Track & Field II (NES) Playthrough - NintendoComplete

- A playthough of Konami's 1989 sports game for the NES, Track & Field II.
Played through the Olympic mode as the USA team.
Contrary to what its title implies, Track & Field II is not the second title in the series, but the fourth. Track & Field (1983), Hyper Sports (which the NES version of T&F was based on, 1985), and '88 Games (1988) all preceded it. It is, however, the second NES game, and this one is a system exclusive.
Track & Field II was originally released in 1988 for the Famicom under the name "Konamic Sports in Seoul," referring to the Olympic games held that year in the South Korean capital. I'm playing the American version here, which was released the following year.
You can find the NES Track & Field here:

After the arcade smash Track & Field became a major best-seller when it was brought to the NES in 1988, it would've only made sense to follow it up with something even bigger and better. Konami was firing on all cylinders on the NES in 1989, and their games were quickly starting to stretch the 8-bit hardware to its limits.
While Castlevania III, Contra, and TMNT 2 tend to grab the most attention when people talk about Konami's impressive NES games, they often tend to overlook this gem. It wouldn't too difficult to mistake it for a 16-bit title at first glance, much like The Immortal or Batman: Return of the Joker, with its huge character sprites, heavy use of digitized voices, and flashy TV-style presentation.
It includes many of the events from the first Track & Field, and then throws in a boatload more - now we get swimming, taekwondo, fencing, and diving, in addition to a bunch of bonus games (like a Zapper-compatible shooting gallery a la Hogan's Alley as an exhibition event, and the 2-player arm wrestling match ups), and the returning events have all been nicely spruced up.
This one is so much harder than the original though. As amazing as their NES games were, Konami had a period where they made all of their games mercilessly difficult, and Track & Field II sits smack in the middle of that trend. Just like Bayou Billy, TMNT, Rollergames, Mission: Impossible, and Top Gun 2, Track & Field II is capable of provoking gamepad-smashing fits of rage, not to mention the bloody thumbs.
The variety in game types is certainly welcome, but a few too many of them land squarely in the mold of mashing A as fast as humanly possible to fill a gauge. The variety also takes away some of the simplicity that really sold the original game - the controls take some effort to learn in this one, especially considering since the Olympic mode leaves little room for hesitation or error.
Still, it's a fantastic multiplayer game that is nearly as exciting to watch as it is to play thanks to Konami's unwillingness to yield to hardware limitations. If you need something to tide you over until the 202X Olympics (if/when they happen), this is a great way to spend a few hours not remembering that you're stuck in your house.

My god, I haven't seen this game in decades, but my mind began to follow the music automatically as soon as the game began. It was a really impressive game for the NES. Such a variety of graphics and game dynamics
Indeed. The game's rendition of the word "Foul" amused me so much that's what goes through my head when I see a foul ball in baseball.
@@SamtheBravesFan it's really incredible, all the precision
Fowel.
Yeah, this was such a great game for the time. If you like this type of game in a 2D retro style, you'll probably like the new game ' Medal winners 24' on Steam. Also Capcom's gold medal challenge '92 was good.
It's one of the few games to present higher uses of color in sprites rather than BG tiles
For the time, this is a really gorgeous-looking and sounding NES game!
Absolutely, there was much love put into programming this game for sure
I love how the audience sounds just like a broken speaker.
Konami games always sound great.
30 years later I still hum the theme song in my head
Konami and tecmo had good news music
Konami's followup to the smash hit Track & Field recaptures the same bleeding thumb magic, only now with more events and with graphics now verging on 16-bit quality. We might not get the Olympics this year, but we'll always have Track & Field!
the graphics alone are what sold this game back in the day
My thumb still remembers the soreness after the Hammer Throw x.x
lol this description I thought it was a recent remaster, thanks for the time machine :) I like clay pigeon shooting in this and retro 1964 for mario and sonic tokyo 2020. 2:55 loved that triple jump music, makes me want to do some runs, well at home anyway.
I got sick of all that damn thumb smashing. I went and got the NES Advantage controller. Turbo all the way, baby! 😄
Is there any link or app to play these games in mobile
This game was ahead of its time and caused me to develop many blisters!!
Boulevard of broken controllers

this was one of the NES games I had as a kid. Super nostalgic to me.
Agreee
This game was impossible without a turbo controller
Totally agree. Had to have the Nes Advantage 👍
A battery AA
Factually wrong.
@@DisgruntledDoomer how so?
Because it *is* possible to beat the game without any cheats (=turbo controllers). You might need a fresh one, tho. @@JM-eg6yx
Amazing graphics!
Konami was an amazing game developer in the 80s and 90s.
Nostalgia. I played this game for hours with my brother. We still realize today that Konami was making the most of the capacity of the wonderful NES
The graphics are great
This game was so hard without a tutorial, I didn't know what to do for diving and many other disciplines, all I heard was "disqualified" all the time lol. Arm wrestling was the only thing I could enjoy without sucking.
Track Field ll yes Aristowi
Same here. Basically i was just admiring the visuals and sound, some of the best on the nes
NOSTALGIAAAAAAAAA!!!!!! Wish i could go back to these Days.
With what we know now.
This is one of my favorite NES games. It brings back childhood memories!
Every time the Olympics come around this brings back memories of my childhood. This game made me want to watch the Olympics as a kid.
I owned and play the heck out of this as a kid. Some events I just could never seem to get down, but sure didn't stop me from playing! A Konami classic.
Crowd noise is the same as Blades of Steel hockey game.
The sparrow call made sense in this game, less so in Blades of Steel
I love the recycled Top Gun sound effects when the plane landed.
I loved this game!!!!
May I ask you, what mean is exhibition?
This game and the Super Spike V ball were so much fun. I didn't own them, but they always got heavy play on visits to cousin's house.
back in the day I was like Wow on how good the graphics looked with the Big human sprites!!!
Konami/Ultra Music has the best music on NES. I enjoy the music as well as the games.
I'm pretty sure it's the same art and audio team as Ninja Turtles. It looks like it was made by them.
This is one of the best games ever created I used to play this about 30 years ago with my cousin and brother...it was golden era of Konami and I hope they modernize and make this game again which will be a high demanding game... time flies 😢
If you like this game so much, you should try Medal winners 24.
Loved the hang gliding. And the music was awesome. And it was fun to intentionally tank the high dives.
many, many sleepless 80s nights trying to beat this 🎮 game...
Yeah, this was such a great game back then. Now you could try Medal winners 24.
One of the most fun and frustrating games on the NES! 😄
The pinnacle of 8-bit gaming. I loved this game. This brings back so many good memories.
Found a copy of this game in the box complete for 5 or 10 bucks at the game store I used to frequent years ago. Always was hilarious the expression of the characters in the arm wrestling segment.
The game that made the NES Advantage a legend
Thanks for uploading this sir,I never played the II version of this game, always played the first one,the original Track & Field.
One of my all-time favourite NES games in my happy childhood years, but that "Hammer throw" event is terribly hard to qualify even using turbo controller!! Damn it!!!
I enjoy this era of Konami music as it is the same era as contra, gradius 2, top gun 2.
Of the hundreds of times I have played this game as a kid, I never knew about the “Gun Firing” level until now.
That level definitely seemed like the precursor to “Lethal Enforcers”. 😊
Watching this brought back great memories of playing this game for hours on end (though I could never seem to get the hang of high diving)
I love how the audience sounds just like a broken speaker.
The faces on some of the athletes are intimidating and scary. They look like comic book villains.
😂
One of my fav NES games i played as a kid at that time
I played this for years as a kid and it was fun playing against my cousins. Figuring out the scoring system was fun too.
this is probably... one of the best.... must have for NES back then
You must be insane. You really think this game stacks up to the likes of Mario 3, Castlevania and Zelda? (just to name a few of the genuinely best games of the NES) This game sucked ass. Graphics and sound were good but the gameplay was absolutely atrocious. Half of the sports I couldnt even figure out how to play them and the other half required insane mashing of the buttons that was literally impossible to pull off. THIS GAME SUCKS.
The sound track didn't need to go that hard but it did
I had not seen this game since 2001 !!!! My cousin, who is older than me, lent me his NES games during the summer.
Oh, cool. Olympic sports.
14:13 - Wait a minute...
I so wish that Lethal Enforcers was an actual event in the Olympics.
My thumbs blistered watching this video. I got the NES advantage stick just to play this lol
Me and my brother played this for hours. We smashed the A + B Buttons.
That "On Your Mark...Get Set..." is so sick
Love youtube, never would i thought i would see this old ass game from my childhood.
They really upped the ante with the presentation here!
Fiit Fiouuuuu, Fit Fit Fiouuuuuu. Classic Konami whistling
Great times when Konami was good and wanted to make games
One of the best looking games on the NES.
YOU UPLOADED IT ON MY BIRTHDAY :-)
Best olympic game ever.
I came here after watching Tokyo Olympics. So related. They did a great job with this game.
I loved this game.
This music pumps me up when I’m at the airport!
What a game! Good times!
I loved this game as a kid. For Taekwondo I used to do the 180 kick and if you get your timing right, it takes away about half of the opponent's energy. Two of those kicks and the opponent is done. Getting the timing though felt as good as as fatality in MK though
Fam would cheat
Good ole days
Taught us how to share or something
3:10 dude is straight up triple jumping 100 meters but the result shows 16.50 haha
I loved that game! I didn't remember there were all these events. Years has passed since then ^^
Apenas me vengo a enterar de que existió este espectacular juego, yo siempre jugué el Track & Field 1, el Track & Field 2 parece incluso de SNES
I always have Top Gun nightmares when I hear the intro with the jet landing at the airport.
"Our condolences are sponsored by LJN - Because it's never too late to butcher a franchise." - PlayItBogart's review of Track and Field II
I'm amazed that how they improved the graphics on nes in the later years.
Loved this .....
Definitely a great game right here, the only frustrating games to me were the triple jumping and the pole vault. smh lol
My parents bought this for me of a street dealer and I use to play countless hours of it. The karate was my favorite due to bloodsport having a similar game. And the fencing Was amazing
awesome game!
Wow this game was a whole bunch of fun 😃
Looks like a 16 bit game, what a fantastic work from KONAMI.
Ahhhh, all classic American sports such as pole vaulting, hang gliding and gun shooting in one game!
Watching this during Tokyo Olympics 2020.
The sounds lol so awesome
That white noise used for the crowd. So realistic, right?
Konami aprovecho lo maximo de los 16 bits por eso era la marca mas vendida y los juegos eran caros good saturdays
@@NintendoComplete It's memorable, though!
I remember tapping the hell out of those buttons in the 100 yard dash😄
Lowkey one of the best games on the NES, way better than the 1st
I remember that I had a Karate Championship game for my old Apple IIc that was almost exactly like the Taekwondo event, in this game. Except one hit brought down either you or your opponent, and you progressed by winning enough matches to go up a belt. You couldn't "beat" the game. Once you reached Black Belt, your matches with CPU opponents became progressively more difficult until you were finally defeated.
I remember crushing this game with my nes advantage controller, lol!!! >_
Was one of the first games I had on nes
The Game When I Still A Elementary Student ,Love It🙏
Konami originally promoted for an October 1988 release date for Track & Field II, which definitely didn't happen until early 1989.
5:14 performance enhancing drugs. Impossible comeback.
10:50 shooting stage, the shooter is right handed when he shoots clay to the right and becomes left handed (11:09) when shooting clays to the left.
14:12 Wow, killing people was sanctioned as a track and field event.
17:00 same sounds from Bayou Billy!
I used to have the footpad for this game. Was great.
So nostalgy when they be phothografied with the medals
👍
I remember renting this from Erol's back in '89 and just being stunned at both the sheer number of events offered and the high level of graphics and sound. I remember reading about it in "Nintendo Power" and wanting to purchase it at "Toys r' Us" but it was hard to get a hold of.
Who's erol?
A video rental store that existed in the 1980s and 1990s. They were lots of them in Virginia and Maryland. @@Tony_Cardoza
Good luck, Alex NintendoComplete
This was based on the "24th Olympiad 1988 in Seoul"
Nice. It seems to have used a lot of game concepts from Epyx Summer games i and IO
believe it or not track & field II was not only my first track & field game that i have ever played and owned on the nes back in 1989 when i was i think 3 years old maybe 4 now im 34 years old but it was also my first konami game that i have ever played and owned and what a game to start with and the rest is history which in other words it hold the most nestalgic value to me which we all know by now that konami back in the day was king so the more we forgot and not talk about konami today for my given sake and for others the better but my point being is that this is probubly the most nestagic konami game that i know and played and its a shame it got overlooked because there's alot to like about this game that has that good ole old-school nes konami magic and out of all the track & field games that im aware of track & field will always be my favorite track & field game in the series to me and will always be one of my favorite konami games on the nes to me even though im not the biggiest sports fan nor the biggiest olympics fan but this game is the exception along with blades of steel, double dribble, tecmo bowl, tecmo super bowl, tecmo bad news baseball, nintendo world cup a.k.a nekketsu high school dodgeball club:soccer, ice hockey and base wars of course
9:30 All these years i've never once noticed Ash Ketchum's dad out here clay pigeon shooting under the name Marge Simpson.
The music on hang glider, holy shit!
I had the turbo controller for this game. Made it really fun
Mom knew how to do the hammer throw and it took me years to figure that out. She and I also figured out the method to make the archery arrow always go down the middle.
That bird sound at the end of every cheer, lol
I remember using a hi-liter marker or pen to smash the buttons before getting a turbo controller.
For archery, divide the wind speed by 2 and point your arrow in the opposite direction. Bullseye!
Otia, no recordaba las voces, que fuerte
The game seem to really have an extension beyond thought
Konami on point with this classic, as well as with Blades of Steel
I see you got the normal ending! I didn't know this game had different endings depending on how many gold medals you got. The best ending has the two athletes smiling broadly and showing off a total of 8 medals, 2 in each hand. The bad ending has them both showing their empty hands with a look of disappointment in their faces! xD
The memories!!!!
aaaahh my favourite olympics event. The Mafia Showdown.
0:50 Welcome to Konami Airlines. Just make sure Konami has your permission to star in a Nintendo game first before you fly with us. Thank you for flying with Konami Airlines and have a nice day.
I used a spoon for this game!
80s baby💯
My favorite on that game was the tae-kwon-do competition.
My God I never knew about it!
