There were only 3 laps remaining when Langston got the flat tire. My theory is that it was so late in the race, and I don't think it may have been legal to make the pit stop, but only Grant Langston and/or KTM could tell you the real reasoning why.
@@MathewVsSportsMediaandGames I know revisiting this race I thought there were more laps left. (Would have been near impossible to make it back up to 4th but should have tried never know what could have happen)
@@CaddyJim Well, David Bailey said it best when it comes to flats or broken wheels -- "As soon as you start to feel it, you only get a couple of laps." I think Langston's rear wheel was so busted up, there was just no way he could have continued on (he said himself there were about 15 broken spokes and the wheel was collapsed). Total shame, too, but at the same time, I was pulling for Mike Brown to win this title, and I got my wish.
@@MathewVsSportsMediaandGames like I said I was watching another video in the topic was casing larocco's leap in the back wheel not exploding which reminded me of this race I can watch and I thought there was more laps left.. so with so few laps up I can understand but still would have attempted
@@CaddyJim Well, you can't say Langston didn't try to nurse that KTM to the finish. You must be thinking of Pastrana casing LaRocco's Leap in practice on that Suzuki 125 which did not earn any brownie points with Roger DeCoster one bit. Langston even said in an interview that the KTMs were crap that year.
Jonny B from labtek and fast times at district 5 is in the same shirt snapping pictures of the bike.. we were obviously right there when it happened... I remember the whole place going wild when Brown passed him.
unoefxz Again lucky you -- I remember I was rooting for Mike Brown when the series became one to watch with all of Travis' crashes and eventually pulling out of the series.
unoefxz First moto for RC, yeah -- OOC, but I think most people will remember when Mike Brown pulled over for 3rd to give Ricky the overall and the record when everyone expected a reversal of that (Carmichael pulling over for Brown).
Nobody could've predicted that rear wheel on Langston would've fell off. He was VERY close to the title, but at the same time, I was pulling for Mike Brown the whole while.
@@MathewVsSportsMediaandGames I was there. I went to 6 of the nationals that year. Many were clearing it clean or at least cleaner. Langston was slamming it over and over. That craptastic KTM rear suspension didnt help the situation. Those bikes were god awful back then. It was amazing that Langston did as well as he did on it.
@@pressrolls Lucky you. I didn't really hear much about any shoddy craftsmanship on the KTMs in 2001, but I still believe it was rotten luck and nothing to do with the bike.

Mm-hmm on all accounts; shame Ricky's record only lasted until 2004.
I never understood why they didn't attempt to change the back tire (but I did think there were more laps left)

Nice! thank you!!!
matteo512 You're very welcome. Hopefully you will see the full broadcast that is on my channel
Glory days
No arguments there.
@20:46 who is that stunningly handsome guy that enters from the right? Oh snap! thats me! sporting the Racer X shirt!
+unoefxz lol -- never knew that ;)

It was a strange outcome and I kind of remember Carmichael having to slow down, then he didn't and he was on rails yet out of control all day..
