Holy hell Myst I just wanna say how left field it was when you mentioned the Kalevala. Reason being is because I did a slideshow on Finland when I was in ninth grade and part of the project was to talk about a piece of folklore from Finland and I just so happened to find the Kalevala.

I don't speak Finnish, nor do I know 2 languages, but using the bit of Japanese experience I have, I would go with *both* tbh. Maybe English as a primary resource, but use Finnish translations to try and get more context on how a given word is actually used. All 3 languages have such nuance, it can be tough translating 1-1, so getting as much context as possible to truly learn is nice
I actually used resources from both Finnish and English to Japanese. I started with a couple of textbooks from the "Japanin kielet alkeet" Finnish series.
