Tchaikovsky even succeeds at doing the miscommunication trope successfully? That’s amazing. This really sounds good! I loved what you had to say about depression, the anthropology question, and I loved your use of Link in this video! 😄
The miscommunication trope being effective seems to be something that Tchaikovsky excels at! There's some really cool stuff about language in Children of Time as well. Great review, Allen!
After watching the first 3 minutes of this video, I went and read the novella. I had to come back to say thank you for this recommendation Allen! I loved this book, the concept of the story and how Tchaikovsky wrote the characters were fantastic. The miscommunication trope was well done. I have so many things I want to talk about from this book, so I’m trying to get my fiancé to read it. This book also reminded me of a premise you might see in an episode of Star Trek. Now, I must finish watching this video.
@@TheLibraryofAllenxandria I'm back again! haha I found out he also wrote a pair of novellas called The Expert System's Brother and the Expert System's Champion. These are also sci-fi and were great reads! If they aren't on your list already, you should give them a try! I think you'd like them if you liked Elder Race.
Just finished the novella - great review!! I also loved how Nyr who feels rather superior confronted with the fantasy-people (as I suspect WE do from our perspective as readers), because he knows the laws and mechanics of the universe etc, meets the “demon” in the end. Can’t write the details here, but you know what I mean (also a very Lovecraftian idea, now that I think of it). I’m currently reading all the Tchaikovsky-novellas and so far one really stands out for me: One Day All This Will Be Yours. I love time-travel-stories! And this one takes the whole problem of time-travel by the roots, swings it around and throws it against the wall so hard it shatters to a million pieces. The premise of the whole thing… Aaaaaah! Now I’m afraid of ever picking up a time-travel-book again. Well… It’s also hilariously funny! So very well done. You might not like the SF-stuff that much, but you’re going to love the dinosaur :) My favourite Tchaikovsky-novel is Cage of Souls - it combines the coolest Fantasy and SF-elements and turns it into a hell of an adventure at the end of time (or rather, shortly before the end of humankind). So far I haven’t met anyone who likes this book as much as I do, sooo, maybe he wrote it just for me, who knows, haha. All the best, please keep doing this! Caro
Yes, this one sounds like a good place to start. It is entirely standalone and he is pretty good at closing the narrative threads within one novella, even if he might decide to write a sequel down the road.
(Sorry if this a repost - I'm not sure if my previous comment wasn't posted, or was moderated) Check out the Steerswoman books if you haven't. They explore similar ideas, and are excellent.
'Elder Race' by Hate Forest is such an amazing track and one of my all time favourites. You really can feel the hatred. The entire Purity album consists of nothing but intense rapid-fire blast beats, low-fi but merciless vocals (that one can only imagine consists of polemic against the degeneracy of the modern society, as is expected of the nsbm genre) yet also somehow manages to incorporate a hypnotic atmosphere throughout the repetitive patterns. One can only hope that Roman and the rest survive the unjustified russian invasion, seeing as how they are based in Kharkiv. Their demise would be a downfall for the entire scene.

Hahahahhahah I can always count on you for noticing my clips!
And yes, this is the only form of the miscommunication trope that is acceptable.

I'm pumped to read more of his sci-fi!
Just finished! Great review Allen. Love your stuff.
Thank you for suggesting this one. I read it based on your suggestion, and it was very good.
This review made me go request this book from the library. Before your review was over. Thanks!
I hope you really enjoy it!
I'm a big fan of excellent, short reads! Thanks for the recommendation!
Yesss, I have the physical copy now for you to borrow!

Yes! I'm so glad you loved it! Someone else had mentioned the Star Trek thing as well and I completely agree! What a great novella!

Tchaikovsky is great! I haven't gotten to this one yet but can't wait!
What's your favorite of his so far?
@@TheLibraryofAllenxandria Children of Time! I never thought someone could make me care for a spiders fate lol.
If you liked this that much you gotta get on Project Hail Mary. Won't say much else for spoiler purposes
I have yet to read any Andy Weir!
@@TheLibraryofAllenxandria the Martian is worth the read but Project Hail Mary is a must. Especially since you like this so much
@@michaelpantalone171 LOVED Project Hail Mary. Just read it in August. Probably best book I’ve read in 2024 to date.
Fantastic review, Allen! I am definitely going to pick this up.
It's great, Anitha! And we're already Tchaikovsky fans!
This pleases me as an absolute fan of Children Of Time
Adrian Tchaikovsky is making modern classic of literature right in front of our eyes
Children of Time is his most recommended to me. He's such a talented author, I'm confused as to why he is not praised more widely!
@@TheLibraryofAllenxandria not many know about him apparently I myself found out about him because I am Science Fiction fan
Have this on pre order so hopefully can get to it before the end of the week.
I hope you got it and loved it!
@@TheLibraryofAllenxandria I did. It was amazing 👏.
Yes!!! Agree!
Wow this sounds really interesting Allen! I need to get into Tchaikovsky’s books, so maybe this will be a good place to start.

I think it's a great intro to his sci-fi!
Maybe this will be the first work I read from this author, sounds like it has lots of elements that I will enjoy
Yes! I bet you would like it a lot
Recently read, and absolutely loved, Children of Time. Am reading Children of Ruin now. Can’t wait to read this.
I'm so excited to read more of his sci-fi works soon!
I held out for a day because I didn’t want to add more to my TBR … but dang it. The thumbnail pulled me in …
It's so good, Sal!
Adrian Tchaikovsky tell me more Allen
He is good. 😛
@@TheLibraryofAllenxandria All I needed 😂
Definitely one I'm going to try out.
Totally worth it and can be read in a couple hours!
Ooooohhhh! This sounds really good! Added to my tbr. Sci-fi, fantasy, and the human condition. Perfect!
It's so good and very short!
Alright Allen but when can we get a one piece video on how much you love it
That's in the pipeline. Stay tuned lol
THIS BOOK HAS WURLEYGIGS!!!! Sign me up! :P Good review Allen!
I love whirley-gigs and all things mechanical.
okay okay I bought it on Kindle, I'm reading it now ☑️
YESSSSSSSS
YES! I also loved this novella. It felt like it reading an episode of Star Trek The Next Generation
Yes, I agree! I would totally read more in this universe tho!
Those descriptions of depression really resonate with me. Absolutely adding this to my tbr
Yeah, it resonated hardcore with me also. Definitely recommend.
Love the idea that the wizard is actually an anthropologist
It's such a clever idea!

Neil Patrick Harris at home.
Man, these recommendations are just too long for me Allen.
I need shorter books then this.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
If HoA is short for you, I literally don't even know what adjective would describe a novella.
