of TD1 went away, and I just want to make it clear that, even if the game itself may not be all that great, I still do have a strange amity for it if only because of how it calls attention to the severity and terror of road accidents. Obviously, the game cannot just be ported over as it is, since it would need something to keep players coming back for more **outside of** its regular courses.

I couldn't place my finger on it for a while, but today I listened to some of the songs from the Best Selection '98 album and lo and behold, I finally found the original song: ruclips.net/video/OWYquks1lYA/видео.htmlm46s. Which is interesting because VGMDB lists Atsuki Watanabe as the composer of the song from the above link. So I guess Harumi Ueko liked it and used it for Thrill Drive 2.

      Thanks for letting me know about the "Highway Trip" track (history) info!

      Well, good guess, but almost there, buddy!
      In fact (and shockingly surprising), the whole soundtrack was made by one of the most infamous (maybe underappreciated) in-house game composer from Konami: Harumi Ueko [上高治己] (aka Jimmy Weckl)! The proof can be found here: (according to Japanese Wikipedia)
      ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E4%B8%8A%E9%AB%98%E6%B2%BB%E5%B7%B1
      I can't even believe myself from that strange fact though, although yeah, he quit Konami around 2012 (and went silently making music from other video game companies only in Japan, for sure).

    • @TASTomusan
      @TASTomusan  3 года назад +1

      Yes. The OG version (Thrill Drive 1998) went so much popular in Japan (and maybe in USA and Europe), but it was only released in the arcades, as that would be a bit disappointing for console gamers out there.
      And then there's this sequel, retaining the old elements from the 1st game, but I actually prefer the 1st game in my humble opinion (IMHO) since how it was started in the beginning.

      @@TASTomusan My first experience of playing the Thrill Drive series was the 3rd one in arcades a couple years ago. It was surprisingly fun but it reminded me of the flaws for Burnout 1 before they switched on focusing on the Crash system.

    • @TASTomusan
      @TASTomusan  3 года назад +1

      Mine, in my home country (Philippines), I saw some Thrill Drive 2 cabinets, and then one time - I tried to play it, and it's really cool as well, even for today's standards (but you know what - I didn't get through the finish line, 'cause I was just dumb and suck honestly trying not to crash my vehicle, but ultimately failed; tried on the USA course). Lately I played the 3rd (and final, except Crazy Streets: Thrill Drive [4], which never came out outside USA at that time and through the present) version, although physics and camera angles were significantly changed from the previous 2 games.
      Shame that there are recent closing arcade amusements today, not gonna lie, as they're extremely rare to find and play again soon (esp. the OG 1998, whereas I think only in Japan are probably currently available, if I'm not mistaken).
      Yes, I'd say that Burnout series did a very well done on its gameplay mechanics, graphics and its physics as well as the replay value. However though, I never played it, but I'll play it soon.

      Yes, Crazy Streets actually exists since 2007 (3 years after Thrill Drive 3 - produced in 2004). But unfortunately, in Japan, Konami decided to cancel the game (unknown reasons behind) except in the United States. I wonder if it's dumped and playable on PC (for teknoparrot) someday though, since it's not yet available in the Internet nowadays, so let's be patient while we still can.

      In fact, that said game resembles like Road Fighter 3D (due to its style and the HUD) and Burnout series as well. You may agree or disagree with such respect of my basis.

      It's your "high-tech cube car" that became an unfortunate bug (and game-breaking, especially when the current network status from the beginning which is completely fine - has become even atrociously unstable for a very long time) to prevent the player(s) reaching the FINISH.
      Interestingly enough, I think they're used for testing purposes, as for the 3D collision detection during the development at that time (yeah, more than 20 years ago - we're so old to be honest), since all playable vehicles from the first Thrill Drive (1998) were returned in the 2nd series - and the addition of new vehicles.
